Re: Data Cable w/ POWER
It charged the battery for me, no doubt. I was at zero and two hours later it was full. I had to turn the phone off/on to reset the battery indicator (wasn't moving during charge).
The plug to the phone was also warm during the 2.5 hours it took to charge. After full charge, the plug was cool. So, there was much more current flowing during the 2 hours it was charging.
I can do the experiment ...
Re: Data Cable w/ charging Hack
Made phone call without battery in the phone! This is a great cable.
Re: Data Cable with POWER
Popinjay:
I bought this cable:
http://www.gomadic.com/lg-cu500-coi led-power-hot-sync-charge-charger-usb-cable.h tml
and it provides power to the phone. I can surf without the battery in the phone. I did some heavy surfing, trying to draw as much current as I could, and had no problems. Will try a phone call later.
I don't know if the phone is charging (no moving bars), but maybe it is charging without saying so.
Thanks for the tip!

Re: Data Cable w/ charging Hack
Nice work! I'll keep an eye out for the details. I have a soldering iron somewhere. This proves that Cingy could be providing a charging USB cable at almost no extra cost if they wanted to. They are deliberately crippling the phone. They want to to buy the BB service and a BB phone. AHH!

Crippleware
People, I believe the reason why (1) LG doesn't provide the sync software and (2) Cingy doesn't sell a USB cord that charges is because:
Cingular wants you to buy the Blackberry service that (1) syncs with Outlook, etc. They also want you to use a BB to surf the net (tethered to your computer), not your CU500 (tethered to your computer). I use the CU500 to surf the net (as a modem), but the battery wears out ...
Re: USB CABLE/MICROSD CARD INFO
Does that USB cable charge the phone?
I think that cingy's USB data cable doesn't charge the phone because they don't want you to use this phone for high-speed data teathering to the phone.
Re: ringtone as message alert?
May be possible. See the following link:
http://comerford.cc/wordpress/?page_ id=146
I have not done what you suggest - and what is taught on the page cited above - but I did get the annoying confirmation ring to go away.
Does anyone know where the all-white and orange Cingular logo is stored for the external screen? I would like to remove it using bitpim, but I can't find where the logo is stored. I would like an all-black background to save battery ...
Washington, DC coverage POOR
Well, don't feel bad. I live in Washington, DC (Glover Park) and we have 3G, but the coverage is so spotty that I put my phone (LG CU500) in 2G only mode. Otherwise, it keeps dropping calls when it switches from 3G to 2G. Even if that were a phone problem, I still can't get reliable 3G data downloads because of the weak 3G signals.

Re: Tethering
I was able to tether my phone to the PC and use it as a modem (and surf at 600+ kbps) using Cingular's Connection Manager with some instructions from Wikipedia. I don't have the expensive package, just teh $20 per month deal.
More later if you would like.

Battery life and Chocolate
Another benefit of switching to 2G only is a longer battery life (as in time between charges).
Also, it seems that usability is a problem with the Chocolate (see quote below from NYT). The CU500 has issues, but it seems the Chocolate is worse:
"Whenever I review a product this badly designed, I just stare at the ceiling and try to imagine how it could possibly have gotten out the door. Haven’t successes like the iPod and the Treo taught ...
Re: TURNED OFF 3G, BACK TO GSM
I just tried it and this works. I'm at work with a strong 3G signal (3G in upper left hand corner of screen). I was able to switch to the 2G EDGE (as indicated in upper left hand corner). I then switched back to "Dual Mode" and it went back to 3G.
This is a great feature since my house is in a weak 3G area (in Washington, DC). I kept dropping calls in my own ...
Re: Suggestions for the 1st OTA Firmware Update....
A cingular rep also told me that LG had just updated the firmware, but I haven't tried to download it yet.

Re: Reminder tone for voicemail & missed calls?
I looked for it and couldn't find it either. I too liked that feature on my old motos.
LG, if you are listening, please add this as a feature in the next version of software.

Re: 2.5mm to 3.5mm jack converter - WORKING!
Yesterday I received the 2.5mm (male) to 3.5mm (female) adaptor that vdp found at cellphonemall.net. And. . . it works GREAT!!! I can now plug a standard headset into my phone and listen to music in STEREO. The left/right channels work - I tested it with the LG sample that came with the phone, as the "LG Electronics" sound switches back and forth between left and right.
Thanks vdp!!

Re: Vibration ALERT for TEXT MESSAGING for LG CU500???
For text messages, you can have it ring or vibrate (when in silent mode), but not both at the same time.
To put in silent mode, press and hold the # from the home page.
I hate this too and posted about it below.

Re: DUN and done!!!!!
In MD, driving north on 95 at 80mph, switched to EDGE network and now getting 37.5 kbps says cnet.com.
Switched easily between 3G and EDGE without a problem, but during my initial connection I had to rest my phone because it kept refusing a connection. I could surf on my phone either, which is why I rest the phone. That worked.

Re: DUN and done!!!!!
Thank you all for the help. I finally got it working. I'm connected right now, actually, at about 600 kbps as measured from
http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.htm l
I've learned a lot in the process (not an expert Windows user). I don't know if you really need the LG driver that I mention above or not, but it's working.

Re: Whats your tethering speed?
From the cnet bandwidth test:
667.8 kbps

Re: DUN?
Thanks. I should have tried there first, of course.
Now that I've tried the Cingular support site, I get the same 619 error. It connects, but can't authorize. I tried the Cingular instructions for the Connection Manager and setting up my own connection.
Hmmm. Let me know what else you guys are trying.

Re: DUN? jbzcar
The link of the file is:
http://us.lge.com/download/product/fil e/1000000399/LGUSBModemDriver_Eng_Ver_4.5.exe
If that dosn't work, then give me your email address and I'll e-mail the exe to you.
Remember that I can't get my phone to work as a modem, so you may be going down the wrong path here.

