Re: So ATT employees: Is anybody buying the NON-Google retarded Motorola Backflip?
Very well said PACWEST! You have covered all the points of opensource Android.
If I could just reiterate and speak to any AT&T employees here, please do not take this as criticism of your company. It is simply a acknowledgement of what your average smartphone user of the future will be looking for and expecting when they do make the switch from their feature phone to a smartphone.
AT&T already has one closed platform device on their network, that being the ...
Re: So ATT employees: Is anybody buying the NON-Google retarded Motorola Backflip?
Lets be honest, first off this phone is a Motorola abomination. They made this as a social networking handset for kids and to re-establish their name in the AT&T market. AT&T will use this handset to lock in family contracts every time Jr. loses his phone. The fact that AT&T crippled the Android OS won't matter to a 14 year old.
Re: Concern of Oversaturation
As I understand it all android phones will be able to run at least some of 2.1, hardware will be the limiting factor.

Another reason I support them is because they're not forced. If you don't want to be in a contract, pay full price for the phone.
Thank you, good point.
Thats what I do, buy my own unlocked GSM phone and use it on the network of my choice.
Four the last 4+ years it has been AT&T.
Decent service at a fair price. I have no problem with AT&T.
I can't even tell you what their customer service number is.... can't remember ...
Re: Concern of Oversaturation
I understand your concern and agree that a fragmented platform is not desirable, however, that being said some fragmentation has to be expected in a new and maturing OS platform.
Two points I would like to make.
One is the consumer has to be responsible for doing their research into the phone they purchase. If they want the latest OS version they must expect to pay more as it will be installed on a premium phone such as the N1.
Two ...
Re: Nexus One on ATT
Pretty much just click on the microphone icon and speak what you want the text to read.
The window will then say "working" which means it is sending the speech to Google's servers for translation and then it resends it back to the phone in a text form. It has to have a data connection to work either cellular or wifi.
Check out the Google phone site opening page, click on the microphone inside the Google search bar at the top ...

Not a big need for typing, you just touch the microphone icon and speak what you want the text to write. It is ...
Re: Nexus One on ATT
The reception is very good on voice calls. Data transmission is excellent as well but is only EDGE speeds on AT&T. Speeds are good enough for browsing and most data needs however you will want to use wifi to download podcast and such.
I like the OS however coming from S60 (Nokia N95) Android seems less mature. Android has less apps built into the OS but I am discovering you can add many of the missing features through the Marketplace ...

I have a Nexus One on AT&T. What info are you looking for?

These are the apps I have currently installed on my Nexus One.

2) Beyond Pod for podcast and rss feeds. Paid app.
3) Data Counter Widget, keeps count of data used on both cellular and wifi networks. Free. Thank you Roy Solberg.
4) SMS Backup, backs up SMS messages to Gmail account. Free. Thank you Chris Studer.

So when you convert a DVD, how big is the file size?
Also, I heard that when you download a song from the Amazon mp3 market that it gets saved to the phones internal memory. Is that true? And if so is there an option to move the song to the microsd card?
The DVD size for the average 2 hour film is about 1gb when converted.
The Amazonmp3 does store music on your sd card. When you initiate a purchase ...

I would love to help out with "Chokehold" but usually at noon I'm in a area with no AT&T coverage. Probably the reason I don't own a iphone. Imagine AT&T if you will, how many iphones you would sell if you actually had a good network!
Re: The New "Else" previewed in London Nov. 24th
Being as the the phone is quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA 850/1900/2100 you should be able to buy one unlocked as soon as it goes to full production. Watch for review units in early 2010, if you see that a release date can't be far behind.
If you try some of the phones features from the website it shows a rather unique UI and features never seen on a mobile phone before.
If you really want to get this phone you ...

Hey AT&T, where are the Android phones? Not everyone wants a iphone. We know its your precious sales leader and that your in bed with Apple but you really need to consider Android before your customers leave for other carriers, all of which carry Android phones.

I believe it says it's "compatible" w/ATT. Which only means something if you can afford to buy it unlocked, just because a handset is "compatible" w/ATT doesn't mean they're going to pick up. There are a lot of phones that are compatible w/ATT but are too good for them to carry.
Actually, if you look at Samsung's history they never sell NAM's unlocked. Samsung has their nose so far up the network operators butts its pathetic.

I didn't say they were stupid, I said they wouldn't add a app to the phone.
My 9 out of 10 was a over-exaggeration, I should of said "many" owners would not add another app.

