Excellent analysis. It's clear that Stephenson is trying to poison the well for this deal. He, of course, ignores one very important distinction: a combined T and T-mo would have had a huge market share. A combined S and T-mo would not. Even if regulators are not excited about the deal, they have to have solid reasons to object. The concept that a combined S and T-mo would monopolize much of anything is farfetched.

The map was extremely misleading. It compared Verizon's EVDO (3G) to AT&T's HSPA (3.5G). If they wanted to be honest, which of course they didn't, they'd compare EVDO to UMTS coverage, which was comparable at the time. Maybe that's why AT&T has been so slow with LTE. The last time they deployed a new technology, it gave their competitors and ad campaign.

Historically, AT&T has been great in DFW. They inherited the Southwestern Bell infrastructure and 900MHz spectrum. Lately, things have not been as good. For now, I'm assuming the problems are related to their scramble to get LTE up and running.

The upgrade theory seems most plausible. My phone is only a couple of months old and the battery is fine. I even rebooted, but it dropped again. The problem call was a 2am, so it is not inconceivable that they scheduled some work at that time to avoid as many disruptions as possible. OTOH, that doesn't explain the drop during the day. However, that was driving on the freeway, which naturally increases the chance ...

I live in Dallas. The coverage with AT&T has always been great with a dropped call maybe every other month at most. Now it happens much more regularly. I had a late night conference call (I work for a European company) where the call dropped seven times, and I was not moving the entire time. Does anyone know if there are some major system changes? I have a Blackberry 9700. :paranoid:

I can't confirm it, but I think that AT&T is desperately working to get LTE installed. I'm guessing that these short problems are part of the process of installation. I had a late night conference call last Thursday (actually 2am Friday). The call dropped at least six times. I then rebooted and it did it again. After that, it held the call. This was in the DFW area (Fairview, near the intersection of ...

I am not an AT&T employee and have no inside knowledge. However, the 9100 is supposed to be out in May and has AT&T's 3G frequencies. It may go to Rogers in Canada first, but it won't be much past May until AT&T has it, IMHO.

The only question is will the costs be the lost tax break or the costs of closing down their retiree drug benefit and dumping their retiree drug costs on Medicare. The tax break was an incentive for companies to not do just that. Now they have no incentive not to dump them. Congratulations, Obumble. You've saved the country ...

I did some digging. Smartphone is apparently a front for PalmSource (now a sub of ACCESS, a Japanese company), the OS company that Palm recently spun out. This has become a common technique for plaintiffs who want to stay in the EDTex: form a corporation in the EDTex (in this case in Frisco) and transfer the patents to the front.

Congratulations, you make the Madmen look ethical. 90% of the Verizon "3G" coverage is much slower than any version of UMTS and about the same speed as EDGE, which is universal on AT&T's network. The only difference is that AT&T doesn't try to pull semantic bullshit to claim fairly slow service is 3G.

The problem is that you have to tell everyone what your new local number is. Or, you can forward your U.S. number to your local number, but then you get socked for an international call anyway. I guess the only way to deal with this is leave a voicemail answer message telling what your local number is. One question, do you tend to end up with a large collection of pre-paid SIMs?

If you have a Bold and want 3G, you're only choice is AT&T. Due to our crowded airwaves, T-Mobile got stuck with 1700MHz for 3G. Your phone will do 850/1900/2100.

Write down the IMEI for your phones and call customer care to make sure AT&T entered them correctly. (Get a magnifying glass to get the IMEI for the iPhone. It's on the edge of the SIM cradle.) I can't say I understand completely, but apparently the IMEI is very important for how the network manages your phone.

This is a nice explanation. There's one aspect to add, though. Because EVDO was added in addition to Verizon's CDMA voice network and did not replace it, Verizon's voice network was never disrupted by the transition to EVDO. The transition from GSM to WCDMA was more difficult for AT&T. A 2G (GSM) cell and a 3G (WCDMA) cell use very different modulation. A 3G cell doesn't connect to a 2G device (I'm pretty sure), nor vice ...

The Fuze is great. Good call quality and you can make things just about as loud as you want. One caveat, it is a phone for phone gearheads. If you want a phone that "just works," this is not the phone for you. If you love tweaking your phone to suit your tastes, needs, or just to have fun tweaking, this is a great phone.
