Re: Is 30-Pin even any good?
It depends on how it is connected to the PC. In 99% of installations in today's world, the 30-pin connector, when connected via USB, is a USB connector.
http://www.allpinouts.org/index.php/Apple _iPod,_iPad_and_iPhone_dock
You'll notice that pins 1-6 are for audio in and out (accomplish the same thing with a 3.5mm jack, industry standard)
Pins 8, 9 and 10 are for video, and 9 and 10 are only for iPod Photo/Color. 8 is composite (all of the above could be replaced and enhanced with an ...
Re: Tiered data is good, just not the way VZW did it
Don't despair CellStudent. I too was quite annoyed when I found out that the minimum plan will have no impact on my bottom line... but then I got to thinking...
Does this open up the door to shared data? In addition to promising tiered data, there have been mentions out there of shared data on accounts.
If I can buy up $30 for 2GB to share across both of my smartphones, my bill effectively drops 50% for data services. That'd ...
Re: Brew Text Messages
Have you switched from a basic/feature phone to a smartphone? You may have had an app on your old phone that would auto-start based on receiving those texts. Common ones are VZ Navigator, Backup Assistant, Mobile E-mail. Anything with push notifications.
You may be able to reactivate your old phone temporarily online, remove all apps from it, then put your new one back on.
Re: NE2 Discount Upgrade + $100 Credit: What is my best option?
Don't worry you can use your credit if you have it (FAQ 6 under New & Existing Customer Eligibility).
http://support.vzw.com/faqs/iphone/iphone _faq.html
However, if Verizon ends the program as reported, you won't get a new credit after 2 years.
Re: Make the consumers pay for their consumption? NO WAY!
I would "Like" your post but I'm afraid my ISP will send a bill to Phonescoop for it.
Re: GSM vs. CDMA
hahaha, the phrasing just reminded me of that post, so "lightbulb" was a pretty narrow search on this forum.
:)
Re: I would buy it
Agreed. I would for sure throttle for more data. Especially if I wound up with a 4G device early in the commercial deployment because even You Tube and Pandora are designed with 3G speed and limitation in mind. Unless you're a data card user, I expect phone apps won't really harness "4G" for awhile. Also considering the pricing models, there will still be incentive for devs to be efficient for some time, too.
Re: GSM vs. CDMA
ha. Funny you should phrase it that way... do you remember this post?

Re: The eris is the HTC Hero
The Eris, hardware wise, has a hard time keeping up with 2.1. Android just outgrew the specs of this phone. I probably wouldn't get 2.2 if they did offer it just because the requirements aren't there.
When I click on someone to call on this phone with 2.1, it sits for about 30 seconds before initiating the call. It takes 2-3 rings before it can even display the caller ID.
Luckily, I barely use this phone for calls. I've ...
Re: Droid app security question
In my experience, GPS is typically about advertising targeting. Most free apps are going to have an AdMob banner somewhere within, and location helps to target (e.g., when I text a friend and say "what sounds good for dinner", my ads start showing "Find Columbus Restaurants").
While I don't necessarily see the need for devs to require "Fine" GPS Location for ad targeting (more precise), that is usually what its about, except for the obvious apps like Maps and ...
Re: I'm shocked
Quite the opposite actually. Everything I'm seeing says that calls will actually still be switched on the VZW circuit network, meaning skype-to-skype and skype to international calls will still be handled the same way on the VZW network as any other call. Just instead of switching off the network at the call terminating carrier, it'll switch off the network at a Skype VoIP gateway of some sort. Calls through that gateway will be billed and rated by Skype, and ...
Green... but not enough
So I had AT&T U-Verse up until Monday. They asked me to return my equipment to any UPS Store. So I did... and they told me to throw away the remote and power cords. Its cheaper to make new ones than it is to pay to ship them back.
Seems like there's some more work these companies can get done on the green front than just paperless billing.
Re: LTE MiFi...
I'll second that. Love my EV-DO one.
Re: 4G
I'm reasonably certain there are some international carriers using Wi-Max. Not sure where, or how many, but as I understand it, there's a decent international presence.
I don't know what the broadcast spectrum around the world for Wi-max is. LTE has more advantage of many more carriers using it, as well as I think there are at least similar frequencies being used, so smaller, cheaper radios are involved in producing world phones.
I don't follow a lot of the ...
Re: Verizon adds Skype
My interest in this is more about what the Phone Scoop news blip states "Calls will be routed over Verizon's Circuit-switched network"
Which actually implies that calls will be routed like any other traditional voice service, but as far as Verizon is concerned, it mobile-terminates (is switched off of the VZW network) to the Skype network, and then continues however they want to work it out.
If that's correct, it poses a significant cost savings to Verizon (no local carrier ...

