No mobile-to-mobile, no Get It Now, and I'm pretty sure no text messaging either. It's definitely better than the other prepaid plans VZW has offered in the past.
The trick is going to be making it profitable. Prepaid churn (among all carriers) is supposedly pretty high, so I expect if you make the handsets expensive enough, people will not want to throw that kind of money into a drawer when they get bored with it...

Question about EVDO, Rich
Does anybody know if, when VZW releases the EVDO handsets in January, they will also spread EVDO service to more cities? I keep hearing 1 of 2 things:
1. When the new EVDO handsets come out, they will turn EVDO on network-wide, not just in the 33 trial markets. Heard this from a couple of network engineers, who will remain nameless for obvious reasons.
2. They will keep rolling it out in a few cities here & there, for what reason ...

I know for a fact that VZW offers the same 15-day trial period for data services that it offers for handsets, I would assume the same with Cingular, T-M and the rest. Basically, the data device is treated just like a handset for rate ...

You are likely correct on the first count, as to what they meant, and definitely correct on the second. The Nationwide SingleRate plan has NO roaming whatsoever, but it's pretty pricey, from $35 for 150 anytime minutes to $300 for 3000 ...

Not true. You're probably thinking of the recent headlines about T-Mobile not having 3G for two years. But that was talking about WCDMA, not EDGE.
T-Mobile has already deployed EDGE in dozens of markets. They were supposed to have 30 markets launched by now, but they ran into some delays. You should see them launching EDGE early next year.

VZW doesn't give that sort of a discount, but I have personally experienced 60-80 Kbps throughput on 1XRTT, and over 300Kbps with EVDO. Plenty fast for what I use it for. I have a corporate discount, but that's something else altogether. You can get similar speeds using a tethered 1X phone, like a Motorola V60S (my backup) and Motorola Phone Tools. When the EVDO phones finally come out, you should be able to get EVDO speeds, or close to ...

Yes, there ARE EDGE data cards, I believe T-Mobile has one, and I'm pretty sure AT&Tingular is rolling one out.
The VZW cards CAN be used with PowerBooks & the like, but be aware that the drivers & software are from 3rd parties, and VZW will NOT provide tech support in that case. I think there's a thread on Howard Forums ...

You definitely need the latest software with the 5220, this is true.
One gripe I have about that card is the fact that if you let the connection go inactive for a few minutes, the card will report back as 'dormant' but still connected, then when you try to move to another website, it takes 3-4 seconds to 'reconnect'. I never had that issue with my 3320. Annoying as hell, but I've had good results in Broadband Access areas, ...

I will grant you that the 8900 was better than most Curitels, but they're still too flimsy. The day I cracked open a case of brand-new 8600s, and the display didn't work on 4 of the 10, that sealed the deal for me. I realize everybody has manufacturing issues every now & then, but that's a bit much.
Ugh. WHY?!?
I HATED the Curitel-built Audiovox phones. Nothing but junk. The 8600 especially. Let Sprint have them.

Will never happen. This has Anti-trust policy written all over it. It'll make VZW the single largest carrier in the USofA with fears of creating a monopoly. The FCC will have to be sick to let this happen.
The FCC DID let Clear Channel buy up huge numbers of stations in markets across the country - tantamount to the same thing.
