Why write this now?

This has always been true. I wonder why junior high school match teachers didn't make word problems to help kids reason on phone costs. That is why if some people always get the upgrade and just sell it because otherwise they lose out.

Yes, it's nothing new.

But now that T-Mobile seems to be keeping Value plans around (it seemed iffy before) and making them a bigger part of the company's strategy, it seemed relevant. People have a real alternative now.

Also, I kept running into people - regular folks outside the industry - who didn't fully understand how it worked. I don't blame them; carriers spend billions every year to convince you that their post-paid plans are the best value. Carriers also do their best to hide the subsidy. Plus the psychology of "contract anxiety" plays right into their hands. People hesitate to make new two-year commitments.

So after the 100th friend asked me "should I get a new phone or wait?", I decided this article needed to be written.
