If they simply did nothing, I would support that.

but see there is the problem, they can't do "nothing". lets be honest here if the government did "nothing" slaverly would still be the law of the land, Child labor would be unregulated, only white men would have the right to vote, there would be no education standards, among many other things that i can't think of now.

like i said damned if they do damned if they don't, personal i like a government that trys to improve my standard of living.

Bit of an oversimplification on my part. What I should have said was when government does things to get out of way, things tend to improve. I would argue that many of the examples you gave are those types of examples.

i don't understand what you mean by "do things to get out the way"

do this, i did it myself one day. Research the History of the republican and democratitc parties. You'll find some intresting things. including this one intresting fact, more often then not, smaller government has failed. now i'm not saying i want government control in everything i do, what i am saying that there needs to be balance. that starts with the american people, we need to decide what we want first.

The Revolutionary War wasn't about Slavery!

The North (Abraham Lincoln) didn't start the Revolutionary war to end slavery, the war was whether or not the South could leave the Union and become its own country (hence the Confederate Flag). Slavery was ended as a consequence of the South being FORCED into staying part of the United States of America.

Don't get me wrong, I am against slavery but, if you are going to remember history you better remember the correct version.

Actually, the Revolutionary War was about enough citizens in the colonies getting tired of being taxed (or being angry that they were no longer able to bribe the port officials), thus they turned on the British Empire and fought until the French noticed and helped weaken their rival by supplying the colonists with arms and other assistance.

The Civil War could be boiled down to the question of property and state rights. The southern states favored slavery (property rights) because of their industries, with cotton being the big one.

However, the thread seems to be more about the modern government, in which case I have to say that we can't remove all government. As someone else has already mentioned, we need a nice balance of public an...

actually if you actually read up on the civil war (like you ment) you'd learn that the civil war was about many different things but most historians agree that with out the topic of slavery the war would of never happened. that was the one topic in political discourse of the time that would insight hate and violence, with out it many believe the rest of the issues could of been worked out. i love history dude please lets not go there.

i give you this the war was not only about slavery, but since i never said anything in my initial post about the war, my initial point still stands if the government would of not stepped in slavery would still be the law of the land. and further more Lincoln RAN on an anti slavery platform. which started th...

very interesting i'm going to have to pick that up, you should check out a book simply called "The Civil War" by Bruce Catton (1899-197😎 it was originally published in 1960 and is considered by many to be one of the most conclusive histories of the war. The author explains like i said Slavery was not the only cause of the war but it was the only Cause that with out the war my have never happened.
