WAP and Laptop Tethering Explained

WAP (wireless application protocol) is an internet protocol designed for mobile devices. Cell phones use a special type of browser (typically made by Openwave) that access WAP pages. WAP is a condensed version of the standard internet made to fit on a much smaller screen. WAP pages typically have very few graphics and are mostly all text. Sports, weather, and news headlines lend themselves very well to WAP. Most of the big web sites are WAP enabled – meaning, ...

Once again, I haven't set up free WAP on my 8940 yet as I am still using my free 2 months vcast. I have set up free WAP on my wifes LG-VX-4500 and it worked great. The below tread from Howard's Forum suggests that there may be difficulties in setting up free WAP on Audiovox phones. I am assuming I can make it work but until I give it a try it on my Audiovox 8940 I can't claim ...

Re: Using phone as modem

I read that some guy was connected to his laptop using his phone as a modem and thought he was surfing for free. Unfortunately Verizon was able to zero in on his higher than average bandwidth and download volume and stuck him with a extra $90 bill.

I found the browser code by reading forums on older Audiovox phones. I should post a short caveat - I am still using my 2 months free V-Cast so I haven't made any changes to my phone yet. I am not quite sure of the difference between the three up-links. Presumably if your browser can't connect at one up-link then it will move on to the next and try that. Typically when you find a free WAP gateway address ...

8940 Browser Options Code!

If you want to change your browser options on your 8940 to be a able to get free WAP internet here is the access code: press ##BROWSER then press the "end call button" From there you can change your default homepage, Gateway address and port settings. With a lot of hard work searching the web you will eventually find a working free WAP gateway address and port. I would recomnend changing your homepage to something other than the Verizon homepage as they want ...

You need to have or to set up a free Yahoo email account. Then you need to join the CDM8900 yahoo group. Below is a link to group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vzw_c dm8900/ Once in the group go to the files section. Scroll down and you will find the drivers there. Loading the drivers is a slightly long process. When it asks for the driver location point back to the files you downloaded. It will keep asking you if you want to install them. It ...

Using QPST put your Sound files (.mid files) into the User/sound/ringer folder on your phone. Then on your phone under Settings/Sounds/Ringer Type/Ringer you will see the built in "music bells". Click the right joy stick button to get to "Downloads" and you will see your sound files.

Ok, everybody take a deep breath and relax. I bought this phone last night. I haven't purchased a mini sd card yet, but reading the manual it clearly states that you can move pictures and video from the camera’s sd card to your PC. What you can't do is move ring-tones and games on to the sd card. Verizon wants you to buy these on their “Get It Now” service. Also if someone sends you a picture you can't move ...

Use AT&T Version of Phone to Access the Web with Cingular?
Nov 23, 2004, 2:55 PM
in the Audiovox SMT 5600 / SPV C500 (HTC Typhoon) forum

I am told by Cingular that this phone will work fine with one of their plans (once it is unlocked) but you will not be able to use it on for the internet. Has anyone bought this phone without an AT&T plan, migrated to a Cingular plan and then successfully used it to surf the web? Are there particular settings that you need to enter into the phone to make it happen?

55 seconds to startup???? That is a crazy amount of time!!!!! 8O My Desktop computer boots up in half that time. Is this typical for smart phones? It seems ridiculous!!! Is it really just the start up screens that are slowing it down? Has anyone been able to successfully disable the startup screens? If so how long does it take to startup then? Also what kind of battery life should one expect to get if the phone is ...

I called several former AT&T stores in Southern California. All of them were clueless. I also emailed Audiovox directly. They also seemed to be unaware of any plans by Cingular to offer the SMT5600. Below is the email conversation. "I have heard that Audiovox may be releasing an updated version of the SMT 5600 (formerly AT&T) for the Cingular network. If this is the case what is the estimated time frame for when Cingular customers would have access to these ...

I called a over a dozen Cingular stores here in Southern California. Every single one of them was clueless that Cingular might be releaseing their own version of the Audiovox SMT 5600. In fact they were adamant that this was NOT going to happen. Perhaps Cingular is rolling out this promotion in the mid-west first - or perhaps Cingular is just running around with its head up its ass.

You make a good point. The Treo seems a lot smaller than many of the Pocket PC phones on the market. I think this is because the cross section the Treo is very round across the back side. This dramatically cuts down the total girth of the phone. Many of the pocket PCs are much more rectangular and feel like a little brick. It is one of those characteristics that you can't really assess until you have the actual ...

I hate carrying around a brick in my pocket. Why do they make these things so dam big? I am waiting for the HTC Magician. I think that is the form factor of the future. Should fit perfectly in my pocket. I can live without Wi-Fi.

Just got of the phone with a Cingular rep who said that the Audiovox SMT 5600 is programmed to be used with AT&T's M-mode for data, and that this would make it incompatible with the Cingular's data network. Hence you could unlock this phone and use it as a phone on Cingular, but you may have problems with data. I am taking this with a grain of salt because every time I speak with a new rep at ...
