Looks like there's definitely models in the works: The Motorola XT300 has been making appearances recently: http://www.phonedog.com/2010/08/ 30/motorola-xt300-portrait-slider-with-androi d-photos-leak-again/ http://www.itechnews.ne t/2010/08/31/motorola-xt300-android-qwerty-sl ider-videos/ Then there's the Alcatel OT-980: http://www.intomobile.com/2010/02/01 /pre-esque-slider-from-alcatel-rocks-android/ And this Motorola phone might be a per-cursor to the XT300: http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/24/mo torolas-android-powered-heron-sawgrass-do/

Jealous of the form factor
Sep 15, 2010, 11:52 AM
in the BlackBerry Torch 9800 forum

I love the overall form of the device. It seems to me a vertical slider is the way to go - all the screen real estate of keyboardless phone and the one-handed typing ability of a Blackberry or Treo. Out of the dozens of identical looking Android devices out there you'd think someone would have made an Android in this shape by now.

Re: Any Android phones with "one handed" keyboard?

in the Android forum

Thanks for the reply Fireball :-) That should work, but I've been doing that on my Windows phone these last several months hoping I could get used to an on screen keyboard, but it drives me nuts: I have to look at the keyboard in order to type on it (no way to "touch type" on a "touch screen" since it all feels the same). I'll get to the end of a sentence and look up at what I've typed ...

Any Android phones with "one handed" keyboard?
Jun 24, 2010, 11:41 AM
in the Android forum

Used the Phone Finder and haven't been able to find one, but want to make sure: Are there any Android phones that have a keyboard you can use with 1 hand, like Treos and Blackberries do? One of the things I really miss about my PalmOS Treo was the ability to type on it one handed. The phone I use now (a Windows mobile 6.1 one) has a slide out keyboard that I thought I'd like better, but so often I ...

Somehow that response seems a little condescending and heading off topic, but I'll respond anyway. A) I got my PDA phone independently and it has no ties to any phone company B) I'd like to pay to use their network for voice, I don't want to use their network for data. C) Having to deal with customers and their bills is something all utility companies must do. Just because someone has a caller-id capable phone doesn't mean they have to pay for ...

Land line phone companies don't know what kind of phone systems their customers have (though this wasn't always the case) and ISPs don't know what kind of computer systems their customers have. It's frusterating that mobile phone service providers are so control-oriented.

What do the phone companies know, really?
Nov 17, 2009, 1:57 PM

Verizon at least seems very interested in the make and model of my mobile phone. They change their billing options depending on which phone I use. I have a PDA phone which I'd like to use as a PDA and as a phone and never send any data traffic through their network, yet they are insistent that I pay for data service I don't intend to use. What can they tell about my phone exactly? Is it some part of the CDMA protocol? Do ...

That's already in the Phone Finder, but I overlooked it! It's there as "TV Output" and the answer to my question is apparently all of these phones! https://www.phonescoop.com/phones/ finder_results.php?m=e&w=s&f68r=r I didn't know the iPhone had TV out. I don't think I could live with a buttonless phone, but that's interesting.

I've read about some phones coming with video out these days. Specifically some phones from i-Mate. Have any other phones got that feature? I'd love to see it added to the Phone Finder :-)

Add Linux to the Phone Finder?
Jan 18, 2007, 1:18 PM
in the General forum

There seems to be a couple new Linux phones at CES this year and that got me looking for other Linux phones. I guess saying a phone is a "Linux phone" doesn't mean as much as one of the other real platforms like Palm and Symbian, but it does at least imply some things about the phone. Could "Linux" be added to the "Platform / OS" area in the Phone Finder? It'd be nice if there was an "other" option ...

I'd be much more interested in the E61. Windows Mobile seems horribly unstable. Just look at the problems people are having with the Treo 700w for just one example: https://www.phonescoop.com/phones/p _forum.php?p=811 Personally, having my phone "crash" is extremely high on my "not to do" list.

Spellcheck gone?
Jan 12, 2005, 3:32 AM
in the phonescoop.com forum

I saw last time I posted a few days/weeks ago that the spellcheck was acting pretty strange - it said every word in my entire post was misspelled etc for some odd abbreviation. I know Rich said he was going to work on the spellcheck before to make it recognize words like "PhoneScoop" and other common words that haven't made it into Merriam-Webster's yet. I wonder if the spellcheck's gone for good or just disabled for the moment? It's no biggie at ...

Any obvious advantages over the "Blue Angel"? (Siemens SX66, etc, etc, etc)
Jan 12, 2005, 3:28 AM
in the Article: BenQ Rolls Out Windows Mobile PDA Phone forum

Any obvious advantages/disadvantages over the existing "Blue Angel" (which is really designed by HTC, but distrubited under at least 300 different names and makers)? I havn't tried compared dimensions & weight or claimed battery life. Bluetooth version may be different too and of course CPU & memories. But the core functionality seems the same to me...

As if this phone doesn't do enough as it is... But does anyone know how powerful the infrared port is? Can it function with the range of a typical TV remote so that it can take advantage of the TV/VCR/etc remote software that's available for PocketPC? Or is it "standard IR" meaning it has a range of about 2 feet and while it COULD run the software to function as a TV remote, if you have to be 2 feet away, what's ...

