Google is doing everything I think the cellular industry needs. Instead of the service provider getting their hands messy in handsets, Google is selling their own handset and letting consumers decide. This is the future of wireless. No more upgrades or contracts. You buy your phone at full price and keep it until you can't use it anymore...just like everything else in the world.
...
Or until you find out it cant run the latest apps because Android 2.2 came out...
...

The N1 is a Google phone, meaning they are the ones making the drivers for it, and it is the DEVICE the software is being developed on.
But knowing this would actually require require reading up about android, so I forgive you for not knowing this.
Plus, the only app that requires 2.1 is Google Earth (eye candy) and it only requires it to be installed from the market. You can sideload it on a device running 2.01 and it runs perfectly.
...
I would also like to add on to that by saying the OP didn't mention Android AT ALL in his/her post. He/she said that consumers should have the option to buy the handset directly from the manufacturer and not from the wireless provider.
...
And when do they not have this option?
...
MennoMar 16, 2010, 4:13 PM
try buying an iphone unlocked.
...
They more or less go for about $1000.00 for the 3gs 32gb. Unless one finds themselves in Italy, Australia and a handful of other countries which they are sold that way, and even then, you're talking like $800.00. And if the carrier branded stores will sell it to you?
...
MennoMar 16, 2010, 4:36 PM
What I mean is that the concept of "buy a device, take it where you will" is foreign in the us still. Even if you buy a device without extending your contract (like I did) it's still branded and has whatever software the carrier wants for it unless you pay an insane amount for an unlocked one.
I really like the concept of google.com/phone because the device is unlocked, no matter what.
...
You gotta be a frinkin izombie to pay that much! ! !
...
Sprint requires a two year contract even if one purchases phone from manufacturer or Ebay etc...
...
Ok, what about the other Android handsets "With Google" that are stuck at 1.6?
Exactly.
You have to be a fool to think this is anything resembling a cohesive development model, and you'd have to be a fool to pay full price in this kind of ecosystem where to keep your phone up to date you basically void your warranty
(as you have done 🙂 )
...
Since you are so wrapped up in your little iPhone bubble you might not be aware that a lot of people import phones from overseas all the time paying these kinds of prices. There are many people that buy phones directly from the manufacturers as well. A cellphone is like any device out there. You buy it, it gets outdated, you buy a new one when you are over the current features. Besides, most people that spend money on phones are not buying it because of the software upgrade-ability or an app store, they are buying it for the present technology offered on it and how it applies to their personal/business life. Manufacturers keep their software updated all the time for at least the first year, maybe even two, of the device life-cycle. Nobody wi...

Also there is a lot to be said for unlocked, unbranded, unbloated and being able to use this on $10 medianet (with family texting) and no contract. Five hundred and some odd dollars is more or less ok for no subsidy smartphone.
And the above holds true for various phones, not only the n1 and google.

I did it earlier today. Now I'm wondering, just how true to free overnight shipping they provide?
...
Oonh, your more jump the gun than me!!! I want a review from you. I want to know if it has any of the same problems the Tmo N1 had.
That noise cancelation feature is really cool!
Oh, and feel free to order me one too!

LOL, I've been using Android for over a year, and recently played with an N1, they guys said he has had no problems. As usual, and in many cases things get blown out of proportion to the real problem.

Ohkay! ! ! Good to know. I like my N95, but it's March 2010, and it's time to move onto something that is more
2010ish! I'm just glad I can tether with Android! PDAnet! Dn you tether? My N95 gets hot I tether.

Whoah! That $240 savings on the data plan rips his argument to shreds. I suppose that is why he snipes an irrelevant comment here or there and then disappears. If you don't want tp pay full retail for this phone...we GET IT. We really do. Now shut up...please.
...
I just realized that if one factors in TWO years with the $10 data plan as opposed to the $30 one that is $480. The phone nearly pays for itself!
...
What makes you think I've never purchased a phone directly from the manufacturer? If you've even read my earlier posts you'd know I buy unlocked phones all the time.
But it's a stupid proposition for the average consumer. You don't save any money, you instead pay an extra $200.00 for having the privilege of ending your contract early.
Additionally, competing platforms have turned the contract lock-in into a revenue stream paying for platform development. That's why a 3 year old iPhone runs the latest OS- something unheard of not too long ago. Right now most brand-new Android handsets can't run the brand-new OS, so you mean to tell me it's a wise investment? 🙄

