...is to announce that there will be a shortage.
And people fall for it year in and year out.
and then they wonder why companies don't make sure their item is bug free pre launch. what is better than paying beta testers?

Actually, I'm curious to see how the phone does. I don't like Palm's as a rule, but this one looks interesting. I wish you guys the best of luck with it, and that critics won't use the shortage to attack it's failings (as every new phone has them) like they did with the storm.
I'm just saying that a CEO announcing that there will be shortages isn't really news. It's like a news company putting "and Newsy Newslady with a special report... how safe are your kids online?" in their 30 second blurb to get you to watch the news, not news in it's own right.
But mark my words, when it launches people will be complaining about the wait, about the shortage.. just to fall for it again when storm2/iphone3 whatever comes out.

While I agree this is a marketing strategy, I disagree about the beta comment. The Pre has been in beta testing for several months, the numerous public sittings of the Pre is a pretty good indication. There were reports that some celebrities had a unit.
