So let me get this straight...

Yes, I understand that if you hold any phone near the bottom, it will kill service. That's been proven and is all well and good. I stuck a case on mine, no more drop in service...blah blah blah.

I know this software update will give a more accurate display of signal strength, but how exactly is that effecting my service now? Is it when my phone has 5 bars, it really could have 3 or more instead? So people who have dropped calls are actually in a place of low service, but they don't know that because their phone reads 2 bars extra... right?

I mean, it kind of makes sense, but that'd only be if I dropped a call with 2 or 3 bars left. But that doesn't really seem to address the death grip issue any further than previously. Not that I am u...

You would be correct. It does not change the reception issue. It only alerts the users more accurately that they will be dropping their call when gripped in the wrong place.

Yeah it is. In 8 years in the biz, I don't think I have ever been this excited about a phone.

Its not that you like the Iphone, i like the iphone, but i don't make piss poor excuses for apple and the iphone when they f up. You response for everything is cancel if you don't like it. Well what about the people who canceled contracts with their old company to join the iphone craze. When Toyota had the breaks failing issue, they didn't tell people hey return your Toyota's or hey learn to break earlier, because the breaks are worse than what we lead you to believe.

It IS disappointing. I suppose this article lends itself to a troll feeding frenzy. All the usual suspects are here. The best thing you can do is not respond. It only encourages them. Let them be the guy who laughs loudest at his own jokes.

The article said that "all" cellphones can have signal problems if held a certain way, I used my Droid as an example to prove otherwise.

I tried doing what you did to my BB Curve, and yeah i do lose a bar or two. But I have to actually try and hold it in a awkward way to lose a signal. Pretty cool to hear that about your droid.

Actually the statement "all cell phones have reception issues when held a certain way" is 100% unequivocally true.

I don't think you will find any honest person in the cell phone arena or even journalist who will state otherwise.

Well guess what. Right this very moment I'm holding my Droid with 2 hands while replying to you, and I still have 4 bars.

Actually, I have seen similar behavior on cell phones from Sony Ericsson, Samsung and HTC.

It really depends on the phone, your location and the location of the towers you are using.

If I am standing next to a cell tower, I'm sure I would get five bars no matter how I hold my phone (grin).

I have had Nokia, Ericsson (i know, it was a long time ago), Samsung, LG, BB, Motorola, Palm, Nokia again, & Moto again, and I have NEVER experienced anything like this. Ever.

So I have a hard time believing that this type of reception issue accompanies EVERY phone.

I as well as hundreds of thousands of others have never experienced this issue with the iPhone 4, I guess it doesn't exist.

wait.... that doesn't sound right.

you said:

I happen to be an unequivocally honest person in the cell phone arena, and I am saying I disagree with you that this impacts every phone. Not if you're holding it naturally.

"when held a certain way"

My statement was more than qualified. But you are arguing another point entirely:

"Not if you're holding it naturally."

so I'll change gears and respond to that;

And the iPhone, at least for everyone I know, does not lose service unless they hold it un-naturally. In fact, all the video's I've seen demonstrating the issue shows people holding the phone un-naturally.

I threw that though in at the last minute. Who cares if your signal is impacted if you have to hold the phone in an unnatural position to achieve that?

I just took my Pantech Matrix, wrapped my hands around it in an unnatural position, dropped a bar. Held it normally, all's good.

I put my SIM in the i9+++ that I got off ebay, held normally laying flat and then in a position at height up to my "ear" and all's good but put my hands around it in a totally non-natural position and dropped two bars also in both positions.

My dads old school nokia with the external antenna (the first phone to have the snake game) is affected by hold the phone anywhere, so your statement is false.

And besides, his post had literally two significant errors. It should read "holding" instead of "hold", and it should say "My dad's old-school Nokia". Big deal.

The issue isn't whether you can death grip any phone. The issue is whether or not the iPhone 4 is any more susceptible to a death grip than other phones.

This appears to be the case since despite this being a possibility on all phones, I've never heard of it to the extent on the iPhone. Possibly, this is due to the sheer numbers sold, or due to the ergonomics of the design.

Since the biggest issue appears to be gripping the lower left side of the device, I'd have call the ergonomic design into question. Most people hold the phone near the bottom, so that should be designed to be the least sensitive spot.