1) I can still warranty my phone, because it will be impossible for them to detect I rooted it.
2) You don't understand android, you don't understand anything but one business model.
Enjoy your iphone, I'll enjoy my droid. There being actual Competition for your precious device isn't reason for you to attack android so viciously.
Let's face it, if you really thought Android would fail, or that it's system wouldn't work, you wouldn't feel the urge to slam it every time news was posted.
...
1) Providing you can restore it. What if you can't? Point stands- your warranty in its current state is void. Period. I can un-jailbreak an iPhone too.
2) My job is to say "I told you so" with each and every promise Android fails to live up to. I think the OS is very clearly a fraud that has bilked people (incuding you) out of promised functionality by Google's inability to manage this platform's development.
The only people who think otherwise are people who don't know what they're talking about, as you're very clearly indicating.

If my phone is fried I can still try warrantying it. Multiple tech reps have posted that verizon is aware of rooting, but really doesn't care when it comes to warranties as long as you're not stupid and you don't fry your CPU or something noticeable.
That being said, it's very easy to recover (the first thing you do when rooting is make a recovery partition).
But even IF I destroyed my phone and couldn't get it replaced, I have protection on the device (something you can't do with an iphone) where I can get a brand new replacement for a fraction of the cost. ($40)
What promised functionality have I lost that I was promised? I see none. THe OS said it was being upgraded this year (q1) that date has not passed yet. Flash is st...

If I understand this correctly, I agree with you on everything except for your #1 response. In defense to Bluecoyote, I personally do not how to Root a device so I would speculate millions of other domestic potential buyers would not as well. So not being able to warranty the device is rather a tough sell. The industry is really trying hard to keep consumers locked at bay.

1. Rooting a device is basically using a glitch in the programming to give you admin level access to your device. It's as simple as replacing a couple lines of code.
2. Motorola didn't digitally sign the bootloader (think of this like a "safe mode" on windows) meaning that short of someone going into settings and trying a Super User (admin) command, there is no way they can detect that a device is rooted.
3. This is important because it makes it possible for you to remove those new lines of code, aka "un-root" your phone, and there will be NO evidence that your device was rooted.
Yes, if you fry your phone they will catch it, but say that for me, after 6 months I notice that my screen's backlight is going dim. All I need to do ...

I'm feeling really ancy/impatient right now. Are you sure you think I will be ok with a software keyboard?

MennoMar 16, 2010, 4:19 PM
I am getting faster and faster with mine. Faster than I was on my physical keyboard now (auto correct is amazing)
It's frustrating at first, but it gets a lot easier. I like having the physical keyboard to fall back on.. but if the Droid2 (or N2) doesn't have one.. I'll most likely be ok with that as well.

Oh right, good to know, thanks for the feedback. It really sucks having to press the same damn button 2/3/4 times on my numeric keypad.

Yes. it will have the newest update to 2.1. if for some reason it doesn't (highly unlikely) the OTA update will pop in as soon as the phone is plugged in.

i think it's great as well...not to mention one could probably get away with a 10.00 unlim data plan. as it is an unlocked phone not branded to att, the billing system probably wont recognize it as a smart phone. so no 30.00 data plan.

MennoMar 16, 2010, 1:19 PM
It will most likely be recognized. I'm not saying it will, but plan on paying the 30 and be happy if you only get the 10.

in our biller if it's a non att branded phone or unlocked it shows as unknown manufacturer. therefore allowed 10.00 data. unless google programmed this phone differently to register the imei in our system...it's unlikely our customers will pay the 30.00

Menno,
Thats a big maybe, they have yet to do it on my Rogers HTC Magic. But if it so happens, so be it. BTW I did order one today. Havn't seen you for a bit how goes it?

MennoMar 16, 2010, 4:15 PM
It goes. Still job hunting. Working as a part time consultant for a few stores. Holding an "android workshop" sometime this month.. should be fun.
Et tu?

