for the LG Optimus Elite / Optimus M+ / Optimus Plus / Optimus Quest:
Optimus Prime?
No, not quite--at 800 MHz the processor in the Elite isn't going to win any speed contests. But it does what I need it to do. PROS: --Perfect size for your pocket. --At 800 MHz, the processor actually does a good job of keeping things moving along. Video plays smoothly. --Reception is fine. --Sound quality is good, just not loud enough. --Screen quality is surprisingly good. CONS: --I wanted a small screen so it could fit in my pocket, but it's still a small ...

for the BlackBerry Storm 9530:
PROS: --Uh, you can make calls on it. CONS: --Insane auto dimming feature that leaves your screen constantly flickering. --Sure press technology is absolute junk. --I don't care what people say about Suretype. It sucks. --Little glitches in the software that drive you bonkers. --Tiny number/letter keys in landscape mode; it's impossible to type on. --Deleting an app? Be prepared for it to leave an icon behind you can't get rid of. --Archaic, and I mean Jurassic menu system that takes ...

for the Motorola Quantico V840 / W845:
PROS: --Pulls down a great signal. --Rugged indeed. --Good looking. --Two great screens. Outside screen is large. --Sound quality is great with great volume levels. --No external antenna protrusion. CONS: --A tad bulky. --For whatever reason, the back cover is friggin IMPOSSIBLE to firmly attach. It's not a mil-spec phone if you can't close it, Moto! I used this phone on MetroPCS's network in South Florida.

for the Samsung SPH-A500:
Greatest Samsung Ever?
PROS: Everything! Strong flip mechanism--Great screen for its time--Very tough construction--Excellent keypad--Good reception--Great talk time with extended use battery Samsung threw in for free! CONS: None. I mean it. I think it's the best phone Samsung ever built. I used this phone waaay back--around 2002-03 on Sprint's network in South Florida.

for the Samsung Knack U310:
PROS: Nice large interior screen. Nice large buttons on keypad make it easy to scroll through menus, etc... CONS: Antenna located at BOTTOM of phone where you hold it. DUH! Processor is slow to, well, process your commands you type into keypad. Just a slow, slow menu system. Okay, what's with the exterior screen? Isn't it supposed to be easier to read for, uh, older folks like me? Shouldn't it be color? Isn't color easier to read? Side buttons ...

for the LG VX-5500:
LG VX-5500
PROS: --Very compact and fits easily in your pocket. --Clear voice quality; loud & easily understood. --Bright, colorful screen. Easy to read. --Intuitive menu, a snap to navigate. --Loud, clear ringers. Decent vibrate function. --Surprisingly sturdy construction. I've dropped my handset a few times with only minimal scratches and superficial damage. CONS: --Not exactly a smartphone. You won't be surfing the Internet with this basic, no frills phone. I've used this phone for a year and a half on Verizon's network ...

for the Motorola W755:
Good little flip
PROS: Nice, solid construction. GREAT tactile feedback on the keypad. Nice interior screen with decent GUI. CONS: Poor earpiece sound; it's tinny and hollow sounding. Poor volume on the ringers. Weak vibration mode. SIGNAL/SOUND: Good signal. Crappy sound all around. OVERALL: A decent effort on Moto's part; just work on that sound. I'm on the Verizon network in South Florida.

for the LG enV3 VX-9200:
PROS: Great construction. Great sound quality. Great keyboards. Great battery life. CONS: Only that the exterior screen is small. SIGNAL/SOUND: Great signal. Great sound. Pretty simple,eh? for the Samsung Trance SCH-U490:
Puts you in Trance...the bad kind
PROS: Decent sound. Cool looking handset with gee-whiz sliding design. CONS: Miserable touch screen design; it essentially is TOO sensitive. Cheap feeling; the sliding mechanism doesn't feel solid at all, neither does the bottom half of the phone. SIGNAL/SOUND: Poor signal in my area, but that's just my area. Sound is decent. OVERALL: A cheap handset designed for the 12-year-old girls out there. Don't bother; it's bottom of the barrel.

