WiFi

One great things about having WiFi on these devices is when the GSM coverage is poor (most peoples homes on the West Coast have poor coverage) in poeples homes, then they can have less of a barrier to adopting a GMS phone if it's going to work with their home WiFi network. The same goes for coverage in office buildings. This will reduce the barriers to adoption for new subscribers.
Hell, this'll fix ANY problem with interior coverage in offices or homes.

What happens when there isn't a WiFi network around? Then you are screwed right?
Unless your carrier puts up towers in your area or improves signal strength somehow, yes...I'd say you were screwed.

The only technology that can provide coverage absolutely anywhere on the planet is Iridium's satellite-based phone service. But that's prohibitively expensive for most people.
With a UMA phone, you have coverage in all the same places as your current mobile service, PLUS special areas you set up for yourself using UMA-enabled Wi-Fi or Bluetooth access points in your home and/or office.

Actually, satellite-based coverage is not all inclusive, either. Reception will vary depending upon terrain and weather.

Would the WiFi on this phone be for internet services only, or would you be able to talk like VoIP?...
From everything I've read, this would include voice as well as data.

Correct. UMA is designed to support both voice and data seamlessly across both network types.
Simultaneously also?
What UMA does is tunnel the entire digital mobile connection (GSM/GPRS or CDMA) over an IP connection.
So when a UMA phone enters a UMA-enabled Wi-Fi zone, it will automatically switch to the Wi-Fi connection, just like any other kind of handoff or roaming. The Wi-Fi connection is always preferred, because it is faster and cheaper, and takes load off the mobile network.
