Verizon Network
Do any of Tracfone's phones work on Verizon's network? If so, which ones?
Thanks!
Re: Smartphone with best signal capability
Actually I used Blackberry's for about 12 years (I miss my RIM 950!) before I switched to Android. I was actually planning to move to an iPhone soon.
Once I went to Android I was hooked on the speed of the Browser and the apps. I actually have an FRU Blackberry Bold sitting in my desk and it has OS 6.x on it. Even with 6, web speed is painfully slow compared to the Android device.
Re: Smartphone with best signal capability
Your advice is solid and makes sense. That said, when I enter in my address to other carriers coverage tool, I am not finding any overwhelming replacements, and no, I don't live in Podunk but it does feel that way some times.
Smartphone with best signal capability
After 13+ years with Verizon it appears as though I have to select another carrier.
They made changes to the cell site near my house at the end of March and I am now unable to reliably use my phone in my house, even with using one of their femtocell wireless extender devices.
VZW informed me yesterday that my house is now considered in a fringe/poor coverage area which is kinda funny as I am line of sight to the cell ...
Re: Any new Blackberry phones coming to Verizon?
For me, I have gotten use to no keyboard though honestly some times it would be handy. Given my age, so-so eye sight and small-fat fingers (ladies, excited yet?...LOL) I am surprised that I do as well without a keyboard as I do, though a bigger screen would be welcome.
Re: Any new Blackberry phones coming to Verizon?
Is Blackberry still in business?
Sorry, I know they are :) I made the move away from them after 12+ years on a Blackberry, their devices & OS seem so ancient and outdated
Re: concern is legitimate
I switched to Mac 8 years ago...never looked back ;-)
Re: concern is legitimate
I still am using my Android and I also understand that any device I use is vulnerable. Maybe this is why I am not in the norm these days and still use 4k+ minutes of talk time every month ;-)
Re: concern is legitimate
Listen, I may be mistaken in my "concern" as my profession is not network or any other type of security.
One of my apprehensions about Android, and again I can be mistaken is that there doesn't seem to be a universal OS for Android. Apple, like them or not has a uniform OS (unless you hack it) on their devices. Same with Blackberry.
Maybe having different versions of Android OS are no big thing and its an needless worry ...
Re: concern is legitimate
Sorry, just sharing my honest feelings. I am not a security specialist, nor do I pretend to understand all of the ramifications. That said, even though I don't (nor would I) use mobile banking and such, I still have my concerns.
concern is legitimate
I switched from Blackberry to an Android based device 3 months ago. I switched for most of the same reasons many people do, and honestly, I have little regret. That said, after using Blackberry for 12+ years, my concern was/is security.
I realize that for now this is limited to China and is not impacting the USA. I also get that the Android Market is not impacted by this, again, at least for now.
This all said, I do believe that ...
Re: It's not! It's just a marketing scheme to brainwash people!
@Jayshmay, or old farts like me who love Apple products, still stay with Verizon because of the current network superiority, and don't necessarily want "individuality" but be able to make calls, access our apps, and utilize other typical smart phone features with ease. Yes, if VZW does offer an iPhone, I will dump my Blackberry and get one even though I am concerned about the strain a VZW iPhone will put on their network.
Re: wow
I see, and get your point, but to classify this as a "great" product is a little misleading based on my own experience.
I bought one of these devices a few months ago as I had dead-spots in my house (most specifically the basement) and I will say that in the basement, it does definitely help and I no longer experience phone calls going right to voice mail. That said, in the rest of the house, where there is ...
Re: This law will last unti....
Amen! NIMBY's don't want cell sites until they, their children, or other family are in emergency and can't use their telephone.
Re: Data dumb question
@DSFB407, to your point, in addition to this forum, I have literally engaged everyone with an iPhone on the streets of NYC that would talk to me over the last few days.
Unscientific of course, but what I found is about what you might suspect; 50% are happy and 50% are not. The big qualifier here though is how people use their devices. In other words many of the people I spoke with rarely use their device for voice calls ...
Re: Data dumb question
Though thus far the majority seems to disagree with you @dsfb407, I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and offer your feedback.
Re: Data dumb question
Thanks very much!
Re: Data dumb question
As far as WiFi and AT&T in NYC @ Anxiovert, yet another dumb question from me :)
Is the WiFi "open" for AT&T subscribers? In other words when I am in the city I see tons of WiFi options on my iPod Touch, but, its all locked down.
Thanks,
Scott
Re: Data dumb question
Thanks very much @anxiovert and @sigma1570 for the feedback and help!
Data dumb question
As much as I love Verizon Wireless, and I do, I am inching ever so closer to switching to AT&T strictly for the iPhone. This scares me on many fronts, not least of which is that 50% of the time I am in NYC, but, that's another story.
My concern today is data. With AT&T not offering unlimited data plans anymore, my dumb question is should I be concerned about a plan with a 2GB limitation?
My son and I are ...
Re: What happened to you RIM?
I tried a Android based device this week. It caused me huge problems. In all fairness, I think that part of the problem was my fault in that I got a low end Android device.
