Global carriers have been around. It's just that we don't see them here. However, there are several companies that operate in more than one country, including Vodafone, Orange, Digicel, and Cable & Wireless. Actually, add Softbank to that list, since they own Sprint.

Good point, and I knew that from the point of Vodafone/Verizon and Softbank / Sprint. The article didn't say if at&t would operate in Mexico as at&t, but it sounded like it. I was thinking of a global carrier that has the same branding and phones wherever you go. Do you think that will eventually happen?

You may see a global carrier under the same branding however I doubt they would have the exact same phones worldwide. I'm sure there would be a lot of the same ones but in different countries/cultures have different tastes in stuff than we do. So there would be certain phones that would sell real well in some areas and not at all somewhere else. An example of this is McDonald's, you will notice that in different countries where they are used to eating different things they will have other menu items to appeal to their market.

Score another one for Lenovo. The Chinese company already owns IBMs old laptop business, which it sells under it's own name. Then it buys AT&T server lines, which gives it a good foundation of North America and then buys Motorola. Moto now buys lucasell, the major Mexican cell company gives Lenovo a key foothold in Central America. Is Canada next? This is not going to cause more variety or competition in the market. It's the beginning of a choke hold being placed around the future throat of the cellular world.
