How can you let this happen?

I mean I guess it is better than have bad EDGE but as long as EDGE has been around for them to not have it working well on their chipset is ridiculous.

I wonder though, could this have something to do with not wanting to have a US and European version of the handset since European handest don't have EDGE???

Since EDGE was only intended to be an interim step on the path to a fully 3G network, perhaps MOTO decided to put more money into UMTS/HSDPA chipsets. If the rumors are to be believed, Cingular should have a major launch(re-launch) of UMTS soon and that makes the need for new EDGE phones less important, at least for Cingular customers (T-Mobile USA is another story however)

I hope moto is putting money into UMTS in the US but to me this makes moto look bad that they couldn't get EDGE working into their high-end phones. To me only a high-end phone would have EDGE. It's not really needed for the average user.

I myself can't wait for UMTS on Cingular in NYC. It's the one thing that will make me switch from TMobile. Problem with UMTS here is that with the freqs being different from Europe there will have to be brand new phones. So initially the phone features may lag until the manufacturers realize that UMTS will be used in the US.

I thought Cingular was going to skip UMTS and go right to HSDPA?

You have to have UMTS before you can have HSDPA...at least that's the way it's been explained to me...it's an add-on to UMTS...like EDGE is to GPRS.

GPRS = 2G
EDGE = 2.5G
UMTS = 3G
HSDPA = 3.5G

im sure that the Big Orange would like to roll out with HSDPA right away instead of UMTS at this point. they just might, but not for consumer use. think about it, how many HSDPA devices have u seen pop up anywhere in the world? Seriously, im not trying to kiss their a$$ but u know Cingular's got the technology tested. there just aren't any phone manufacturers ready to make the equipment

...And if Cingular did get a manufacturer to start making the phone technology just for them. You know that nobody would be able to afford the cost of the phones.

Doubtful. The 850MHz band pretty much forces an American and a European version anyway.

Except Moto releases a lot of their phones as quad band like the razr and moto q.

I would rather them sell a working product than a dysfunctional one.

Wouldn't it have been nice to have Windows 95 actually work without a million and one patches and new versions?

But, being impatient Americans means having glitchy but cool electronics.

Just another example of the ineptitude at Motorola...I really don't know how they've managed to increase market share.

🙄
yet another reason I won't buy another Motorola phone. I mean COME ON! I've heard EDGE being talked about since 2003, so having an unstable EDGE chipset is baloney. Motorola is unstable. That's my opinion.

After working for a cell phone company the last 2 years, and having one phone by Motorola which had problems (and me having to get it replaced about 3 times), I've seen and heard of issue after issue after issue. 1% of the time Nokias will have a problem, about 10% of the time Samsungs will have a problem.

So... why say all this great stuff about a new phone coming out and then come back and be like "Whoops"? Before you say something about it it should be tested and unless it works right don't say jack about it or y...

Why am I not suprised, Motorola should really consider closing their cell phone division and get into the waste extraction sector ; after all ...GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT!!!
