Would Open Source Solve this Problem?

Couldn't Blackberry or any other entity compile their own applications from Open Source? Why force anyone to adapt their software for all conceivable devices, even ones with insignificant market share?

Exactly. He's smart enough to know its not practical to develop every app for every platform. If somehow this idea became regulation it would eliminate every small independent developer overnight and would grind the big guys to a halt as well. It's simply not feasible to say every app has to be ported to iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Tinzen, Firefox OS, Ubuntu, MeeGo, etc. Plus what about the forked versions of Android (such as Amazon's Fire OS) and how about older versions of each OS? The same line of thought used to rationalize this policy could be used to justify including all of those as well.

And isn't Microsofts solution to this problem to allow Android apps to funtion on Windows 10 phones (you still download through the Windows app store, but developers dont need to make a Windows version.

Plus with BB10, you can sideload Android apps (legally. The app to use is in the Google Play Store on PC). I have seen a Q10 running Netflix.