Re: DUN? jbzcar
I think I was wrong about "no drivers needed" in one of my earlier posts. I was confused at the time.
It is possible (I'm not an expert) that you need this driver: LGUSBModemDriver_Eng_Ver_4.5.exe
I found it by googling the name and downloading it. In fact, this was the link where I downloaded it: http://www.fileindex.net/search.aspx/src~LGUS BModemDriver_Eng_Ver_4.5.exe/fs~1365874
Th e file resides at us.lg.com, so I ignored the "this software is not verified by Microsoft" errors when installing it. I now ...
One step closer
Okay, I tried one more thing and I'm much closer now. I reset my computer after installing the LG modem driver. I then make sure that the phone is connected, but I exit from the USB mass storage mode on the phone. Then, the phone is recognized by the Cingular Communication Manager.
The Communications Manager created a DUN named LG Mobile USB Modem #2. I don't know why the #2, but whatever.
I can see ...
Re: DUN?
Okay, I give up. I tried to set up the phone as a modem, but have not succeeded.
I have the data cable and bluetooth. Using either, I can browse my 1GB SanDisk memory card.
This is how I tried to set up the phone as a modem:
1. I followed these instructions, and tried to manually set up a DUN:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cingular_Wireles s_FAQ/MEdia_Configuration
That didn't work (with the USB cable). I tried installing the Cingualar Connection Manager, ...

I may have over paid:

So far the only thing I've seen that I think will work is:

(posted by vdp) I ordered it, and will report back when I get it.

Re: 3.5MM to 2.5MM
Make sure you get a "three band" ("four pin") adapter. The CU500 supports a stereo headset, so you have four conductors/pins - left, right, mic, and common. There is an insulator between each conductor, so that makes three black "bands."
So, the male should look like this:
left/right/mic/common
Where "left," "right," "mic," and "common" are conductors (gold/silver) and each "/" is an insulator. (I don't know if the order of conductors above is correct, however).
At ...
Re: 3.5MM to 2.5MM
Depends on how you look at it:
2.5 male to 3.5 female OR
3.5 femaile to 2.5 male
Regardless, you want a cable with two ends, one end with 2.5 male and one end with 3.5 female.

my hinge is solid - no play or give at all. the phone is probably the most solid flip phone I've had (had two motos before).

Re: Using LG CU500 in non-3G area?
I was told by cingular that I needed a new SIM for the 3G network. May have been BS, don't know. But I didn't care because I had a brand new SIM - they made me get one when I went from my old AT&T phone to a Cingy BB.
Re: 2.5mm to 3.5mm headphone jack converter
Thank you very much for this information. Fortunately, I was too busy to buy the parts (for assembly) yet. I'll just buy this converter instead.

Re: headphones only play in one ear
Thanks! I think I'm going to give this a try.
What is the difference between CA010 and 4CYXJACK? The description is different, but I'm not sure what would be different electrically. I'm going to buy both the CA010 and 4CYXJACK, since they are so cheap.
Stay tuned . . .

Re: headphones only play in one ear
Hmmm. I think I figured this out:
3 ring = 3 insulators, 4 conductors
left/right/mic/common = three x "/"
2 ring = 2 insulators, 3 conductors
mono/mic/common = two x "/"
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Where can I find a 3 ring 2.5mm to a 3.5mm stereo jack converter? I would like to play music from my phone to my car stereo, where I don't have any fancy connections other than a belkin FM transmitter.
I see a 2 ...
Re: CU500 vs RAZR v3, which should I get?
The vibrate OR ring applies only to receiving text messages - not to receiving a call.
The CU500 phone will vibrate and ring, or vibrate then ring, or just one of the two when receiving a call.
If you keep your phone for a long time, then you have to consider that eventually Cingular will move entirely to 3G (no?) - so that would weigh in favor of the CU500.
Otherwise, I have no idea what phone you ...
Re: Speakerphone
The microphone is not only on the inside, but when the phone is closed the microphone is right next to the speaker. That would lead to positive feedback to an extent that could not be corrected by firmwar/software (my guess).
So, it wouldn't work even if the phone didn't hang up.
I note, however, if you go into settings(9), call(5), answer mode (4), you can select how the phone answers - key press or opening up the phone, ...
Re: BroadbandConnect Coverage (3G)
As the map says in the footnote:
"Actual coverage area may differ substantially from map graphics . . . ."
You're telling me! The map covers my house*, which doesn't get 3G service; and the map doesn't cover my office**, which does get 3G service (sometimes).
* Glover Park, Washington, DC, near Georgetown.
** Fairfax, VA
Get a real network, not a vapor network.

Re: Good phone, but...
Hmm. I checked this out. "Volume changed to vibrate" means silent mode. No call ring, no sms alert.
For an SMS, I have a choice of an (1) alert sound but no vibrate; or (2) vibrate but no sound on the phone whasoever.
But there is no way of getting alert sound AND vibrate at the same time for a message. What a shame.
Maybe I'm just too used to all the features of the Motorola. I'm ...
Re: Good phone, but...
My additions and comments:
- No way to have phone vibrate when you receive a text message. Major problem for me when I'm at a bar looking to meet up with my peeps. The phone can vibrate when receiving a call, however.
>>>-No external indicator light that you have new voicemail/text
I found this to be annoying too.
>>>-The sound played when a new voicemail/text message is delivered is played only once.
My former Moto had this feature ...
Re: No 3G coverage in Washington, DC?!
Correct and good point - when I'm not in a 3G area, I get good reception on the non-3G netowrk. But I wish I got 3G at my own home!
