Oh, and I tried it today. It does, indeed, sound really great! 🙂 (Eric tried it out at the EVO 4G launch event, but this was my first time using it.)

You can finally hear a pin drop on your Sprint phone. 😉

Hey Rich, hope you've been well. So isn't this just really a voice codec change/channel allotment difference? Maybe the equivalent of GSM's EFR codec?

That's the main component. It's more than that, though, as the version Sprint is implementing requires CDMA 1x Advanced.

As I tried to explain in the article, Sprint is also bundling/requiring active background noise suppression in the phone in the complete package of stuff that Sprint will be branding "HD Voice".

But really, the difference is dramatic. It doesn't sound a little better. It sounds a lot better.

So you tried it between two Sprint phones that could support it? As the article says? Or was it just a call made from a Sprint HD phone to some other non HD phone?

Yes, it was an active call between two HTC EVO 4G LTE phones, using a small 1x Advanced cell set up at the Qualcomm booth.

Are they already converted to 1x Advanced? This will be a decision maker for me come October.....Will 1x Advanced allow simultaneous data/talk as well?

No, 1x Advanced doesn't allow simultaneous data/talk. However, SVDO does and from the FCC docs it appears the the Evo LTE is SVDO enabled just like the LG Viper which indeed does simultaneous data/talk.

Might you know what Vzn's timeline is for VoLTE?
And if there is any chance the GSIII might support
