4G isn't true 4G but also is not overhyped

first of all, could you make it any harder to comment on this site? By the time I figured out where to comment, registered and confirmed my email I had no trail back to the original thread I even wanted to comment on. also, apparently not a single person has mentioned 4G in the forums

Anywho -- there are certainly many things being hyped and over-hyped by carriers and phone manufacturers alike but the idea that 4G might not be objectively better than 3G I find to be untrue in real-world experience. I may not have 4G coverage absolutely everywhere on my Sprint Overdrive, but to my sheer delight I find I do in most of the use cases I apply it to and when I do, it is fa...

It's just because they had to put something together quickly. Heh, Verizon iphone.

How stupid. Not you, the phone. I hate the iphone. I'm not a droid snob, in fact I gave the iphone a really big chance. It let me down on so many levels. It works better if jail broken to be honest.

Apple, to me, is a bass ackwards company with great marketing strategy. Of course, you might want to buy a couple shares of Apple stock soon ... like I said, great marketing strategy ... but the iphone on Verizon is going to dissapoint people who jump ship from AT&T on many more levels. If you thought the iphone couldn't multi-task on AT&T just wait until you try and go on the 3G network and get a call. Yeah. AT&T's network allows this. Verizon, no...

I tried the iPhone too believe it or not. I don't "hate it" but I think it's the most overrated, overhyped product out there. Steve Jobs is very shrewd and Apple has probably the best marketing stragegy in the industry.

You're right about the iPhone being disappointing to those who switch over from AT&T. Not only won't they be able to talk and surf at the same time but they'll also notice that Verizon's EVDO speeds are slower than AT&T's HSPA at it's worse. Especially in major cities like New York. My friend can barely get 1mbps with Verizon's EVDO in midtown at times with his Droid X.

But I just dont get Apple with this though. They said they didnt want to put out an LTE phone just yet because they supposedly weren't ready to make co...

It doesn't seem to make much sense that the two biggest selling points of the iphone were global roaming and simultaneous talk and surf. Not that those aren't great features, but any quad band phone with umts can say that.

I have to agree with you. First, according to almost every WiMax review on phonescoop, I must be the luckiest guy(along with several of my friends and colleagues with WiMax devices) in my 4G area because I very rarely get slow speeds on my devices(I have 3).
Then VZW and Apple dropping the ball on data is a real dumb move. How many sad faces are we going to see walking out of VZW stores when the reps say "No, we are sorry you cannot make calls and surf at the same time.."? C'mon VZW you trash ATT's network(with good reason) but then can't offer a phone with a similar option... "Just wait, Mr Customer, the new iphone will be 4G". Yeah in 6 months after Mr Customer signed a 2 year contract with someone else because you fumbled, VZW.

I really don't think AT&T's network is bad. I've been a customer for a LONG time. Part of the stigma comes from the iphone. Back when AT&T wasn't AT&T the network was ... meh. But, now, I don't drop calls and I get strong signal almost everywhere I go. Granted, I do research and will not buy CRAP phones with bad reception.

Hey, I don't really need my device to play HD content. But on my current VZW phone, a standard web page (like Amazon, or phonescoop) thakes to open about 25-40 seconds, at best! This is painfully s-l-o-w!!! I would take 4G mainly for that matter, so the entire browsing experiance should be faster!

I am now eligible for a new upgrade, but no way will I upgrade another phone on VZW's 3G speed. I'd rather switch to Sprint or T-mobile.

Well I would be happy with that speed, or anywhere near it on my Incredible. In my area if I'm lucky I pull in about 400-500kbps. If 3G lived up to it's potential then I wouldn't complain, but at least 4G will give me some improvement.

I can get 1.2Mbps fine on 3G.

It all depends on what VZW 3G area you are in. Remember VZW has 2 types of 3G, 1xRTT and EVDO-Rev A. If you are in the 1xRTT area you might see speeds up to 400k, maybe. If you are in the EVDO area you will probably see them up to 1-1.5mbps. Remember when VZW and ATT were having that map war about the largest 3G? Its because they are totally different network tyes and different 3G experiences. EDGE on GSM is called 2G, 2.5G, or 2.75G whatever you wanna call it, but it had the capability of reaching speeds of 200-400k. So, its all about the area you are in and the network that you are on when it comes to speed as well as coverage.
