LG has always been good with mid range phones, (just look at the Shine), but they were the last ones to jump into the smartphone market. That said, it's not even fair to compare them to HTC since HTC has its roots in WinMo smartphones (in fact, they used to call them PDA's).

Once LG finally decided to produce smartphones, they had nothing to differentiate themselves from the competition, and their products still looked cheap compared to HTC and Sammy. Sammy started blowing up the smartphone market with the affordability of their blackjack series (I just upgraded from my BJ2) - and let's not forget that the blackjack was largely copied from the Motorola Q (IMO).

I know that LG hasn't had any very good Android phones to date.

However they are trying to get in on all of the excitement and should be releasing a good mid-range device soon. It isn't spec'd very high and it does have it issues but overall its pretty good (way better than the Ally).

Hopefully they will continue to improve their lineup since I've had some excellent LG phones over the years.