This said I really do hope that VZW does get the iPhone someday, and hopefully sooner than later. My experience with the iPod Touch has been awesome.
For now, I guess I am stuck with the dumbest of the available smartphones :/
Re: Verizon Wireless Network Extender
Just a quick update. I did buy the extender and it has made a HUGE improvement in the basement! I do hear the delay and echo that was mentioned in one of the replies. Its bearable, but I agree, it is annoying.
Thanks again to everyone for the feedback and info!
Re: Verizon Wireless Network Extender
Thanks very much @cwcanty
Re: Verizon Wireless Network Extender
Thanks to all for the replies!
As for the basement, this "problem" is relatively new. In other words we have passable service in the basement until recently.
Regarding the cell tower, we are about a mile from VZW's nearest cell site. I have a feeling that they re-calibrated it recently, hence, my problem.
As for plugging directly into DSL, actually, my office is down there which is where the cable modem is, as well as the 4 port wired/wireless router.
Verizon Wireless Network Extender
Do you use, or have you used Verizon Wireless's Network Extender? If so, would you please share your experience with me.
I am having issues in my basement with voice and am contemplating purchasing this item. None of our VZW devices (Blackberry Bold, Blackberry Tour, LG-Env2, LG5400, etc.) are able to receive voice calls in the basement.
If I do buy the Network Extender, it would be placed in the basement.
Thanks for any and all feedback!
BB Browser Issue
I just received the 9650 Bold and I am getting this message on MANY web pages.
"http error: 413 request entity too large"
Have you experienced this? If so, any work-arounds found?
I also use Bolt and don't have issues with that one, except I can't seem to make it my default browser.
Re: SOS
My .02 as a Blackberry user of 10+ years, and I have NO experience with the 9650.
Sadly I have seen a steady decline from RIM in the Blackberry line. This applies to design and performance.
As for design, as an example, on the Tour, what genius figured out where to put the charging port where it is? Could it be in a worse place? I don't think so.
Regarding performance, I have been through 5 FRU Tour models so far. Before ...
Re: finally
Can't wait for the Verizon Wireless iPhone! After 10 years of Blackberry and watching them decline over the years, the time to switch has come!
What happened to you RIM?
I have been a Blackberry user for over a decade. My original device was a RIM 850. Slowly but surely I have seen the quality of Blackberry devices decline ever since then.
My current model (Tour 9630) is awful. I am awaiting my third replacement.
I post this not necessarily seeking a response but more of an open question to RIM: What happened to you? Quality control has gone to hell. Design, once cutting edge and well thought out is ...
Re: BB Tour Questions?
Currently I use the 9630 (Tour). I am also using an iPod Touch on WiFi networks whenever and wherever possible.
As for transition, based on my experience with iPod Touch, when VZW gets the iPhone, I am confident that I will have no issue making the move.
Re: BB Tour Questions?
The Tour 1(?) is an awful device. This coming from someone who has used Blackberry's for 11 years or so.
My issue with the Tour is the placement of the charging port, the trackball is a mess, the web browser is awful and slow, battery life stinks, frequent device crashes, and the voice quality is poor.
I have seen a definite decline in Blackberry's over the last 2 to 3 years. I miss my old 850 more and more.
Maybe the ...
If true, good news
I am a Verizon Wireless customer and I sincerely hope that AT&T is successful in NYC and elsewhere.
The simple truth is that as AT&T gets stronger, it forces VZW and other carriers to ratchet up their game and offerings.
Re: ARG!
Disclosure: I am on Verizon with a Blackberry, but, I have tremendous iPhone envy :-)
I gotta tell you, when I read the NY Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/technology /companies/10iphone.html?_r=1) I thought that it was a joke or a spoof by someone like the Onion.
If this wasn't so damn sad, it would almost be funny....
Verizon, tMobile, Sprint, etc. need not do any negative AT&T ads as they are dooming themselves.
Re: Anyone Else Willing to Say?
Data and voice at the same time would be GREAT! Often I am on the phone with someone when they send me a file, email, etc. while we are on the phone. I end up hanging up, looking at the file and then calling back. Very annoying.
This is one reason btw that I use to carry two phones (Blackberry and standard phone) up until 6 months ago or so. Ultimately I may go back to carry a desperate ...
Re: email on a regular phone
Thanks! I very much appreciate the reply and feedback.
email on a regular phone
I am growing more and more unhappy with each new Blackberry that RIM offers.
The latest one (Tour) is been a huge disappointment for me.
I am wondering if any of you has used, or does use a "traditional" phone that has email capability (i.e. LG EnV 3) and if so, what has your experience been?
Thanks...Scott
Re: space bar
Great tip, thank you! I will look for those other tips about the Bold.
Re: Network expander?
Thanks for the feedback! I agree, the Curve had much better reception. I though about going back, and still may.

Re: Network expander?
Thanks very much! I will do it this weekend!
Re: Network expander?
Thanks very much! Yes, my issue is voice related. The Curve worked great in my house, the Tour, not so much.
