Yes. You are correct. When money is in a pinch though, I guess one has to sacrifice.
MVNO's are a great alternative as well.

While their native coverage may not be as big as the Duopoly, with roaming on verizon and other partners it's just as comparable. Also how many times a year are you actually going to travel to these rural areas they may or may not have coverage at? As long as phone service works where you live and work that's just fine. I could careless if my service works in a place I never go to or have intentions of going to.

Actually, Sprint's footprint nationwide is larger than either company if roaming is factored, and it has been since about 2003. Granted, 4G coverage is less than either.

GSM, on the other hand, is not good if your in the mountains or in the middle of Podunk.
