Re: TDMA Will not be shutdown.

Cingular Wireless will continue to support TDMA for many years more as well as analog. There will be no flash cut in any market. GSM and TDMA will operate in unison. There may be degradation in the TDMA service but the support will not cease.
Thanks.
Thanks. That's exactly what I needed to know. Now, if her 5165 craps out, she'll HAVE to get a GSM handset? Is that right? She's telling me that she doesn't want to sign another ...
When will TDMA service be shut down?
My mom has an old Nokia 5165, and she heard that Cingular will no longer be allowing people to use TDMA handsets on the network. I know they don't sell GAIT plans or phones anymore, so they're definitely pushing people onto the GSM network... She also doesn't want to get rid of her phone. She's kind of old, and she's comfortable with what she has now...
I'm just curious if any of you guys had heard anything about a firm ...
new Verizon acquisistions
Has anybody heard rumors about VZ buying up smaller carriers? I've heard things about Centennial & MobileTel, but that was a while back & now nobody will talk about it. I'm just curious.
Re: Trimode or All Digital?
It depends on who VZ has the roaming agreement with. In South Louisiana, they work with ALLTEL & Centennial, but only on analog. I roam very infrequently, and I've never been charged for using Centennial's network.

I wonder if he has properly conditioned the Lithum - Ion Battery? I believe the procedure is to run it down to nothing and then recharge fully. This procedure, I believe must be done at least twice.
Li-ion batteries really don't need conditioning. The older Ni-Cd batteries DID need conditioning as you describe, and they wouldn't last very long anyway. The Ni-MH batteries were a good bit better, and the Li-ion is better still.

The Phone That Would Not Die...
Look at it this way. Moto is up to the "v" model already. They'll run out of letters to append to the end of the model number, and that will be the end of that.
Re: LG VX4500 - My Review & Recommendation
Thanks for the useful review. The LGs are generally pretty good phones, at least the mid-to-high end handsets. I'm not a big fan of the VX3100, and I hated the 510, VX1 & VX10.
You're right about the MOK. Don't buy the one from Radio Crack. It's overpriced & not as functional as the OEM version. Then again, most of the stuff at R$ is overpriced junk - take it from someone who knew firsthand...
Re: 2megapixel on 2G
Sending a 2MB file as packet data on a 2G network would take friggin' forever, I think. Especially on Japan's PDC net - lots of people using it all at once, you see. Maybe using some sort of heavy-duty compression algorithm would speed things up, but I think Rich could explain it a bit better.

It lets you take close-up shots, like a photo of a business card, for example.
Rich is right. It's a cool feature on larger cameras, & very useful if you like doing extreme close-ups. I'm just a little afraid of the legendary Audiovox quality...
Re: ANy new plans??
I heard that new promos were coming out beginning of May (at least in the South region), but what the hell, you never know...
last to market...
It's about time... If they ever release this one, it'll really put the VZ PTT on the map...
Re: 1X network in Iraq
Thanks, Rich. That's exactly the answer I was looking for. I'm guessing my boss had heard of the initiative to put up a CDMA net, that's why he was pushing it so hard. We kept TELLING him that everything else in the region was GSM, but he's the prototype of the Pointy-Haired Boss...
Re: New phones
1. NOBODY knows. What we see & hear changes almost daily.
2. When they're good & ready? That's been the experience in the past. Testing, testing, testing is the usual excuse.
Re: V60s Microphone
The 4400 & V60S/P are roughly equal, at least in my area (South Louisiana), with the 4400 being marginally better. The 8600 I'm not too fond of - I've seen more than my fair share of broken/defective ones. Now, whether or not this was due to customer defects, ie dropping onto concrete, dog chewing on it, I don't know.
Re: Disabled-PPT v60P on a non-PTT account?
Used to be, you could put a V60P on a non-PTT plan, but the phone would try to access the 1X server every few minutes, & this process would:
A. run the battery down quickly
B. run up a substantial amount of data charges.
Consequently, VZ apparently will not let you activate a V60P on a non-PTT plan any more.
If you really want a V60, just get the V60S. It's pretty much the same phone, just without the PTT circuitry. It ...
Re: questions
Look, I'm not trying to get into a pissing match with you. An ESN change SHOULD NOT change your date, but, for some reason beyond the ken of man, it DOES, at least on eROES. Maybe it doesn't on i2k, but that's how it shows up. Do I like it? No. I don't. Is it right? No, it's not. I'm just telling you what shows up.
Is it possible to fix the problem when you call in to Channel ...
Re: questions
My bad. On your first point, I misspoke. You are correct. You do get a $100 credit, not a "free upgrade".
On my second point, I still maintain that I'm correct. Using eROES, doing an ESN change OF ANY SORT will reset your equipment replacement date. If you don't believe me, I'll be glad to change the ESN on you phone for you...
Re: questions
The AT&T phone will not work on Verizon's network. AT&T is either TDMA or GSM, and Verizon is CDMA. Plus, doing an ESN switch screws up the date for your free upgrade.
Re: Kentucky VZW Footprint
My wife just spent a week in Paducah with a VX6000 and had a fantastic signal the whole time - in fact, she had less signal in the Memphis airport than she did in downtown Paducah. Native Verizon signal, too, not extended network.
Re: CDMA / GSM
Troll bait.
1X network in Iraq
My company is sending me & a couple of other guys out there. We need a reliable mobile Internet connection. I know there's a CDMA network in Iraq, but I need to know if my aircard will work. If not, I'll have to use my phone as a modem along with a connectivity kit, right?
Re: Typical Consumer Union Tripe
Usually, "those customers" are Sprint customers, heh heh heh...
I can hear it now, "Whaddya mean this phone is $250-$500?!? It was free yesterday..."
I weep for the future.
Re: wow.....
The main result of this, I think, is that the price that customers pay for cell phones in the first place will skyrocket. No free phone for you!
Re: Motorola C343
:D
Insufficient data. The 333 seems to be a bit of a dog, at least initially it was. I had a few, sent them back due to software & other issues. Don't know if Moto fixed it. The 343 at least offers analog coverage, a must if you live in a non-urban area. You generally get what you pay for with cheapo/free phones...
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Guess we've entered the age of the throwaway phone... analog, analog, analog, how I have missed thee !
Possible reception probs?
I've been getting reports of dropped calls & roaming on VZ's America's Choice network in the South Louisiana area, but IMHO it's more customer defect than anything else. As far as I can tell, this is a great phone at a very decent price. If there IS a problem, VZ better fix it quick, because they're getting ready to turn this phone into a Freeup handset... and we all know how good certain prepay customers are at operating cellular ...
Re: what good is a cell phone if it doesnt take pics
Ummm... it makes calls, it recieves calls, and if it's an old-school bag-phone, you can crack someone's skull with it. Bag-phones also make a handy boat anchor.
Who says it's gotta be able to take nekkid pictures of your girlfriend in order to be useful ;)
Re: VX3100
Can't restrict the phonebook on the 3100, as far as I know. Try either a Motorola handset like a T720/730 or a Kyocera handset like the 2325. The phonebooks on those phones can be locked.
