Just another way to get people to buy a brand new iPhone rather than consider a used one. Ugh.

I was just about to say the same thing. This is one reason I only do my second hand transactions at a carrier store, so I can go through the process of checking the IMEI/ESN - ensuring the device is unlocked and able to be activated - does not have an EIP or other payment that has not been made, additionally, I have the service rep remove and delete anything on the previous account owners device (mine included if Im selling it), and then sets it up to my own (or to the new owner if I sold it). I've been stuck with 2 devices that needed clearing from the carrier before they could be activated. Luckily the owner was cool (same one twice) and got things settled in store with me. So what exactly do you mean by "clearing from the carrier"?

Meaning the devices were still attached to the previous owners account - and while that person may have a new device, some carriers keep their former devices/old devices/previously last used device on the account for easy swapping back and forth. Sprint is well known for doing this. So you need to completely remove the device from the account, not just by swapping to another device, but by letting Sprint know that you request it be cleared and removed from the account completely. Then they can attach it to another account. Most people don't realize this, so it can be a bit of a problem or hassle.
I should say that once I knew this is how it worked out, that's why I always went to a store, because sometimes over the phone they don't understa...
