... there are areas where digital service just does not work, no matter how many signal boosters or repeaters or directional antennas you use. Nothing beats a three-watt transportable (in a remote location), and providers are now refusing to activate analog phones at all (even for B2B customers). The providers have already discouraged analog use by lowering the priority of analog voice traffic, and reducing the number of channels available for this type of call.

I had a situation earlier this week in which an analog phone being used 20 miles NE of Guymon Oklahoma failed. I called the wireless provider to change the ESN on the account to a working bag phone and he refused - even though I already have 6 bag phones activated on the account,...

That is a scary situation when a provider won't activate an analog for an existing customer. Out here in Rural MN analog is key. And in Northern MN, forget digital. It simply is not economical for providers to improve and maintain digital coverage in these areas.

More government subsidies must be provided so that providers can expand and provide rural areas like these, not just in MN, with the coverage needed to ensure their customer's safety. At times when budgets are tight, this will be difficult.

I see the impending loss of analog coverage to have minor impact on 90% of cellular subscribers. But leaving dead zones in areas where a cell phone is supposed to bring comfort is scary. With the ammount of subscribers in the country, cover...

I think anyone would tell you "I can't live without my cell phone!". But the truth of the matter is: It would be a minor inconvenience offset by the fact that you'd forget about them after a while. I didn't own a cell phone until I was 31...I could easily go back to using landlines.

Maybe i am wrong about this, but shouldn't an analog phone be able to dial 911 if it is not activated? I was under then impression that any cell phone that has a signal, subscriber or not, is able to dial 911. If this is the case, wouldn't people in those rural areas here in mn be able to upgrade phones to digital and keep the 3watter in their car or tractor or whatever? This should work unless the provider closes all Analog channels, but the channels can't be closed because of the 5% of people who are allowed to use an analog phone that they had from the start. thats just my 2 cents.

When service doesn't work it only makes them, the provider, look bad.

Cell phones are a luxury. Providers can't possibly cover the entire country.

He claimed E-911 compliance and that he did not want to lose his job. I feel for him and did not push the issue, but now I need a solution in this remote area for cellular communications, and the wireless provider has no solution available.

I work as an agent for Verizon Wireless. If I try and pop in an ESN for swap that is non-E911, it will popup an error message and tell me that the phone is not E911 compliant, then clear out the ESN field. I cannot physically activate it. The techs or w...
