Re: A New Entrant In Wifi-First Wireless Service

My main question is why would anyone consider this ultra expensive service in a market flooded with much cheaper alternatives? $30/month? $10/month? People can pay a cheaper yearly fee of for magicjack or nettalk then use an app on all their smart devices that has an app to make and receive calls for a much lower price. Google hangouts, skype, etc are all cheaper options that may be able to be used on all their ...

I was thinking the same thing, unless those particular areas offer a faster tier of service or prioritize voip over other traffic I can't see a good reason to pay for such service. Even then, if the free wifi service sucks that much then I'd simply go to where it wasn't and patronage that other location's business.

Agreed and they need to take the same path with RT concerning tablets (remove Office and make it a separate app purchase, this would allow the OS to be cheaper but gives the customer the option to purchase it if they want it thus reaping a higher profit) so people can buy one for less than $200 in that market segment as well. If MS really wants to compete against both Android and Apple the two areas needed ...

A person would be better off using an used android or iphone on Tmobile's pay as you go by the minute and ponying up $100 to become gold status which lasts for a year or used up whichever happens first. Using google voice for your mobile number/caller id and talkatone for voip will allow the user to have unlimited calling and sms on wifi and 1000 we min that'll last a year or can be used at $1 ...

Gotta agree with acdc1a, people are paying $70+ more per month for just 1-2gb of data with ATT or Verizon which at highspeeds can be burned through in about 30 minutes without too much effort. I don't get what is so great about having a smartphone, paying monthly through the tail for it, and being "encouraged" not to use it on the carrier's network but on wifi? To me if I'm going to be so restricted then ...

If they are retired or a light mobile user they should consider prepaid unless they travel a lot. Unless they need a subsidized smartphone they should highly consider prepaid.

unwanted device according to the masses using last year's hardware, I bet they're going to foolishly try to offer it for $199 with a two year contract when it comes to the states. I wonder what it's going for in the countries offered and how it compares to S3 or iPhone 5 prices, or will they foolishly try to price it at the S4, HTC One, iPhone 5S, etc?

Service is where you use it, all carriers have areas where they out perform their competitors, some in more areas than others. For most people if they have service without negative issues (dropped calls or slow data connections) they don't care about the name of the carrier just if it simply works. Main thing more expensive carriers have are larger footprints and more roaming agreements, but who cares about either if you never go to those odd ...

in the Article: RIM Chose QNX Over Android forum

The only reason why Rim is hanging onto it's own OS platform is hopes for a sheer greed kind of environment of having their own walled garden app store like Apple, Android, and MS intends to do. It has absolutely nothing to do with differentiating themselves from other hardware makers, they have already done this with their subpar hardware versus the competition, they're the only "smartphone" that doesn't have a dual core yet while their competition moves on ...
