How do you determine the voice quality being an issue of the device and not the network?

Lots of experiencing testing phones in the same locations. I have a map for each carrier that shows where their signals are strong and where they are weak. I take the phones to those locations to see how they perform, in addition to just testing randomly wherever I happen to be.

When I say a phone has cruddy voice quality, it's when calls sound crummy in both strong and weak network areas.

I also make a bunch of calls. If every call stinks no matter where I take the phone, well, then it's pretty obvious.

Contrary to popular opinion, people do still use their phones to make calls. If they didn't, you wouldn't have carriers like MetroPCS offering unlimited voice. So voice qualilty on a handset is an very important factor to me, not to mention the radio. Reception is everything. Everything if you just your phone for texting and email. You still need good reception to get a good connection to data services.
