Sadly I have now proved you right by actually trying. My bad. Back goes the Blackjack. In comes the Pearl.

I got a Blackjack to try just an hour ago. The Microsoft web site says verbatim: "Voice Command for Windows Mobile powered Pocket PC and Pocket PC Phone Edition* is designed to make your mobile experience awesome! Take a tour and find out more." (the * means they need version 2003 or later.) Will keep this thread apprised of my progress.

Third party WM5?

It's probably too early to know, but at least in theory one should be able to purchase Microsoft's or another package that runs on WM5. I guess I will wait to see what others say.

This would be my first LG phone, so I don't know what software that would be. Can you point me to it? Also, is the charger proprietary or the mini-USB? Thanks for the quick reply Seedub.

Thanks. I could say a long name and get it perfect and then it wouldn't hear my YES either. Comical. But it works great for me overall.

Amen. Weird quirk that drives me nuts. I use the message key usually. If you press and hold the message key, the screen will go dark just so you can have the other problem again!

Consider www.rivetnow.com if you don't want the bulk of a case. It is a simple system that adds no bulk. Be sure to go the component page and see the "Universal Pin", which gets around the sometimes annoying fixed pin poking you when it's in your pocket. This gives you the option of pocket or belt at any time.

I have used this and it is very smooth. But you do need the Outlook Web Access feature enabled. OWA's web address has to be entered into WM5 Active Sync along with your user name and password. If you use AUTD you also have to enter your phone's EMail which is your number @vtext.com. Those messages don't count as SMS by the way (they fall under your data plan), so don't go off and buy a messaging plan just ...

The $15 is because laptops will inevitably use more KB than a PDA. They are essentially upgrading you to the $59.99 unlimited data plan for a PC card EV/DO modem. You might not like the price, but it is at least consistent. The only reason to use 1xRTT is if you are in a marginal reception area for EV/DO. Then turning off EV/DO can save a lot of battery life. I don't know if the Q has the ability to ...

Pdanet works fine. It's worth the $30 even if VZW offers it later for free so you don't wait. But you might want to consider whether to pay the $15 per month to VZW. If they detect data usage more consistent with a laptop than a PDA, they can shut you down. It's happened, but I don't know how frequently. If your laptop usage will be relatively light, they probably never know.

Sprint's "free trial" is a fraud
May 25, 2006, 11:10 PM
in the Nextel forum

I just finished a conversation with (count 'em) five people at Sprint that insisted that the 14-day free trial period for Nextel only applies to the phone itself. It was like Alice Through the Looking Glass! Even though I returned the phone in 11 days, they said that because I had used minutes, I owed them for the plan. That revelation only came after I got a dunning notice for the bill I of course never thought I needed ...

A third party package called IM+ supports all the major networks. You have to buy it. I am assuming it will work on the Q as it does not depend on stylus operation, but you can check out their web site. http://www.shapeservices.com/eng/im/index .php

Re: motorola q vs treo 700 P
May 23, 2006, 3:39 PM
in the Motorola Q forum

Don't get the 700w. I have no idea if the 700p is better on battery life, but the w is positively awful. They don't advertise it, but the EMail life of the device (no talk at all) is 4-6 hours. Not even a full day!! The OS is completely different, so it is apples and oranges with the Q.

Re: Problems with the TREO 700W - Severe
May 23, 2006, 3:36 PM
in the Palm Treo 700w / 700wx forum

I second the warning to NOT GET THIS PHONE. The battery life is awful (well less than a day if you use EMail in any serious way - the manual says expect 4-6 hours!!) The OS hangs several times a day in lots of different ways including the impenetrable coma after sleeping. A fair amount of WM5 software is incompatible at least for now due to screen shape. VZW should pull this from the market. When I get a ...

May 23, 2006, 3:26 PM
in the Palm Treo 700w / 700wx forum

You are nuts to buy a 700w. The spec on the device is a 4-6 hour battery life doing EMail. Verizon says to think of it like talking on the phone. Well that makes this device the only one I have ever encountered that makes an absure claim like that. Run screaming, don't walk.

Rather than compare one device I have (the 700w) and one I don't (the Q), let me just say that the Treo is horribly unstable. It freezes a minimum of twice a day on me. The voice command software just stopped working and a hard reset hasn't cured it (I think it was the Palm "upgrade"). The keyboard sucks. It's bulky. The battery life is mediocre at best. Run screaming from the Treo. Whether the Q meets your needs will ...

Anything is possible, but I have never seen a mock-up, photo, or anything written about a black version. I wouldn't hold my breath on that. I am guessing that if Moto even does it, it will be months away as they are likely not to meet demand for the "basic" silver for some time.

