Yeah, small problem with your post, in that VZW and Sprint never had GSM networks. CDMA was a natural progression of analog cell networks into the digital world. GSM is arguably superior, but mostly that's because the European networks didn't care as much about backwards compatibility with analog equipment. I may still have an old dual band Verizon analog+digital phone. Also AT&T and T-Mo are both GSM, but phones from one don't work on the other without jumping though all ...

i can't speak to the droid sound, although mine hasn't rebooted in a few days. My solution to the no vibrate mode (it exists, there's just no easy way to access it; the D3 is no different) is to get Beautiful Widgets. Included in that set is the toggle widget, and one of the choices there is "vibrate" mode. There's also a silent toggle, so you can easily toggle silent or vibrate. To me, it's ...

When I use the testing menu to get there (as you describe) it says "CDMA auto (PRL)" as yours. The only change I made to mine was in the mobile network off of the setting menu. Setting that to CDMA only made a world of difference. Everything else is pretty much stock...you CAN change background data and some things like that. You CAN go in and add things to the auto-kill list in the moto ...

have you turned off global roaming? For me, with global roaming off, I can get close to 18 hours of moderate use, more than 12 of average use, and close to 8 of pretty heavy data use. Menu > settings > Wireless & Network > Mobile Network Settings > Network Mode. Set to CDMA only. Unless you do a lot of global roaming that should fix the problem. I suspect that it has something to do with ...

Android is not a very good operating system for people who think that ios "just works" Those people will, almost inevitably, find something to complain about with android. Because of the open-source development model, and low (as in nil) development cost (the android SDK is freely available for download, and you can be writing your own android programs in minutes, compared to spending hundreds of dollars for the ios SDK, annual license fees to apple, and even ...

Induction charging does not require physical contact to work. If you look at, for example, the palm pre, which has it built in, there's no "exposed metal contacts". Induction charging works on the principle of "induced" current; this is the same reason a transformer (think wall-wart power supply) works. Because the energy that can be induced drops off dramatically with distance, it effectively requires contact, but a magazine or other relatively thin insulator wouldn't appreciably affect performance.

You know, i keep hearing people say this, but the reality is that because of the inherently threaded architecture of Dalvik means that there shouldn't really need to be much "support" for two (or more) processors required from the OS at all. The OS already launches each application in its own virtual machine, so the practical mechanics of launching it on a different CPU shouldn't be difficult. If, as I suspect, these new generation of Android-optimized CPU's ...

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do in your first question. Sense is slightly different than "stock" android that I am used to, but in the full app drawer, there should be a "contacts" icon, that you can drop onto one of your screens. If you are looking to create an icon for a specific contact, so that you can, for example, send a text or call that contact without opening the phone app separately, ...

Any phone that is currently under NE2, you should get it. (They can't just arbitrarily change your contract, without letting you out, and they aren't going to let you out over a $50 credit). Any new phone you purchase, they aren't going to do an NE2 on. Although reading the fine print it says they won't "automatically add" the NE2 anymore, but it almost makes it sound like there is still that option, or perhaps they are ...

Within Handcent, you can choose any of the notifications on your phone, or any music/mp3 on your phone. You could even record your (or their) voice, and use that. You don't even have to make a ringtone of the song, although with most songs, it helps.

You shouldn't need a task killer on any current version (>2.1) android phone. ESPECIALLY if you are running sense (TB) or Blur (motorola, unless your hubby has a custom rom). The system is designed to automatically stop processes that it isn't using, and setting a task killer interferes with the mechanism that it uses to determine if a task is being used at a given time; in fact, because the task killer can kill tasks that shouldn't be killed, ...

When I went and played with it at the verizon store, we couldn't find any evidence of swype; although frankly that surprises me. However, it's probably worth pointing out that they keyboard was fast enough that I think swype would actually be slower; unless you can swype faster than you touch type, which I don't think most people can do.

You can try to find similar programs in the market. If you have the droidX dump, you can try to install the app that is associated with the widgets (that's why you get an "app not installed" error), however, there's a LOT of apps involved due to dependencies, and some of them you may not be able to put on without gaining superuser ("root") access. Sense provides a lot of similar widgets, but they ARE different (some would say ...

1) Yes; although I don't know for sure with the stock SMS client, it's relatively simple to install a new client, and there's several that have this functionality. Handcent SMS is an excellent, free program that allows all kinds of custom functions, including custom notification/rigntones based on who it's from, as well as different fonts, threading, iphone-style bubbles (which are customizeable for color, size, style, etc)... 2)Really really hard to quantify this one without you actually trying it. ...

there's sports, there's talk. In a lot of gyms, the TV audio is broadcast via FM radio, so you can listen to the tv if you like, without disturbing those who prefer to listen to music. BOTH OS and applications need to be written correctly to take full advantage, although it is possible to take SOME advantage if only ...

