Why do these high-end "luxury phones" like this one and the Mobiado line, always have obscenely CRAPPY specs?? Sheesh.

By "Luxury", they obviously mean "style", which I have never cared about. I want a phone with performance, I don't care about how "pretty" it is...

Oh, I dunno...I think a phone that's pleasing to the eye is something to be desired. If everyone went by your philosophy, we'd all be carrying around an old Ericsson brick.

I'm not exactly talking about "brick phones". I'm talking about great phones like the Nokia 6230, or the Motorola v400. You know...phones with great features and performance, but not as stylish like this Nokia or something like the Motorola RAZR...

I get your drift. I just meant to say that I think how a handset looks or feels in your had matters. Style matters. To me, anyway.

What's crappy about the specs? 😕

A 208 x 208 pixel, 262,000-color display is way better than most Nokia Series 40 phones. The only other Nokia non-smartphone with that good a display is the just-announced 6230i.

Bluetooth, EDGE, 64 MB of memory, FM radio... I'd say it's pretty darn good, actually. What more were you expecting?

Well, granted those specs are better than the average Nokia 40... it just seems really silly to apply the term 'luxury' to it. A 'luxury' car comes with performance and features - frankly, I'd have liked to see a 'luxury' phone with the best specs - QVGA screen, memory card slot, at least a 1MP camera, and so forth, ya know?

I'm just being picky. And the previous poster has it right - by luxury, they really mean style.

Seriously, I can’t be the only one not impressed by this.Luxury, yea right. This phone is nothing but a Lexus with a yugo Engine. You can only dress up a piece of crap so much but at the end of the day it is still crap... Sure it looks cool but so did the 8890. NOKIA PLEASE do something to impress us. We should all be critical, this is not enough.

Motorola come on dude no insults.I use a 6230. I am not a hater.I had the 6620 and agree with you.If Great in function ,but in form? Come on if you like goose eggs. I am just getting sick of these vanity phones that look cool but cant deliver. there is a huge market out there for a phone with both amazing style and functionality but who has delivered? why cant they just pack the 6620 in a 6230 housing, put a some crome and shine on it, oh yea and and external sd and now we are talkin.Take care.

well I agree to an extent, the 6620 is a large phone, but since I can watch tv on it I will deal with it, I also love the large screen for themes and playing games

Also what is the deal with that big metal panel below the keypad? Does it flip out or slide or anything? Otherwise it just looks like a lot of wasted space...

That's where the keypad slides back into. Its not that the screen slides up alone, but the screen and keypad are one piece sliding out of the stainless steel enclosure.

The metal area is NOT where the keypad slides back into. You can view the pictures at the link below: http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,8764,33325,00.ht ml?appId=8800

The full release states the following:

the keypad of the Nokia 8800 gracefully glides from its protective casing, revealing a hidden camera on the back.

OK, so it looks like the keyboard and the display slide up together... Interesting design. I assumed the display just slid up but the keyboard was stationary.

Another thing - it looks like the microphone is on the bottom of the phone. I know some other Nokias are like that, but I prefer having the mic on the side of the phone that actually points towards your face... Like on Samsung and Motorola flips.

mmcnier is right, both slide together. i held this phone in my hand 2 days ago. it is Nokias answer to the RAZR - a nice featured phone (not amazing featured) in a stylish form to make it a "status" phone. you can have the battery cover engraved. the thing is heavy as a mofo, but thin, just a tad thicker than the RAZR.

I'll agree with that...another gaffe on Nokia's part in regards to its features straggling behind other manufacturers. But I'll be damned if the whole stainless steel ball bearing thing doesn't intrigue the hell out of me.

Luxury is style, but it is also construction and material ("watchmaking and jewelry techniques," stainless steel, metal injection molding on the function keys, bi-stable spring mechanism and stainless steel ball bearings on the glide open mechanism, reinforced glass used in luxury timepieces that provides added toughness and scratch-resistance to the high resolution 208 x 208 256K color front display. Add EDGE multi-slot class 8, Bluetooth supporting stereo and an elegant wireless stereo headset option, and you have a cool, luxury device ... and with a $900+ price tag (€750) not everyone on the block is gonna have one.

Word is that RF is exceptional and audio properties very good.

i'm just worried lint and crap is gonna get all in that stainless steel pencil container they're using to house the keypad.
i guess they just got tired to having to replace the small keypad cover on the 89-- nokias... they just made it solid...
luxury? luxury looks... for sure...
it's not crap... just not like OMG it has 64 MB! it's a 262k screen!
like one poster, if it had like 3mp camera and laser light show or something=) then i'd be like OMG!! hehe
