That statement is not 100% correct.

"AT&T is the first GSM carrier in the U.S. to offer a service that protects some user data on mobile phones. The service, which is called AT&T Mobile Backup and costs $1.99 per month, will let subscribers backup and store their contact data on AT&T's web site. Contacts that are added to the phone or the web site are automatically updated at intervals set by the users."

T-Mobile already has a service available where users can back up phone contacts to their servers, and manage those via the website. I believe it launched a month or two ago. It is a free service, but is only available with maybe 3 or 4 devices. Also, I'm not sure of T-Mobile's service allowing contact sync with other services, or remot...

Nokia 3220, Nokia 6600, Samsung T629 second gen software, and the Nokia 5300 support this function thru the phonebook section of their respective phones.

Really? If they do offer that, they've never announced it, and it seems to be broken. I just logged into a T-Mobile account and selected Samsung T629 as my phone. When I went to "manage address book", all I got was a crude tool for sending phone numbers to the phone via SMS. I couldn't find any other options. That's hardly real contact backup. 😕

For it to work correctly, you have to sync your contacts from your phone initially. Also, not all T629's are compatible. When T-Mobile launched the service they started selling updated T629's (model T629NAB) that worked with the service. With that particular device, you would need the latest model.

That describes a way to send phone numbers to your phone. That's very different from backing up your phone book.

There are devices that backup a sim cards memory, I've come across them on ebay. You just put your sim card in, and press the backup button, and to get your memory back, you press restore. I've come across such a device on ebay.

Yes, new T-Mob phones, when you put a SIM that has contacts, the phones asks if you want to back them up. Only new 629s, and the WiFi phones, but more will come. And it's FREE!!! I think they want to have more phones capatable before they "push" it, but they have had it for a few months now. If you still doubt it, take a T-Mob SIM and put it in the new WiFi phones, Nokia 6086 and Samsung t409. Really. I swear. Trust me...

Its called Network Address Book. To access it you first have to sync the handset with the service from the handset and currently there are only a few devices that support it. The reason it's not showing in your My.T-Mobile is because you didn't first sync from a compatible handset. Once you do, it acts like you would expect a contact backup service to work.

at least that's my experience with it...

Sprints works fine. You can switch phones restore your contacts from the remote site from the phone and its there on your new phone. I have used it a few times. Costs like 2.99 though. But they have had it for at least a year I beleive!

Its actually software on the phone its self. In the phonebook menu there is an option to "synchronize all" this sends all your contacts to tmobile server and activates the contact manager on mytmobile.com. The only phone the software is on is the nokia xpress. There are three other phones that can do this with a software upgrade and thats the nokia 3200, nokia 6600, and the sam t629. 😎

Why don't they just use SymcML? 😕

Why haven't they announced this feature or made any mention of it in promotional materials? 😕

They've been focusing too much on myFaves, Hotspot@home, and now FlexPay. They haven't really marketed a phone since the Dwade Sidekick 3. They have a lot of great products on the market right now but unfortunately not enough ad dollars to go around to promote them. 🙂

They rather spend the cash promoting something much larger than a feature on a phone or two.

Like stated, TMo began offering this service in 3 phones way befor at&t. it is not something done from website, but from the phone. The "NAB" software in phones will save a copy of contacts on a website so if phone is lost or exchanged the customer can get the contacts back in there new device. 3220,6600 nokias an the samsung 629, an now t409 offer this service with most of tmo new phones to also come with it, like the blast. An no un like at&t TMo does not charge for this service, unless of course like the article says you have a sidekick plan.

Sprint has also been doing this for a couple of years...wireless backup service and voice command..I believe sprint is the only carrier with the voice command service, which allows the user to backup, edit, store, etc. all contacts via web and then dial with them with voice over the phone at $5 a month you never ever lose your contacts because they are not stored in the phone..I didnt know that AT&whatever they are now thought this was a break threw technology...