for the Samsung Spex R210A:
Spex is a go!
PROS: --Nice ringers. Including the standard ringer that increases in volume after each ring. --The screen is bright and clear. --Typical easy to use Samsung menu system. --Great small size. --Loud and clear voice and reception. --Great tactile feel to the buttons. CONS: --A little TOO small. --Maybe not enough features for the hardcore user. I used my brother's R210a on the MetroPCS network in South Florida (which has improved to the point where it's now a viable alternative to ANY carrier).

for the Samsung SCH-A650:
Reliable to a fault
Pros: --Small, manageable size. --Tough flip mechanism. --Loud, clear ringers. --Easy to learn GUI. --Loud and clear volume, crisp audio quality. --Good dependable reception. --Built tough: this thing hasn't quit on me in 3 yrs. Cons: --No exterior caller ID. --STN screen isn't that great. ::I am currently on Verizon's network in South Florida.

for the Samsung SCH-A850:
Metro's got a winner
Just purchased this handset for my brother this past weekend...the phone is currently on MetroPCS's network: PROS: --Very lightweight...I was surprised by this...but still screwed together very well. --Good solid flip mechanism...opens and closes very easily with no hinge travel. --Clear, easy to read Samsung menu and graphical interface...just another example of Samsung ingenuity. --This phone is on MetroPCS's all digital CDMA network in South Florida...they've improved to the point where they're a viable alternative to the big guns. Nice, clear signal. Holds a ...

for the Sanyo SCP-4900:
Right on, Sanyo!
I bought this phone in August of 2002 for a ridiculously low price. PROS: -Nice bright screen -Firm, "clickety-clack" buttons -Amazing reception -Amazing voice quality and speaker phone CONS: -Just one...this handset is a tad too big I used Sprint till December of 2003 in South Florida.

for the Nokia 3589i / 3587i:
Nokia Quality.
First, let it be known that I MUCH prefer bar-style phones to flips. PROS: Very loud ear piece volume and ringers. This is a huge must for me. Very bright screen (could use the thing as a flashlight if you wanted). Durable SOB: This thing is tough. Period. Reception is excellent. Out of Verizon's lineup, this thing holds a signal the best. Very intuitive menu system. Easy to learn. CONS: None. Oh, by the way...I'm on Verizon in South Florida. And I'm ever so patiently waiting ...

for the Samsung SCH-A310:
A Trooper
Pros: This phone (for being so cheap) has amazing voice quality. Gets great reception. Good battery life. Is actually a tough little phone...solid flip construction. Clear, mono-color screen. Cons: Nothing particular comes to mind. I've used this phone on Verizon's network in South Florida.

for the Motorola V600:
Misses the Mark
Why is it that Motorola can't build good phones anymore? They come out with the first desireable line they've managed to put together in years, and they screw it up. The V600 has all kinds of software quirks...it infuriated me in the two weeks I used it. AT&T's GSM coverage and call quality in South Florida is horrendous. What a downer...it's possibly the coolest phone I've seen in years.

for the Nokia 3300:
Taco to go...
CONS: Plasticky exterior that creaks and squeaks. --Awkward speaking position. --So so screen quality. PROS: Typically great Nokia reception. --Neat qwerty keyboard. It works as advertised on AT&T's service. Just a tad on the cumbersome side, though.

Oct 13, 2003, 6:27 AM
for the Kyocera 2325:
Caveat Emptor
This is a fine, basic phone for the price. It has good voice quality and good reception on Verizon's network. A little bit of advice to the people grouching about the fact that this device has no speaker phone: all you had to do was read about the phone before you bought it.

Oct 8, 2003, 12:48 PM
for the Nokia 3650:
Two cents
Let's get one thing straight, first...this phone does not have an enlarged SIM card. Get your facts right before reporting them here. The slot that Mr. Devon reported to be a larger SIM slot is, in fact, the memory card slot. SIM cards are all the same size. CONS: Nokia cut some corners in the construction of this phone...the plastics and fit and finish leave something to be desired. Also, it's too thick, and awkwardly shaped. PROS: Everything else. ...

for the Sanyo SCP-4700:
I just recently came to own this phone after signing on to a family plan with two other members of my family. I had bought it to eventually replace my father's 4700 if anything happened to it (due to the fact that he really liked the phone). Well, it was still sitting around brand new in a box when it came time to add my line to the plan...so I used the new 4700. This phone not only has ...