I think you missed the most important words in that email: "it's possible this...use may be available in some 3G areas..." In other words, it might work, but it might not, nobody is going to make any promises about whether it will or will not work in any given area, and even if it does, nobody is going to make any guarantees of the quality of the result. I've seen the leaks about simultaneous voice and data on 3G, but the leak also points out that it isn't up to quality standards, so it shouldn't be used as a selling point. I don't care who you work for. Unless Tbolt has 2 CDMA radios (which is possible, we already know there's 2 radios to begin with), then when you go into a 3G area, you're going to have a problem. End of story. Dual "intena" or not. (and we already knew it had a dual antenna, since CDMA and LTE are different frequencies)

Simultaneous voice and Data on 3G *IS* possible. I use it, for example, with skype, in my OG Droid. But the voice quality of skype isn't exactly something to write home about. I have read what is reportedly training material that mentions this, and it appears that this is exactly what they are doing: using VOIP (or VoRA, but effectively the same thing, the same underlying principle at least). This isn't new technology, and by verizon's own ...

Lets be fair, the free apps don't actually turn your phone into an FM radio, they merely allow you to tune into the radio station's stream. However, this does use data, as well as the phones radios, which causes heat and generally more battery drain than sitting there passively receiving. Also, if you are in a 3G area, you won't be able to continue listening if you get a phone call. To some people, having an FM radio ...

OK, lets put this into a little bit of perspective. First, you claim that DDR2 is "PC memory" while SDRAM is "bad". However, most moderns PCs are built with DDR3, not DDR2. And there are still a large number of PCs with SDRAM memory, pluggin away happily. DDR didn't really come into vogue until PCs crack the 1Ghz threshold, because up until about 1Ghz, regular SDRAM can keep up with the processor just fine. It isn't until slightly ...

I'd verify for sure the thing about the NE2. I know they aren't offering NE2 on NEW contracts, but that has been going on since like Feb 10. *your NE2 credit is part of your contract* so they can't just arbitrarily decide to not give it to you. That's one of the reasons for NEW contracts they won't be offering it anymore; but like I said, that applies to NEW contracts, not to your existing contract. I ...

Not to be argumentative, but you are confusing "resolution" with "dpi" or "pixel density". Resolution has nothing whatsoever to do with the screen size. I have a device with a 12" screen that has a resolution of 800x600. I also have a OG Droid, with a resolution of 480x854. If i tip it sideways, I can get most of the pixels of the 800x600 device to show on the 3" screen (resolution is effectively the ...

With an android phone, you won't lose your contacts, because they are backed up to your google account. VZW has a backup assistant program for most phones that will back up to their servers as well. If you sign up for online account access they waive the charge. Now that Backup Manager (or whatever they call it now) is available for android, if you put it on your old BREW phone, you should be able to restore your contacts ...

OK, that's about the most retarded thing I ever heard on phonescoop. the antenna has nothing to do with whether or not the phone can do simultaneous voice and data. It's the underlying technology, the way the cell network deal with data and voice. On GSM, a voice call is just another type of data, so even though the throughput of the data is reduced quite a bit, it doesn't have to drop the data. ...

On top of that, Android Central is claiming that the Sony Playstation Suite will be coming to Tegra devices (that's the Bionic, not the Tbolt), to include PS1 and at least some PS2 titles, plus new custom titles as well. Honestly, I am really really torn between the two phones, each has some really strong features. Re: 4G price plan

This is almost exactly the same as they were charging all along for 3G data for tablets, and for tethering (except on tethering, everything is slipped down a tier (none included, and peaks at 5GB for $80). And they were doing this right alongside the unlimited phone data. So I don't see anything to support the theory that just because they are charging that for tablet data they will charge that for phone data. Not saying ...

Pretty sure that's going to be exclusive to the Atrix, but I agree it would be sweet. If it catches on, however, I'd expect to see more units like it; I would imagine that it is at least possible to do something along those lines with the Bionic, but whether or not they actually WILL do that is something I certainly don't know, but I rather doubt. I get where you are coming from on that :) I seriously doubt they will make a cd burner for the tablets, especially the small format (7") tablets like the Galaxy Tab. You might get lucky and someone will build a bluetooth connected version though. However, I did hear the other day about something they are calling a "camera connection kit" (maybe specifically for ipad?) which is an SD card reader. Copy the files to the SD ...

It sounds to me like you are expecting an awful lot from a phone. Sounds like you need something a lot heavier duty for work stuff (like a one of those symbian or HP handheld PCs. The great thing about android is that if you don't like it, you can change it. long-press in a text input field, and it should pop up the "input method" dialog. Change it from "swype" to "android keyboard" and swype goes away. You can download other keyboards as well, you aren't stuck with just those. The "early" upgrade will expire, but then you'll qualify for "regular" upgrade, because it won't be "early" anymore. :) Regular upgrade is better than early upgrade, by the way, because with an early upgrade you have to pay the upgrade/activation fee ($36 right now), and with the regular upgrade you'll get you NE2, which is usually good for at least another $50. Of course, they are doing away with that, so your next upgrade you get the extra discount ...

I hadn't heard about 2.3 on the Bionic, but seriously, given motorola's history with pushing updates, I think we're gonna have to wait quite some time before Bionic's release, especially if it has whatever they are calling Blur these days; blur is notorious for causing delays to updates. Not that sense is that much better, but HTC's are pretty reliably hackable, and Bionic is supposed to ship with a locked bootloader.

It's worth pointing out that Android 2.2 is a LOT more efficient than 2.1 was, which I recall the Evo had at release (unless it released with 2.0, which was even worse) My OG Droid battery life almost doubled when I moved to 2.2. 2.3 is supposed to be another giant leap forward, although HTC is notoriously slow on those upgrades because of having to update Sense.