Not bad, ordered the nexus 1 for att, hopefully get it before friday. We shall see? BTW you should come over to efnet #androidmobile, I think you would feel at home.
...
MennoMar 16, 2010, 4:42 PM
what's efnet?
...
Its an irc server. Download andchat on the market its free, add the efnet server irc.he.net then either add #androidmobile to the settings as far as channels, or /join #androidmobile from the terminal.
I did know there WAS some issues with irc and vzw, but I think it has been resolved.
BTW I know the freenode works, just join #android, if I see you there, I will get say hi.
You can also download any irc client to your computer, and log onto the efnet and join as the above.
...
BTW the above goes for all of you. All are welcomed.
...
MennoMar 16, 2010, 5:08 PM
what is the server address/port?
...
Ah heck, if these supposed upgrades that ATT is spending $18-$19bln on really do make a difference with the backhaul and so on then maybe having to pay more won't be so bad. Plus the N1 has a 1ghz processor and these various Android browsers (Dolphin) so hopefully webpages will load nice and swift like.
...
MennoMar 16, 2010, 4:16 PM
The 2.1 browser is really fast.
If speed is your main concern, opera mini is about as fast as they get, though you give up some functionality.

Oh yeah? What sort of functionality? What about the Dolphin browser? Do any Android browsers have the ability to make bookmark folders? Mobile Tech sites folder, News sites folder, porn sites folder? I prefer bookmarks to be in folders, that way I don't have to scroll all up and.

MennoMar 16, 2010, 4:44 PM
Opera Mini isn't multi touch atm, and it formats everything for mobile. Once Android gets the flash plugin that might not be in opera.
I am using the 2.1 browser right now.. to my knowledge there is no way to make shortcut folders, but it's not something I really do, so that could be why. Heck, I barely use bookmarks. I just start typing in something and google searches the most relevant sites and displays them

The option to get yours embossed is available. Did you get yours embossed? Do you know where they emboss it at? I think maybe I'll have mine say "Jay's Nexus One (and the date I orded it.)"
I wonder if it'll have multitouch right out of the box.

No, I don't want them embossed, not good for resale vaiue.

Oh...I understand. Well I'm kind of a sentimental person, so I think I might.
"Jay's Nexus One March 19, 2010"

You don't even have PS bookmarked?
So do you have any experience with the Dolphin browser?
So what do you think Menno? Think I should take the Android plunge and JUST DO IT???
...
MennoMar 16, 2010, 8:07 PM
I just start typing phonescoop and it pops up.
Dolphin is ok, I liked pinchzoom on xscope more (but 2,1 browser is better than both) Dolphin handles tabbed browsing the best though.
As for taking the plunge, if you got the money, I say go for it. I think you'll really enjoy the phone.
...
Ooh! You said go for it! Well I have $740 in savings. I'll probably have my mother go to my sisters acct (my sister is w/ATT, so it would just be simple that way, to do a transfer of service). And I'll $125 approximetly to terminate 1 "other insignificant person". And get the $70 unlimited voice + $15 medianet + $20 unlimited txt & mms.
I think I WILL get it embossed. I think I'll have it say "Jay's Nexus One: March 18 2010"
...
Jay,
Nice but medianet is $10 with unlimited texting. See I already saved you money.
...
Sorry man, I can't see AT&T (or Verizon, or Sprint, or whoever) not updating their systems to detect a Nexus One. It's quite different from activating an imported device with a foreign ESN.
...
GSM works far different then CDMA. GSM uses imei, since they don't sell this phone, they don't have the imei on file. AT&T except for a few cases, can't even detect unbranded models of the same ones they sell.
...
why would I love this phone when if I decide to cancel after purchae, Google and ATT would charge me a cxl $ fee. No F**k Google, Nexus, and Att

you cant get an etf from att if you didnt get a subsidy off the fone thru them.

Nope, wrong again! No subsidy from Google either. Therefore no etf fee. It's $529, no subsidy, no contract.

MennoMar 16, 2010, 4:38 PM
Let me break it down for you:
ETF fees, and "stopped using this" fees ONLY apply if you sign a contract to get the device.
This is like going to the store and buying a TV. You are not signing ANYTHING to get the phone for that price. You are simply picking it up.
Welcome to the wonderful world of unlocked, carrier free phones. There be dragons, but they mainly just want to say hello.
...
MennoMar 16, 2010, 1:41 PM
No you wouldn't.. Unlocked phones are bought AS IS, no strings attached.
...
It sold unsubsidized you have no etf or cancel fee at all with AT&T. You are paying full price of $529 plus sales tax and free shipping.

Bug off MY phone carriers! ! ! My $$$ my phone, not the carriers.

Just wait till Apple get's their injunction against HTC..

MennoMar 16, 2010, 4:14 PM
Won't Happen. Google and Microsoft are both mobilizing their lawyers.
All HTC needs to show is that it is the Software being sued, not the device, and they can work to push it out of court.
...
Their being "mobilized". That's funny it's kind of like a "War of the Tech Titans!!!"