Re: Q vs. new Treo 700P
May 18, 2006, 10:51 AM
in the Motorola Q forum

I say it's apples and oranges. If you prefer the Palm OS, the rest doesn't matter. If you want the Treo 700w, there are some problems with it: 1. It's pretty unstable. Almost everybody reports at least daily crashes or hangs. 2. It doesn't offer voice dialing from your headset. The Q reportedly does. 3. I have found myriad incompatibilities with WM5 software and the Treo due to certain screen issues. A lot is getting fixed, but not all. I think the ...

Re: Anybody know if the voice dialing works through bluetooth?
May 13, 2006, 9:06 AM
in the Motorola Q forum

That launches me over the fence on the positive side. Bluetooth-based voice dialing doesn't work on the 700w and given the QWERTY keyboards and their bitty keys, dialing is a major pain. Just being able to say "Dial 5556667777" while looking (or not) at the device face-on is a huge mitigation of the usability problems for PDA's (FYI, in my view the Blackberry's biggest failing so far.) It works on my V710 (two commands) and even more smoothly on ...

Re: Q UP ON MICROSOFT!!!!!!
May 10, 2006, 6:41 PM
in the Motorola Q forum

It's not the best out there, but it's darn good as a phone. The real question is how much consistent use of the EV-DO data channel will diminish the available talk time. That's always the big gotcha with these kinds of devices. If you have push EMail working and tend to get a lot of messages, this device will be doing extremely well if you get two full days of multi-purpose use with some reserve just in case. If ...

Your review of the Q
May 9, 2006, 7:37 AM
in the Motorola Q forum

Can you clarify a couple of items: 1. What is bad battery life? My Treo 700 is no prize in that regard. Does it last a full 24 hours with fairly heavy use? 2. With half the memory, that could/should cause lots of lockup situations. I have that with my Treo already. What is the consequence in your experience of overtaxing the available memory? 3. Have you tried any third party software? I have to say that the touch screen enables some ...

Might want to ask you friend if the device provides for speaker-independent voice dialing over the Bluetooth headset. If it does, a lot of the problems are surrmountable. The Treo 700w doesn't have it and it is a pain (the voice dialing does work without the headset, but is that how you want to use the phone?) I don't know about the other WM5 devices available like the XV6700. I am 100% certain that RIM is working on adding this ...

I can't say for sure, but I don't think Blackberry requires a special setup in the device itself. If Cingular thinks you have a Blackberry, it will treat it the same as others. What you do have to configure is the entire data access. What is hard to know is if the Samsung interface will give you access to the necessary settings. Check out this page to give you a sense of what has to be done: http://www.cellphonemall.net/wireles s/store/custom.aspx?id=4 I couldn't find ...

In real life, you won't be able to roam to Cingular except where T-mobile has no actual network. T-mobile is fine overseas, so no worry there. If you want reasonable domestic service, buy the phone from T-mobile, cancel your contract, pay the termination fee, and put in a Cingular SIM. Be prepared to configure all the information to make it active on the Cingular EDGE data network. It may be a small price to pay, though. This will be ...

Your fix seemed to solve that GWES problem. However, I think there is another problem with notifications. It seems like when there is a pending notification of voicemail, EMail, or missed calls, the device can hang or crawl to a halt. I have turned off all notifications of those kinds and hope that will solve the problem. Are you aware of this type of issue? I have found myself resetting the device several times a day. FYI I am ...

My take: the Moto HS850. I like to be able to turn it off just by closing the little boom (instead of pushing and holding a button and never being completely sure if it is off.) That way when it is in my pocket, I know my phone will ring and I can just open it to answer. To use the headset once you answer a call, you just open the boom and put it on your ear and ...

Re: Problems with "push" with Wireless Sync
Jan 15, 2006, 11:21 AM
in the Palm Treo 700w / 700wx forum

You can rent Exchange Server for $30 per month from Intermedia (.net). That gives you three mailboxes (the minimum) and support for the Treo via Outlook Web Access for free. I have been using them for a while and it is very painless and easy if you are willing to pay. Then everything is in sync. You can access your POP3 account through Outlook and it ends up in your Exchange mailbox, thereby automatically backed up.

Actually, if you are using the up-to-date Exchange Server, you do get tasks over the air. Not notes, though. And the wake up is not SMS, it is EMail over the data channel, so you don't pay for SMS messages. The effect is like push, and apparently some improvements pending for Exchange Server will eliminate the "out-of-band notification" via EMail. FYI, you never actually see the notifications. I use Good on another device. It's OK, but not that great. Because ...
