Why not save the time, energy and money and just forbid the possession of cell phones in prison? 😕

I hope your joking. What would make you think people in prison would have the luxury of using a cell phone. Of course they are already banned. Cell phones in prison are a big a problem as drugs.

Right now, as we speak, a con is drafting a response to this post on his web-enabled smartphone.

And no, I'm not kidding.

Right now as we speak a con is buggering some fresh meat in the showers without the courtesy of a reacharound.
North-American prisons are scaled down palaces financed by taxpayer dollars.

The perfect reason I shan't be visiting.

I agree, enforce the ban, add 5 years in prison for those caught with one in prison, 10 years in prison for a corrections officer who sneaks them in and sells it to them.

I don't know why people believe laws are a hundred percent deterrent. The death sentence doesn't deter ALL who might commit capital crimes. Some people are going to break the law no matter what. Making the penalty harsher won't make it any easier to catch these guys with phones. They will still get them. Making the phones not work will nip it.

I love it. We are pretending that those that have already broken the law and found themselves in prison are now going to follow the rules because we threaten them with prison? Didn't work the first time, why would it work over a phone? Honestly, someone has life without parole, and we tell them we'll add five years for having a phone? Come on now, think a little here.

You also have to consider the fact that you cannot just add years. It would require a trial. That means the time of our judges, prosecutors, and public defenders (none of which come cheaply) is going to be consumed with cell phone cases. The courts are already too busy, adding this won't help anything. In honesty, most cases would go uncharged. A DA doesn't get reelected by...

I myself am a Correctional Officer. So here's my point of view to help clear this up and maybe answer questions.

1. Cell phones are forbidden inside a correctional institution for both staff and inmates. No exception!

2. Yes, most contraband is brought to inmates by dirty staff, unfortunatly. Major consequences are dealt with those dirty staff. Staff usually end up with a criminal record or going to jail in the end.

3. Officers do have radios with alarms on them, so we don't need cell phones for emergencies.

4. If we needed to contact our families for whatever reason, we simply use a designated landline phone.

5. Cell phone jammers would be a good idea and depending on how powerful they are they may or may not affect those ...

I've done volunteer work in prisons, and I agree 100% with what you said. Bringing in contraband, even something as small as a carton of cigarettes or a cell phone, if you don't get caught, can net you thousands of dollars. But of course then you're stuck being an inmate's pawn in a con-game and that never turns out well. Bump up the penalty for smuggling in a cell phone, and the inmate will just increase the price until someone gets bought out.

I say as long as the jamming doesn't interfere with outside service, go for it.
