Wouldn't it have been more wise to take this feature set and put it into an EV-DO Rev. A phone with QChat support? Aren't we trying to get people OFF of the iDEN network?

I was think the same thing. iDen is dying so why even contiune to put out new iDen phones? I guess iDen has about 4 years left till its sut down but a new RIM was the last thing I would expect them to release.

Are you kidding me the iden network is working better than ever now. Iden is what the business customer use also government agencies, 911 etc. Works the best with indoor coverage. No network can come close when it comes to Ptt why do you think this phone has wifi the first iphone has wifi with poor data service on at&t's network this phone will fly off thte shelfs. It's more of a phone for business customers not consumers.

IDEN is the BEST network for commercial, industrial, and the MOST important PUBLIC SAFETY! There are Police & Fire Dept's in my area practically communicating 75% of the time on Nextel & Southern Linc IDEN phones. QChat is a WANNABE PTT just like AT&T and Verizons lame attempt at PTT. Nextel has been the absolutely best for almost twenty years and that is why every other carrier wants to copy their PTT.

Thanks

I def. agree with tbrown. IDEN is great, in the right hands. This is ideal for all those he said, except many comsumers have it and complain about it, because its not made for a consumer market per say. I work for a Sprint only dealer and I see many Nextel consumers unhappy with it because the model they have does not have a camera, isn't as "flashy" as other phones, or doesn't do features other phones do.

Many companies are trying to mimic the PTT, even Sprint with Readylink and now Qchat, but it will never measure to the Direct connect.

The IDEN network has sooooooo much potential, it's just consumers think they want it and it's not what they expected. But for the business world, IDEN is the way to go. More power to it!

Anybody that calls this decision stupid need to use the new blackberry curve and integrate the PPT on there. Yes the internet speed will be a bit slow because of the IDEN network but, our PPT is the best on the market and Verizon and At&T know that, which is the reason why they try to copy and falsify that theres are best. But we all know, this isn't the case. On a test I conducted with a friend of mine that work for Verizon, we found out that PPT takes about 2-3 seconds to go through, which is about a couple of seconds less than a text message would take to go through. Sprint's on the other hand, went through under a second. Fastest way for goverment officials, firefighters, police officers to communicate because, because it is so eff...

This is my 2nd Nextel Blackberry (corp). I've used PTT once in almost 5 years.
My main issue with iDEN is the lack of coverage (i.e. I can't use it in many places like Northern Michigan or most of Canada).

Since you guys would prefer to just bash on Sprint here's a couple of reasons to release another Blackberry on IDEN

1.) Updated features, camera, wi-fi, are the most common wants for current IDEN blackberry users.

2.) While operational Q-Chat or Direct Connect on Sprint or DCS, or whatever you call it, has no where near the coverage that Nextel Direct Connect has.

3.)The point is not to force users off of Iden, it's to slowly get them to move over. Forcing them would only drive more customers away.

4.)Q-chat is not a replacement for the Nextel Direct Connect, the purpose of Q-chat is to get data and messaging centric nuts off the Nextel network so it can be used for the people who really need it.

5.) Sprint obviously knows...

The 7100i is getting old and has problems. The best known problem is JAVA errors. I seen some 7100i that comes back almost every week for the JAVA error. Lots of customers want a Blackberry replacement for the 7100i. Lets hope there is not a lot of problems with the 8350i.

I've got to agree with Sprint Seed. I live in West Michigan. My company was the first company in Michigan to offer Nextel. Hundreds of business here rely on push to talk capabilities. It's quicker, makes the user more productive. In West Michigan it would cost Sprint a FORTUNE to upgrade towers to EVDO Rev A to accomdate all the current uses of IDEN. Refreshing the Nextel line of phones and focusing on loyal DC customers growing needs is what Sprint/Nextel needs to do. The i8350 will help rejuvinate this stale carrier. Keep going forward Sprint... and fix the damage quickly!

That truly could offer the most flexible choices for an individual's needs. Sprint Nextel is that Company. For the rugged everday construction work and emergency based professions with the option to access some internet usage and need that instant connection, Nextel rules. For the power users of voice calling and that need fast internet. Sprint rules. For those that like the whole package of Voice calling, fast internet and the occassional ease of just making that quick connect to verify an order or confirmation, Sprint with the added Qchat rules. No other company has this kind of flexibility. Nextel needs to keep the products coming and this device is the perfect addition to this side of their service.

Some customers prefer to have the regular nextel, believe or not some areas where Sprint doesn't work Nextel does. People have been asking for another IDEN blackberry guess what they have one coming don't complain.

This phone is actually a Q chat phone. Operates off of the Sprint Network but still has the ability to use the direct connect. This phone also does not use an iden sim card. So so much for sprint and all of its stupid decisions . I think this phone is going to be awesome and anyone who uses a nextel phone for work and still needs to have the functions of being in the office this is the way to go.

You have to consider that some people who need PTT services get a MUCH broader coverage area than QChat devices. QChat only works where Rev. A services are available vs. iDEN PTT which works wherever there is native iDEN coverage (which is MUCH greater than Rev. A coverage). Heck, Nextel's native network covers more ground than Sprint's (Sprint has the coverage advantage due to roaming, however). Also, iDEN PTT is a lot more reliable than QChat currently.

Until Sprint gets their Rev. A coverage to match iDEN and fix the bugs/issues with QChat, releasing a new BlackBerry iDEN device before a QChat one is a wise decision.

It is obvious. In order for them to sell it, buyers would look to see if it could still make money and last for some period down the line. Launching new products and solutions and spending money to maintain it will help serve that purpose even more.

*sigh*....

If you go to the discussion on that article you will see that there was no actual "Sprint" communication of a desire to sell iDEN. The creator of the network, who still owns a handful of stocks (sarcasm) wants to see the tech take off and be its own company again, and was fishing for someone to express interest in buying iDEN from Sprint. Sprint never commented either way.

Not only what you said, but also Sprint is trying to sell it's iden network. Personally, I think the government should buy the iden network and use it for all government phones including all levels of emergency services, local, state and federal agencies.

PEOPLE, DO SOME RESEARCH, PLEASE STOP FALLING VICTIM TO SENSATIONAL HEADLINES!!!! AT NO POINT HAS SPRINT SAID OR EXPRESSED INTEREST IN SELLING IDEN!!! THE CLOSEST THEY'VE COME IS DAN HESSE SAYING THAT HE'S NOT GOING TO TAKE ANY OF THE COMPANIES OPTIONS OFF THE TABLE BY OUTRULING A SPIN OFF OF SPRINT, WIMAX OR EVEN NEXTEL. THATS IT, NOTHING MORE HAS BEEN SAID FROM SPRINT ON THIS ISSUE, ASIDE FROM REPEATING THAT STATEMENT NOW AND THEN. 👿 👿 👿 👿 👿

And really, the Wall Street Journal? may as well have come from a gossip rag, "our sources inside", and "people familliar". C'mon, if this was something that had been legit there would have been actual sources to quote on even the most vague information. Instead it comes across as something you might read in the Globe. This just happened to be another steel toed kick at Sprint while they are/were down, nothing more than that.

I've thought the same, but in a different manor. It's pretty publc that the government's planning on forcing Sprint to off some its network for a public safety network, smart moves by sprint would be to up qchat fast, offer free phones to those who have to evacuate, no contract or 1 yr committments if any, and instead of selling Nextel to the government, offer to run it as a government service. That way they get all teh benefits of having the network and it's loyal nuts.
