You dont think this has anything to do with Apples iMessage coming out soon do ya? This is AT&T's way to insure people dont skimp out on Texts

Huh? If they had slashed prices by 50% you'd have a point, but you don't encourage people to sign up by raising the price and limiting options.

And at any rate, why would at&t care about iPhone messaging? Anyone who uses that is using the at&t data network. With corresponding data charges. It's not like this would somehow magically take people off the at&t network.

there's already apps out there like Kik and LiveProfile that are inter-operating system chat applications that mimic BBM already. there are more than just those 2 apps too. my text messaging usage has dropped since i started using these.

perhaps this move IS a way to mitigate the losses from people moving away from standard text messaging, but i bet they'll have some sort of text package to use as a "save" for retention purposes. just a guess.
