The rumor was based on the fact the RIM was considering it and that they were doing market research to gauge whether or not there was interest in running BBM on other platforms.

I was part of that market research and responded very positively to the suggestion, as I think most people did.

For me this makes BBM useful and relevant. I wouldn't use it otherwise.