Re: Fewer Bars In More Places?
To be fair, AT&T did not take VZ to court, they filed a complaint with the BBB, which anyone can do if they have a problem or issue with a company they have been unable to resolve. Member organizations achieve ratings by responding and resolving the concerns.
VZ requested that the courts uphold the advertising as true. I'm not sure if the litigation involves AT&T at all, maybe someone can shed some light on that, but VZ is the ...
Re: Question about verizon bill levels
Think about it, both accounts are under your name and SSN. When one of them goes delinquent, they're going to be calling up the acct holder. Then they're going to start looking to figure out if they're at risk anywhere else. Suddenly they happen to find your other account.
When one bill doesn't get paid, and its in your name, you are responsible for it. Your credit is on the line because of that. They're going to be ...
Re: VZW 3G
Generally, 3G is not used for the voice product most people use. 2G is sufficient for this. Some customers could theoretically use 3G for VoIP voice, but truly, that would be data too.
Down the line, I'd personally expect most carriers to start using 3G and 4G to handle the voice product once the footprint is big enough.
For now though, signal indicators are just variance between manufacturers and software versions. Don't quote me on this part, but I'm pretty ...
Re: Cancelation Help...
Yes, you definitely have the option of going back to your old plan without the data as long as you drop the BlackBerry (it requires a data plan).
You can do this in a few ways. If you just purchased the BlackBerry, return it. Upgrade to something else that doesn't require data.
If you go the BlackBerry elsewhere or otherwise didn't renew with it, or if you just want to hang onto it for in the future, switch back ...
Re: No Keyboard? And You Call This a BlackBerry?
Agreed, Midnight. The problems Pogue pointed out will easily be hammered out in software updates. Pogue even pointed out in his precious review of the iPhone that it wasn't perfect at launch, he just spent far less text on the page devoted to the initial release problems.
I wonder if its coincidental that Pogue has a new book out "iPhone: the missing manual". Seems that if a phone stole some of the iPhone's "thunder" (hahaha pun inteneded), he could ...
Re: Almost bought Storm
Because the law says that carriers are to offer a trial period for you to decide if you would like to keep the service or not before the commitment is considered binding.
So, in VZW's case, the trial period is 30 days. The law states that should you decide to cancel your service in the trial period (30-days), you can, with no contract penalty (Early Term Fee).
In your example, now you have a phone you paid $250 for, ...
Re: Employee Benefits
Sorry, didn't realize this was an old thread.
Re: Employee Benefits
401k matched dollar for dollar up to 6% of your pay. Pre tax and post tax options. Depending on your job, up to 8% of your salary paid as a bonus every Feb.
Employee plans are consumer plans with a discount. Phones are generally more expensive than what consumers pay, though. New phones, such as the Voyager, Storm, etc. are usually held until consumer demand subsides before employees have the option to buy. Changing plans isn't too bad. Just ...
Re: Futuredated Port Out
Joe, maybe you ought to read your own service contract before you go griping.
This is your precious AT&T's policy too:
"BILLING AND PAYMENT
Except as provided below, monthly service and certain other charges are billed one month in advance, and there is no proration of such charges if service is terminated on other than the last day of your billing cycle. "
Re: The real reason Verizon bought AllTel......
Well put, CellStudent. All of your posts are direct, to the point, and accurate.
To expound on what you said:
I really hope that potential new customers or customers going through the Alltel acquisition pay attention to your posts more so than AvgJoe.
You're exactly right. VZW bought Alltel to make more money. Cellular carriers in this country operate on 2 fundamental principles: 1) Make money 2) Invest in stuff that makes more money.
To elborate to the 2nd of ...
Re: vz navigator
VZ Navigator TOPS VZW's get it now sales month after month. Its not going anywhere.
No initial investment
No expensive map updates to buy
For the occasional user, there's a $2.99 option for 24-hours
Software is making the transition to PDA's
Uses assisted GPS so it is not as volatile getting a "fix" in poor weather or other adverse conditions
Re: Advantages of AT&T
Ugh...
Once again, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture (a.k.a. owned by) Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD). Verizon Wireless is NOT a publically traded company. They are owned by two publically traded companies. There is a difference.
Re: Merger.....Finally!!!
I think the intent on the conslidated HSPA/EV-DO chiopset is so that manufacturers of data cards for PC's don't have to market to a particular segment of users (CDMA/GSM user). Saves space, is probably more efficient, and if I'm sitting in an airport with my built-in card and Carrier A's coverage sucks there, I can switch to Carrier B, since most of them have a 24-hour plan.
Think about it. How could an merger of these two companies make sense? ...
Re: Can someone please explain a little better for me......
Verizon Wireless wants to sell you stuff you'll like, and would be likely to buy from them.
Verizon Wireless needs to know what you like.
Verizon Wireless would like to study how you use your phone.
Verizon Wireless operates a wireless network. Studying you is not something they feel like doing directly.
Verizon Wireless would like to have some other company study you for them.
Verizon Wireless needs permission from you for the other company to study you.
Once Verizon Wireless has ...
Re: wow I cannot believe this.
Do you think she'll come back and say that if VZW were unionized it'd be better? :-)
Re: Lets make a list!!!!!!
So, what do we have so far?
Physical keyboard

