NASA Taps Nokia to Build 4G Network on the Moon

We’ve not sent a manned lunar mission in almost 50 years, but NASA wants to build a 4G network there?

Come on, man!

NASA is doing a lot on the moon right now. As the article states, it will be useful in the short term for communicating with robotic lunar rovers.

But NASA also has the Artemis program to return humans to the moon by 2024. It's one of their major initiatives right now. This will require a lot of automated missions to the lunar surface to test various systems in advance of the crewed missions. This network will support all of those missions.

NASA needs good communication solutions for everything they're doing on the moon. It's better that NASA is using off-the-shelf technologies like LTE instead of creating some custom solution that would cost millions more.

Every president since Reagan has promised another manned lunar mission. I’ll believe it when I see it.

If NASA needs the network to test systems in advance of crewed missions, what crews are building the network.
