If people are so worried about their privacy,

they should not be using apps and services that identify their location! Hell, they should not be using smart phones at all! But no, they want e-mail, and Facebook, and FourSquare, and Twitter, and restaurant/bar/club/store/movie theater/gas station locator and maps/driving directions/navigation all of which use location services and/or GPS in some way, shape or form.

Even dumb phones can be tracked. They know what tower your phone was pinging off of if you've made a call, received a call, sent a text, or received a text. They won't know your exact location, but they can get an approximate location. Law enforcement uses this tactic all the time to determine if a suspect was in the location of a crime at the time the crime took place.
