This is what I love so much about competitive industries! Little guys like Metro-PCS dropping VoLTE before any of the "Big Five". Hell even US Cellular beat everyone else to full Quad Band!

Just goes to show you how nice (albeit sometimes unfair) capitalism can be 🙂

MetroPCS is actually the fifth largest cell phone carrier in the US, by subscribers.

Well, that's not anything to brag about. No one wants more bands. Fewer bands are better. More efficient, easier to build and manage the network, easier to build phones for....

I was under the impression that having an additional seperate band for data would be much more efficient as it is not "sharing" a single dedicated band for EVDO / LTE.

Or am I mistaken?

Not necessarily. It's all about bandwidth.

Many bands are large, and divided into many smaller blocks.

Let's say Company A has 5 MHz in each of three different bands, for 15 MHz total. Meanwhile, Company B has 20 MHz in one band.

Company B is in a much, much better position.
