I believe the idea behind it is to encourage active lifestyle. So when swimming you can monitor your workout which like other watches do not require anything more than 50m.

Listen/read to the part where they explain why they moved away from the headset jack. I think it's forward thinking and a great step towards going wireless.
Not an Upsell
I don't believe Apple is trying to upsell but more like warning people about possible issues the superior finish might have if used roughly. I know many users who don't prefer a case to their iPhones and get it scratched over time. Scratches on a glossy black finish are more visible than matte or a different color finish. Should be common sense but it's nice that they are putting it out there
