With them merging w/ Verizon...why would they be deloying this on there handsets? Seems kind of pointless and also seems like a compnay that is not ready to be married to VZW. Lets hope this is not an early indication of them acting like Nextel was a sub-brand under Sprint...

I dont think they did this out of wanting to merge as much as having the need to merge. The merger will mostly benefit Verizon as from commercial they have already taken and rebranded my circle to my family and friends. Mission accomplished

And lets be honest, this is going to take a while to transition. You don't want folks to just be slammed into Verizon. You have to give customers a bit of time to get used to the new company. I wouldn't be surprised if a few things are given to Alltel before everything is simply Verizon.

It was and isn't a merger! It was an acquisition of Alltel by Verizon. It may just be semantics, but it's still true.

Perhaps someone will buy the divested markets as a whole and keep the Alltel name?

It's not uncommon that during the early stages of a merger that the acquired company continues to run their business and implement things they've had in the works. In this particular case, they're deploying an app that could save on customer service calls, so it would fit in with any headcount reductions that will come with the merger.

Either that or VZW is using this for a market test, if it works out, it could be adopted system wide. This way, if it doesn't the cost is reduced over all.

They do have a divested market that could remain Alltel for quite some time. It wouldn't surprise me if this only launches on the divested side.

Verizon already has something similar to this, without the instructional videos.
