Can someone explain to me the benefit of an unlocked phone when you still have to sign up for T-Mobile service on a contract?

You would do it for freedom of choice to get the exact phone you want if your carrier doesn't offer it. I have an unlocked phone because I wanted a Nokia phone with Wi-Fi and neither T-mobile nor AT&T carried one that fit my needs. I didn't like my contract phone so I sold it on ebay to offset the price of my unlocked one. My contract is coming up for renewal - I will be able to upgrade and guess what... I'll probably stick with what I have or buy a newer unlocked Nokia that fits my needs when I get tired of the one I have.
Another reason is that you could also get some of the compatible snazzy foreign models that aren't offered in the U.S.
