Re: I can already see the lawsuit
I don't know. Not sure any of that is trademarked, especially seeing as how you have One Drive and Xbox One now.
Awesome
Good to hear they didn't completely leave us all in the dark. I use my N900 now (and plan to get the N9) but the 5800 is a great backup, and an even better GPS than the N900.
Tried to update but nothing yet.
Re: Is this a big deal?
I think they have that at least planned for their tablet products. Whether that comes to their phones I'm not so sure about.
Alien Dalvik promises to bring Android apps to a lot of platforms but the experience will probably not be as good as an app designed for the OS itself.
Somewhat of a fair review
Honestly, I'm more impressed with this review than your usual reviews of Symbian products (which tend to be harsher.)
I don't see how you say the homescreen is chaotic with different size widgets when that is what defines Android. Symbian had 6 same-size widgets at first and were castrated first, and then switch to different sizes for different apps and somehow it's bad?
That said, I urge you to find a decent Android phone for $70 either. Most are close to ...
Re: Pentaband 3G?
Yes. Unlock and ATT 3G will work.
When?
This doesn't really say *when* this is gonna debut. I was all excited to see what they had in store for Meego (and even S60 on my old 5800.)
Re: I guess if it worked for the Sham-WOW
Yes, software must be crap considering they overhauled the whole OS, of which 99% of people that seem to comment on Nokia have NEVER tried.
Re: I like that--
We are definitely spoiled. 8MP is nothing to sneer at in a phone, let alone a decent P&S.
This looks like a great phone. A cheaper alternative to the N8 that still provides nearly every advantage of it except HDMI out and the bigger camera sensor.
Re: Watch the Demo
Isn't this what Abbytranslate does already?
Not expecting much
I'm a huge Nokia fan but Ovi Suite is such a disappointment. It's not much better, if at all, than PC Suite and it still fails to work right with the N900.
They need to get with the program (no pun intended.)
Good news
Good to see that Meego is keeping the momentum going. Now if Nokia would just release an N9 already and get it really going.
Re: Nokia is Beating a Dead Horse...
IIRC, the sales numbers are through the roof on the N8. So much so in fact, that they had to delay release here in the US.
That said, Symbian is HUGE in Europe and elsewhere, and just because you can't effectively multitask doesn't mean that it reflects poorly on the OS. Why don't YOU kill some apps if you need to rather than have Android spoonfeed you with its autokill?
Also, the N900 IS a great phone. I'm a proud owner ...
Re: Cant Find it...
Either that or it's not available in the market. I would suggest going to Mozilla's site and downloading it from there.
Re: Now all thats left is...
Unlikely. What if your phone was stolen or somebody was messing with it and shut off your car while you were on the highway doing 60mph?
Good tech though. I think Ford is already profiting quite well off their brilliant embrace of new tech in their cars and trucks.
Nokia
But, but Nokia is dead, it...it can't be..
Re: Why?
Millions of others around the world might disagree with you on that one.
Re: MeeGo
I wasn't crazy about Android at first either (I mean, seriously) but look how that has taken off. The name means little if the experience is fantastic.
As for me, I might just wait a bit before trying out Meego. I don't think 1.1 is quite up to snuff yet for comfortable dual booting.
Re: NFC screams!
True. Even then, I would think that whatever account you link with it (Visa, etc.) would cover fraudulent purchases. It's probably just like paywave too where any purchase over $25 must have ID or a signature with it anyway.
Re: OVI maps
I have no idea if Google Maps will have voice guidance available for the N8 but have you tried downloading the maps and guidance onto your N95? (not sure if it's supported on that phone or not.) I did it with my 5800 and it was excellent. It never had any problems (because it didn't go online) and always had all the routes (update the maps every few months if need be, though I think once a year would ...
Re: Google Apps
Google APPS or Google MAPS?
You will surely be able to use G Maps (though I personally think Ovi Maps blow Google Maps out of the water).
As for the other Google mobile apps, I really don't know. I know there are a few that Symbian already had supported but not that many.
Re: Processor Speed
Is this sarcastic or is the rolling eyes a mistake?
Either way, the processor has an overall lower clock speed but the OS is also designed to operate more efficiently than others (such as Android, etc.) It also has a better GPU than most to handle graphics.
That together makes it hold its own. Buying a phone just because of a Snapdragon processor running at 1GHz is just playing into their hands (more is always better, etc.)
I wouldn't be surprised to ...