$70 a month minimum without text..... WOW!
A smartphone for people not smart enough to know it. Face it, 9 out of 10 AT&T customers will never add another app to this phone and if you told them they had a S60 phone in their hand they would say, "No, its a Nokia". They will never know AT&T made Nokia leave out the wi-fi, cripple the GPS and only give them a puny 2mp. camera. I would bet they made them leave out the podcasting app ...

Re: Is it S60 or the camera???
Thats why I recommended a Nokia N series device.
The 5800 is not a N series device.
The N86 should be excellent choice for multimedia creation.
Cheers.
Re: Is it S60 or the camera???
Its not S60, its the cameras in those phones. Typically Nokia puts better photo/video quality into their N Series line. The N95, N96, N82 and N86 are all very strong on multimedia creation and have cameras with Carl Zeiss lenses. I love shooting photos and video with my N95. You can pick up a N95 now for $300, quite the bargain now.
Re: Nokia's problems.
Nokia's problem in the U.S. is that they are developing their own revenue portal, namely the Ovi site. U.S. carriers don't want this, they have their own revenue services to sell to their network users, they don't want any competition. For that reason you will not see many Nokia phones offered from U.S. carriers unless they can come to a revenue sharing agreement as it concerns to Ovi.
IMO, the next Nokia phone to have significant sales in the U.S. ...

Re: What idiots are running Nokia? Has it dawned on them they're getting their butts handed to them?
When Express Music store is added to the Nokia Ovi portal it then makes sense. Nokia Ovi is what itunes is to Apple. Ovi allows for the Nokia user to sync contacts, maps, music, photos/video, gaming, calendar, and file storage directly from their phone to the cloud and vice-verse.
The free music for a year and then new is just marketing, maybe good, maybe bad time will tell.
Still at $350 for a S60 touchscreen smartphone with all its features and ...
Re: Nokia NSeries handsets are too good for AT&T. . .
I'm looking forward to a qwerty combined with a large touch display, seems best of both worlds to me. Just hope Nokia releases it in tri-band hspda from the get go.
Re: Nokia NSeries handsets are too good for AT&T. . .
Dear AT&T, Please don't ever offer any Nokia N or E series phones. I prefer to buy my own unlocked.
Re: Nokia 5800 (aka Tube) coming this month
I didn't know Nokia filed a 5800 with AT&T 3G bands. AT&T may show interest in it. What do think it would go for? I'm thinking $150 to 200 with a 2 year contract. Nokia really doesn't need to hit a home run with some phone in this market soon, they are losing too much business to the likes of Samsung and LG.
Re: Nokia 5800 (aka Tube) coming this month
Definitely not on AT&T, it would be a direct competitor to the iphone (touchscreen multimedia phone) a most certain no-no for AT&T. You'll have to buy it unlocked if you want to use it on AT&T.
T-Mobile may pick it up but you will have no 3G.
Re: They tell me
Its been around already for about 60 some years.
Its made by Western Electric, revolutionary new rotory, dial the number yourself, excellent reception through the nationwide Bell network.
Mostly available in black but also in tan.
Red is available but only in Washington D.C.
Re: Walmart Selling a 4gb 3G Iphone??
If Apple makes the activation simple enough... and it should (remember... iphone is made for itards) there will be no reason for the itard to go into a AT&T store.
Re: This is great news....
This is great news for rural areas indeed. Being software based, this would be the most economical way for a provider to upgrade their data network for their customers and I think if they wish to sell data plans anywhere other than big cities they had better implement this upgrade.

When do we in the U.S. get it?!
I would suspect we will see it in third quarter '09. As someone else has already stated, it would be really great if they made a tri-band hsdpa with 850, 1900 and 1700 for the North American market. Unlocked it could run on AT&T, T-Mobile or Rogers.
If the price I've seen of $650 is accurate count me in for two. I will upgrade my wife's and my N95-3.

Don 't really need Boy Genius to confirm what I already know. There are a lot of phones that are better than the iphone. Regarding the iphone, other than its slick itard interface it doesn't really have much to offer.
Re: Loss of signal problem turns out to be good news.
I haven't seen the 3G icon yet here. The wife and I have Nokia N95-3 for U.S. 3G. They work fine in 3G down in Phoenix. Our daughter has a N82, it does not have the 3G bands so she will remain on EDGE. Looking forward to the 3G up here.
