I've already useed 5.7gigs with my Moto Droid, and I still have a week left in my billing cycle.

I wonder if all these people buying the new Iphone are aware that these new data plans from ATT essentially render smartphones useless.

at&t would not want you as a user anyway, too lazy to switch over to wifi. stick with vzw and its whack 1.6 connection and ill go grab my 7.2 with at&t.

You know damn well 7.2 isn't REAL world speeds! Try being realistic.

Tmo's HSPA+ is "theoretically" capable of 21mbps.

Theoretical/advertised speeds are not the same thing as REAL world/End user speeds.

Hey at least I'm on a network that I can actually use my smartphone w/o having to pay a whopping $25 for a measly 2gb's at a time. I don't like being ripped off.

And you seem to be IT&T CEOs little b**ch!!! Cause you agree with their *stingy* data policies!

I certainly hope consumers do their research before being tied into a contract with a smartphone they can't even use cause of *stingy* data plans.

if data was food you would be one fat son of b*tch! I think the new plans are teaching people to be responsible and making them aware of other sources such as wifi. And on that note if your primary source of internet is coming from a OTA cell phone carrier then you obviously never did your research either...3G tech and even HSPA+ is not suppose to replace your primary source for internet connection.

for someone like you who clearly needs unlimited, stay where you are. but dont judge because you use exorbitently more internet than the average smartphone user. seriously about 75% of the accounts i deal with that have data plans do benifit from the 15.00 plan. just cuz it's bad for you doesnt mean it's bad for everyone. i for one am keeping my unlimited data plan. and the nice thing about being grandfathered in is that if you have a smartphone of any kind and swith to one with a different os like bb to iphone, you still keep unlimited.

exactly. The more you use, the more you should pay. Why should you use 4gb and pay the same as the person using barely 1 gb. It just makes sense. Now, maybe they should also offer an unlimited for those data pigs, only at a higher rate. Maybe some people just need to get off their phone a little and go do something productive.

And maybe you should just admit you're an employee of one of these carriers and being paid off to spout your crap.

The only people who use really massive amounts of data are the technogeeks. Now, obviously I am a technogeek too otherwise I wouldn't be posting here, but technogeeks make up what, 1% maybe 2% of the customers of a mobile carrier?

There is only so much bandwidth and if one person uses too much, there isn't enough left for others to use. Why should wireless carrier screw over 98% of their customers for the sake of appeasing the remainging 2%? How is that a path to profitability?

The only fair way to apportion ANY resource is....the ones who use the most, PAY THE MOST.

If someone only uses 100MB of data a month, why should they be forced to pay for an 'unlimited' plan they don't need?

Then go after the 100mb a month users of data. Not the rest, and if they truly wanted to do a cap to go after these guys, then make it like 6 or 10 mb.

It does not render them useless. If you go over that limit then they add 1gb more for $10 and so on. If you are a super heavy user then you might want to check out other options but for the overwhelming majority of smartphone users, 2gb is enough. I tether quite a bit and stream music sometimes and still have never hit 5gb.

I am so tired of complaints about the new data plans, for the vast majority of customers, 2GB is more than sufficient, moreover the overage rates are entirely reasonable and predictable....$10 for additional blocks of 1 GB rather than the ridiculous per MB or God forbid, per KB overage rate you get a large chunk of additional data at a flat rate, so instead of having your next bill be $600 more expensive it will be $10 more....entirely reasonable

In addition, so called 'unlimited' plans are lies, as they are not truly unlimited, read your contract and you'll find out that even with an 'unlimited' plan you can be cut off for excessive usage.

In the business world 'unlimited' means not 'there is no cap' but rather 'the cap is set high en...

T Bone,
Just be honest that you're a paid shill for AT&T, and not truly for the consumer.

I commend your defensive measure in supporting your carrier. However, being a consumer not tied to any carrier for employment, I see a great different perspective on the data cap. While I won't argue with caps in general, The data consumption analysis from AT&T, seems to short change the consumer in a world of Bigger, Badder phones. No doubt AT&T has equated this into their prediction. On average, I was hitting 3.2 gigs every month on my Touch Pro 2. My Evo Screams in the downloads now making me able to get to my next task much faster. Thus allowing me to interact with my device much more frequently and pleasantly. I have only owned my Evo two weeks and have already surpassed 2.7 gigs on light use.

Imagine the gigs iphone users will rack ...

Actually, what has happened is that far from being angry about the change, people have been relieved to finally be able slash the cost of their data bills in half.....

One common complaint is that 'given that most smartphones these days support WiFi, and WiFi is practiclaly ubiquitous, why should we be forced into data plans we don't need, why can't we just use WiFi only?'

And now they finally DO have precisely that option...2 GB plus free WiFi at over 20,000 AT&T WiFi hotspots around the country (a number which is rapidly growing, not shrinking) will be sufficent for all but the most demanding users.

Those who need more than 2 GB can still have all the data they need, they just pay more for it than the people who don't use as much....

OK, then what person for $5.00 bux a month less, knowingly would want to cap their coverage to 2gb? I tell you, the industry plants shills to push their agenda on these websites to push their agenda.
