Zenfone 3 Ultra( I think this is the 6.8 model according to the press release ). Looks like a winner. I hope there are some good cases and accessories for this.

Do these phones support microSD cards?

According to the specifications, the physical space for SIM2 and microSD is shared so only one physical card can occupy that slot at any one time.

What annoys me even more is it appears that in order to enjoy the use of Band 12, one must purchase either the Deluxe or Ultra. Zenfone 3 basic model does not appear to support band 12. I hope either I am wrong or Asus changes their mind and supports it for their base model.

As band 12 is deployed more in the Northeast USA region, recent trips often have my spouse lament about the lack of cellular data coverage on the interstate using her Zenfone 2 even though I see either 4 or 5 bars of LTE on my Lumia 640 that cost half the Zenfone.

By band 12 do you mean T-Mobile?
That is their primary LTE band.

According to the band chart on this site, the carriers that utilize band 12 use the following as well as other bands for LTE:

AT&T: 4/12/29/30
T-Mo: 2/4/12
...