Good news
Good to see that S^3 is already getting off to a head start. I have pretty high hopes that Symbian will slowly right the ship and Meego will be the kicker that fully gets Nokia back in the fight in the smartphone wars.
Re: Still has potential
I'll have to try this out. To me, Firefox on Maemo is still a bit slow but overall not a bad design. I wonder how this beta compares.
Re: May as well put in a voice irritant
I agree that distracted driving is a problem, but there are always gonna be people who can't drive, with or without distractions. I don't see anybody clamoring for "no makeup application while driving" laws. Again, statistically speaking, it might result in fewer accidents per day but maybe more accidents per instance.
My whole point is like that of Trenen's (later post on down)- you can ban all you want and people are still going to get into accidents. We could ...
Re: May as well put in a voice irritant
Of course the answer is more govt regulation, instead of people just being smarter about what they're doing. It's simply Darwinism at work.
Re: This is a very nice move forward
Windmills work fine. The only real thing that might hinder this is that windmills generally need open spaces where wind blows freely, as opposed to the woods or areas next to cities that have obstacles all around them.
Yeah...
Let's just buy a monopolized microsd card. I would guess it should be a similar price to others but I somehow doubt it. Visa would've been better off just letting that tech out freely and encouraging all companies to just incorporate it in their micro sd lines. More widespread adoption while also keeping the prices low instead of letting one manufacturer choose the price point.
Very good...
This just makes me even more anxious for the N9. At the very least I'm hoping for PR 1.3 on the N900 for now.
Re: oh finally!!!
IIRC, they have designed the microsd SDXC standard to comply with UP TO 2TB, but I'm not sure that anybody has actually created a card that holds 2TB yet.
Re: looks nice, but not too different...
I think the C6 is pretty sharp. I don't like the bulbous designs so the C7 fails me on that point. The E7 also looks nice.
As for S60...I personally like it. I've had my 5800 for over a year now and have come to love S60. It may be plain and minimalistic at times (though the new FW helped by bringing some eye candy) but it just works, and on weak hardware at that. Maybe the learning curve is ...
Re: Can't the World Agree on 1 frequency that's not even out yet ??
Actually, this really isn't a big issue at all. The real crux of the problem today is that there are different technologies involved- CDMA, GSM, the standard that Japan or one of those Asian countries use, etc.
If all the carriers are going to LTE, it won't be that big of a deal to just have different frequencies added to the radios- ie. how Nokia has quad band GSM phones now.
So there really is no problem with what frequency each ...
Re: Bury Meego with it
Nice post. You said everything. Thanks for the thoughtful reply.
Re: Let's Hope This Issue Gets Resolved.
Well, they can resolve it pretty quickly by just returning the phone and getting something good.
It's amazing the number of problems that have crept up and the phone has been out a day.
Somehow, every other manufacturer has managed to get call quality right on almost all of their handsets (look at Nokia, when has anybody complained about a weak signal on one of them?)
But Apple manages to screw up the ONLY phone they have to get reception to work ...
Translation-
"Sorry guys, we f-ed up again, even after we knew the previous iPhones all had terrible reception too. Please buy one of our overpriced rubber cases or grip the phone with two fingers while avoiding the entire metal band. We thank you for buying our overrated and underwhelming product."
Re: Nokia sold under 100,000 n900 Maemo phone in 6months
Do you remember seeing them advertise the N900?
Neither do I. The phone was meant for a niche market-geeks- before going onto the mainstream. That's pretty good sales for a product that they never advertised at all.
Re: Bury Meego with it
Care to elaborate, because I've found several articles stating there is widespread support for this OS, not to mention being pushed by Intel itself.
http://www.marketwire.com/press-re lease/MeeGo-Developer-Community-Grows-as-Soft ware-Ecosystem-Support-Broadens-1146502.htm
Just because both Meego and Symbian don't have the huge footholds in the US like Android, RIM, and Apple doesn't mean they are out. The rest of the world still matters very much, and is right where Nokia is in first place.
Hmm
Better be feature complete pretty soon as the N8 is supposed to debut with it late August IIRC.
N9?
Hopefully this comes out on the N9. For being the flagship, you would hope it would have this. Sounds like a lot easier way to pay for things.
Similar to the iPhone....how?
Because it supports multitouch- which so many others do? Because it can swipe, like- you guessed it- so many other phones.
I swear these rags just put iPhone in there just to garner headlines. If it has the same features as every other phone, then I think it's safe to leave iPhone out of the article.
Re: 5gb?
Haha, I'm glad you noticed it too. I was glancing over and saw 5GB and just went ???
Definitely a typo.
