Re: Prolonged battery life?

Actually, the device and application software plays a huge role in how long the battery lasts on any device. You may or may not know that depending on available signal strength devices will turn up power to the radio to maintain a stable network connection in areas of poor coverage. A bug in the software that controls this function could cause the firmware to constantly run the radio at full power, even in areas of good signal strength. This ...

The history of this issue predates Sprints ownership of Nextel and has nothing to do with dimishing Sprints spectrum. When Nextel built their company they chose to aquire low cost spectrum in a frequency band that was already cluttered (I believe it is somewhere in the 170 mHz area) in the hopes that technology advancements would allow them to operate without interference. Unfortunately that did not happen and the interfernece became more and more an issue. Then Nextel executed what everyone ...

I beleive Sprint/Nextel is actually only one company, they just chose to keep both names for advertising purposes. The oil industry is really considered an oligopoly where a couple of companies dominate the industry rather than only one. We're way off topic here though.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. Even if VZW attempted to buy Sprint (very unlikely, too much debt and network overlap) there would still be plenty of other carriers out there to provide competition like ATT, T-Mob, Alltel, USCC, Cellular South etc...

OK...let's straighten this one out. VZNavigater is now being offered on the BB8830. VZW has not crippled GPS on their devices. The fact that the GPS data in the phone is not available for 3rd party apps has to do with the GPS solution chosen by VZW. Unlike most other carriers, VZW chose to implement GPS based on the built in functionality on the Qualcomm chipsets rather than add a dedicated SIRF chipset to the handsets. 3rd parties wishing to use ...

The fact that VZW has actually defined the download limit in their T&Cs is a good thing for the consumer. At least you know the limits. Other carriers reserve the right to shut you down whenever they want. Read the Sprint T&Cs (as an example). They specfically reserve the right to shut you down for excessive use of their data network. However no one knows what Sprint considers excessive use. So does AT&T. All carriers have this clause. Why? ...

Guys (supremecellgod & nextel18), what background do either of you have in cellular communications? That anyone would actually admit that they made a statement regarding VZW not having enough spectrum to implement DO roaming says a lot. First of all, it's because some carriers do not own spectrum in a particular geographical location that they need to enter roaming agreements in the first place. It has nothing to do with their ability to enter roaming agreements, 1X, EVDO or ...

The amount of condjecture and blatant disinformation I see on these pages amazes me. VZW already offers a phone with WiFi (xv6700) and I beleive they have a couple in the hopper for launch in Q4. Truth be told, it's not the carriers that don't want to offer it but the handset vendors that are the roadblocks. I'm sure you're intentions are good but trust me, your statement is again misleading. The 800Mhz and 1900Mhz frequencies have the same capacity to carry calls when comparing like technology (CDMA to CDMA). The same is not true for CDMA to GSM (GSM uses a less efficent TDMA air interface). So to state that VZW drops calls more frequently because they use the 800Mhz frequency is just not true. In fact the propogation characteristics of the 800Mhz frequency lends itself ...

Gentlemen, Please check my comments further down....there is a link to Sprints Terms & Conditions that clearly describes the same limitations to their PCS VISION network as AT&T and VZW. Think....Sprint and VZW use the same network technology. Why would Spint be able to support unlimitted use on their network and VZW not. OK gentlemen, please read Sprints terms and conditions from the following link: http://www.sprintpcs.com/common/popu ps/popLegalTermsPrivacy.html Look at the second PCS Vision paragraph. It essentially describes the same limitations as AT&T and VZW. Just like Sprint to bury this information under their phone plans page and mislead you with some crap on their home page. There is more than one carrier in Japan. NTT DoCoMo is using W-CDMA. I agree that this version of CDMA is not compatable with CDMA 2000. I never said it was. KDDI uses CDMA 2000. How do I know this? KDDI subscribers can roam on the VZW footprint. So I reiterate my previous statement that Japan is a country that has an extensive W-CDMA and CDMA 2000 footprint. TDMA is not a precursor to GSM. In fact, GSM is a TDMA tehnology. TDMA stands for Time Division Multiple Access where the spectrum used by calls is divided up into time slots. "TDMA" as was used in the US is TDMA with slightly differnt standards than GSM. However, since the air interfaces are almost identical it made more sense for US "TDMA" carriers to switch to GSM. CDMA (code division multiple access) allows multiple calls on one frequency ...

Actually, the higher the frequency, the worse the propogation characteristics. Higher bands such as PCS 1.9Ghz (1900 Mhz) have a difficult time penetrating buildings and are more "line if site" than say, the cellular bandwidth (800-850 Mhz). Take as an example a cordless phone. My first phone was 900 Mhz and it never had a problem anywhere in my house. Starting with 2.4 Ghz I started losing coverage and the 5.8 Ghz models perform the worst. Higher frequencies require ...

You haven't said whether or not you've tried VZW service, but that's another discussion. The problem with your theory on how much better and cheaper Sprint is, is that quarter after quarter the numbers just aren't backing it up. VZW has the lowest churn of any carrier in the US. This has been true for years going all the way back to the Bell Atlantic Mobile days. That means that folks who subscribe to VZW service like it (a ...

In reading the response from Trevor83, it doesn't appear to me that he is really advocating one carrier over another, but simply outlining why VZW charges more for a particular card than say Sprint. I disagree with that general statement. It really depends on the timing of your statement. Both carriers networks are in constant flux. At any given time, one will have more coverage than the other. If you look 1.5 years ago when Rev 0 was deployed VZW had beaten Sprint to the punch by months because Sprint bet the farm on EVDV, which never materialized. So Sprint beat VZW to market with Rev A by 4-5 weeks. Given the minimal ...

OK...given the topic, neither of you are using meaningfull statistics. In order to truly know which carrier added more data customers you need to breakdown the overall gross adds, which is available but has not been cited. In order to know how many data subscribers each carrier grew, you need to break down the net adds. The net add numbers are typically more meaningfull. It doesn't matter how many subs you signed up if even more are deactivating. I think ...

Well, I was looking for articles that were comparing apples to apples. This person compared a Rev A network to a Rev 0 network. Of course Rev A will perform better but that's a meaningless comparison. Besides, the Sprint deployment is only marginally ahead of the VZW deployment and thus unlikely to provide them with any significant advantage in terms of attracting customers. He's right it is well documented. Every carriers quarterly results are posted in excruciating detail if you choose to wade through them. Headline reports typically center arount net adds since that's what most people understand. Sprint/Nextel took a bath with net adds the last three quarters. Seems to me Sprint is setting themselves apart with receding net adds, bad financials, high churn and poor customer service. I'll agree that Sprint has some innovative products, and their data network is pretty good too. I wouldn't go so far as to say they kick everyones butt though. OK, here goes.... Just because Cingular and T-Mobile choose to ignore the risks doesn't mean they're right and won't be held liable in the future. Take BCGi and RIM. Both chose to ignore patent infringement risks. Both were sued and lost. RIM nearly had to suspend it's service and wound up paying a huge settlement to NTP. BCGI was nearly put out of business. If that were the case, their ARPU would not be in the same ballpark as VZWs (it is). Last I heard, all companies are in business to make money and it's a significant investment to put platforms in place to offer data dervices like video, ringtones, ring back tones, mobile web, music etc....You know where I'm going.
