Do we know if Sprint has the phone's LTE radio active, or does it have to get turned on later with a software / hardware update -- similar to what Verizon did with the Xoom?

All Sprint LTE phones are going to be released with LTE turned off to save battery life. There is a manual control in the system settings for the phone to enable the LTE radio. Later, once network vision completes, I believe the option will still be there, but active phones will ship with the LTE radio turned on.

The markets that are listed as launch markets have already in fact been turning the service on/off in test modes, so that shortly after, or as the Viper, and then the Galaxy Nexus get sold in our stores, the Network will be flipped on for service.

Thx.

In the early WiMax days, I remember being able to get signal (and usage) in markets that had not officially been "live".

And with me living in one of the first LTE markets, I'd like to think I could access LTE even before they officially go live again.

No problem, and more than likely you will. 4G has never been oficially announced for Sprint in the city where I work, but there are 2 towers tat broadcast WiMax. IF you move to an LTE phone, I would just check periodically.
