While Verizon and at&t continue to gobble up spectrum from smaller and/or now defunct regional players with the full blessing of the FCC, the possible Sprint/T-Mobile merger is getting the cold shoulder. Seems to point to the possibility the FCC would rather only have a duopoly instead of 4 carriers, doesn't it?
I think you are mislead about current totals of specturm each carrier posses. T-Mobile has MetroPCS's specturm now and Sprint-Nextel has Clearwire. When that is added to ...

Yes! I love that Idea - Spectrum is appointed or allotted, or auctioned based on your actual customer base for any given area, and for ACTUAL needs only.
If they could somehow test and for certain determine - This many Mhz serves this many people, then your idea with this system would probably be best. I mean right now the big issue is wasted spectrum.
At&t has tonnes of 2.3Ghz spectrum ( I think that's the ...

NYC's subway system was inaugurated on October 27, 1904. DC's WMATA Metro is only 36. It is safe to say that the older system could not anticipate the coming technological advances.

We finally have LTE and it's lightening fast here. Our HSPA signal is amazing here too so for me to say the difference is really noticeable is something. Most thought it wouldn't be too much faster than HSPA, anyway although it may be fast we cannot talk and surf the web using it like HSPA. I don't like that. Anyone else feeling the same way?
You can continue to talk and surf simultaneously. Voice is handled over the HSPA ...

How often do people need to talk and surf at the same time? I've had an Incredible 2 on Verizon for over a year and I can't think of a single situation where I needed to do this. I'm sure some people sometimes need it, but is this considered a primary feature that people would switch carriers for?

If AT&T were to aquire the lower A and B blocks of the 700MHz spectrum they would not put it to use within 60 days.
They would make some lame operations excuse as to why it could not be utilized at this time and keep it inactive under their control simply to keep it out of the hands of any potential competition.
Is this an IQ test? Are we really supposed to not only ignore AT&T's ...

Why are people saying the GPS industry is infringing on the LS spectrum?
They aren't.
The problem is the FCC has kept terrestrial use of adjacent spectrum for the GPS sats vacant to keep any bleed from affecting GPS.
LS thought they could bully their way into that area with terrestrial transmitters and it didn't work.
The GPS sats are owned and operated by the United States Air Force and their signals do not interfere with the LS spectrum.
For LS to use ...

The FCC did not give them the spectrum for terrestrial-only service. Lightsquared KNOWINGLY bought spectrum meant for sat service, knowing it was NOT allowed for terrestrial only service. The FCC did NOTHING wrong. The FCC gave them the chance to see if they can make it work and they couldn't and they denied them.
They BOUGHT spectrum. The only issue here is that this PURCHASED spectrum has some illegal users on the purchased frequencies.

Despite this record of job destruction, Sprint wants to get credit for a pledge to bring a mere 600 offshored jobs back to the United States."

Sprint is the most vocal Carrier but has anybody really looked at Sprint?
They directly employ about 40,000. However, the numbers they outsource are hidden. Why is that?

2700 of those jobs were slated to be cut but Cingular had them delay it until the acquisition was complete.

I agree. Think objectively. So ATT is basically upset that they weren't allowed to fire these people themselves.
Let's be real here. If ATT would have bought Tmobile, they would have only postponed this layoff and ATT's layoff numbers would probably be higher as they have shed many more jobs than this during previous buyout/merger processes.
The FCC cited this as one of the reasons that ATT should not buy Tmobile. Because the layoffs would be greater than if ...

I thought that at&t had already bought Cellular One actually....or at least when I was an at&t employee there was a whole section of company policy telling us what to do with a 'former Dobson Communications or Cellular One customer'.
In 1977, the American Radio Telephone Service and Motorola formed Cellular One to offer service to the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., area. From there through acquisitions, the name bounced to around 16 different owners to its current owners Trilogy Partners.

Not a claim. A fact. The FCC strictly monitors the frequencies that cell phones use but for some reason, the strict monitoring did not happen for the GPS industry. The fault is with both, the GPS manufacturers and the FCC. The FCC sold something to a company knowing the frequencies sold had activity on it. The real shame is that the FCC talks about acting responsibly and fairness but this blunder gives ...

Re: Apathy...
The most secure jobs in a merger is the call center and sales staff (with the new at&t, formerly Cingular at least). Next is Network Ops. When Cingular bought failing AT&T and called it a merger, everyone was offered a new spot in the new at&t. About 87% of employees remained. The others moved on to new jobs. Former CEO Stan Sigman was an awesome guy with great ethics. That spirit lives on in Ralph De La Vega. Cingular ...