Activated in store
Local features fully functional out of box
Insurable out of box
EVDO (presumably rev a, at least capapble)

More bluetooth profiles
Vibration touch feedback
Likely wireless sync/mobile e-mail capable for our friendly Outlook ...
Re: Why Did the 8300's Price Go Up?
perhaps a decline in stock of 8300's and not enough 8350's yet for a launch? Increase the cost to slow down demand?
Re: Participation
This was an FCC Mandate that carriers had to have 95% of their subscriber base on e-911 compliant handsets by the deadline. The customer actually has no choice, even if they didn't want a new handset. It was simply a ruling that the FCC handed down, and the carriers were required to comply. How they did it was up to them. As a carrier, your options are:
A) offer the customer a handset deal so good they can't refuse
B) ...
Re: Participation
AT&T, T-Mobile, and VZW got 95% of their subscribers on e-911 compliant devices before the deadline. That's why they're not being fined.
Re: total equip. coverage
Agreed. Most of the major players use Asurion as their insurance vendor. Technically, you can go to Asurion for any reason, say "my phone is broken" and for $50 they'll replace it. The extended warranty (VZW) or equipment warranty service plan for (Sprint) will cover defects, just longer than the OEM warranty. It appears sprint may have a plan available too for damaged phones to replace them over the counter for $50 if there's no insurance, VZW does not ...
Re: Website claims LG KS20 Prada 'definately' coming to Verizon in December!
Didn't the FCC filing say that the KS20 is a GSM phone? It was tested as a GSM device according to the filing for that model name.
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/ blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=832762&nativ e_or_pdf=pdf
So, I'm confused. Is it common for a phone to be RF exposure tested as GSM then later ends up CDMA? I don't follow the FCC site very often.
Re: Question for a VZW Rep.
Ok, there's no need to criticize the customer for repeating what they were told.
Second, a variaion of the "3 strikes" rule exists, but it's a process. It's not set in stone that after 3 replacements, boom, new phone. A lot of factors are considered.
For VZW employees out there, I always phrase the process as "A tech in store or thru tech support on the phone will review the warranty process and see if there are any alternatives" ...
Re: verizon insurance plan. beating the system. loop hole
Though the insurance company *MAY NOT* require a police report any more, Asurion periodically reports the "LOST" esn/MEID's to VZW. We add them to this fun thing called an national deny list. This could happen after you've activated your "lost" env on another line. Either way, suddenly SWITCH Authroization = NO. Suddenly, that phone fails to authenticate. There's not a thing you can do about it.
As everyone else has pointed out, this is illegal. There's a message in ...

Anything is possible, but seriously that's the last thing we need. I don't want some jerk off sending spam or other messages to my cell phone where I get charged and can't even see the number to call them back or block them with.
If it is possible, it is not at this time on verizon and I would assume never will be for precisely this reason. VZW takes a tough stance on spam to begin with. Can't ...