Ha! Dropping the phone "feature" would be a rather bold maneuver for a wireless phone carrier! I suppose the camera is physically not there? It would look so bad if the camera was visible on the device, but disabled through software. And what a weird feature to disable! Are they trying to save $? The way cameras are showing up on every phone out there these days, you'd think they were cheap enough to make no difference to the seller. Maybe they're just targeting those folks ...

In what ways are Cingular's models crippled?
Dec 13, 2004, 2:18 PM

The phone sure is on Cingular's website: http://onlinestoref.cingular.com/ webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ES_PROD_PHONE_DETAI LS.jsp?phoneid=496253&storeId=10851&catalogId =10851&langId=-1&storeAlias=albalb&svcAreaId= SBC&subOrderId=1&isPostpaid=true&bogoSubOrder Id=0&pageFrom=ES_PHONES I entered the zipcode "12345" to get to that page. So apparently Cingular is one of those many-faced companies who treat people differently depending on where their bill address is. So your mileage may vary :-/ Anyway, there's no mention of a camera on that page. Are there any other features that aren't implemented on Cingular's model? I suppose of course that any of these bought through Cingular will be locked and you couldn't transfer service ...

Well, since it's on my mind anyway, the Motorola MPx or MPx-300 (whichever it really is) which was (apparently) just released in Europe and is expected in the US the first half of 2005, is one. I'm really attracted to it because it has that 802.11b WiFi built into it. That and the clamshell design and the keyboard. There must be a ton of really neat things to be done with a device that size that can get it's own IP# without ...

eBay phones & gotchas
Dec 11, 2004, 12:50 AM

There always seems to be that "new super great phone" that's ALMOST released, but isn't quite out yet. I took a peak on eBay for one of these phones - one that's supposed to come out in Europe this month and the US by mid next year. (the Motorola MPx, or as the eBay people seem to call it, the MPx-300. I guess it was released in Europe under that name?). Anyway, some of these eBay auctions strongly reek of "too good ...

Here's on example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl l?ViewItem&category=64355&item=5736642302&rd= 1 What's the deal exactly? Are GSM phones really so simple that you can pull any ol' GSM phone from anywhere, switch that SIM chip out and you've got a working phone in the US? I know I've asked this before and been told "Yes", but it just so feels like there should be a catch. Maybe I'll search thru the "Techs & Trends" forum and maybe ask ...

The Kyocera Koi KX2? It's a tiny bit bigger than the Audiovox 8910 (according to the specs anyway. Do these things measure with or without the antenna anyway?) which is what they're pushing at my local Verizon store: Koi: 3.94" x 1.97" x 0.98" 8910: 3.90" x 1.80" x 0.90" And the Koi claims to have less battery life too. But then these claims aren't always reality ;-) And of course Kyocera's not announced plans to leave the market either. I'm going to ...

I've considered it, but I've got so little confidence in Microsoft that I don't think I will. Just the thought of my phone being hacked into by some automated worm-robot-program disgusts me. I've had enough headaches rebuilding Windows boxes. I'd rather not have to worry about running firewalls on my phone and licensing anti-virus software for it and keeping all of that updated. At this point I'm probably going to go with a "dumbphone" under Verizon. I've went from a huge laundry list of ...

Re: Samsung SCH-A650 vs. Audiovox CDM-8600: which better?
Dec 4, 2004, 5:39 PM
in the Audiovox CDM-8600 forum

That's a question I'd love to see an answer to. My situation's similar to yours ... except I havn't bought a tihng yet :-) This phone's the smallest tri-band Verizon phone with speakerphone and that makes it tempting. And a friend just got the SCH-A650 last week. (He has no complaints yet, but hey, he's in Atlanta, GA. You're going to get service there even if you're only using tooth fillings and an aluminum beanie!) Well worded post, btw :-)

I agree - it's *amazing* that phone that can't deal with MP3s could deal with one with just a changed extension. MP3 and MIDI are about as far apart as you can go encoding wise! It's like speaking Chinese or speaking C++; the "languages" don't even work at the same level.

Of course all kinds of things can influence battery time. But those things shouldn't be affecting the numbers you see listed as "talk time" and "standby time". There SHOULD be some standardized tests for those things, else why bother reporting the numbers at all? "My car gets like 9 million miles to the gallon! ... As long as it's just idling and in free fall. On Jupiter. With a down draft of 35mph. And it's pointed down." ;-)

This is exactly what Phonescoop is perfect for. This so looks like the perfect phone on paper. It has every major feature I'm looking for. Not only that, it's that ONLY phone in production that has every major feature I'm looking for. But then you glance in the forums and there's the real measure of the phone. It's a lemon. Sigh. Great! Buying a cell phone is complete voodoo! No one's going to the sickeningly intense lengths to measure phones' reception (if they are, they aren't publishing it) and something as easily measurable as battery life is being measured by marketers apparently wearing beer-goggles. Might as well just go w/ whatever free phone the yahoos in the store at the strip mall are handing out. :-/ -- O "Dude, are you being sarcastic?" "Dude, I don't even know anymore."

Could Rich or someone add Linux to the Platform/OS section of the 3 Phone Finders? On a total other side note, I kinda like the "Check Spelling" feature for posting.
