Re: Southern Linc + Nextel?
Good idea. Maybe that would make Southern Linc a national carrier. I'm really angry at Sprint making this unholy move trying to merge iDEN services onto its CDMA network. I hope Southern Linc would consider purchasing Sprint's iDEN network soon...
Sprint should've thought better...
Honestly you can't mix apples with oranges and Sprint made a HUGE mistake believing that they can actually mix iDEN with CDMA. I don't know why Sprint wanted to buy Nextel in the first place, but a mistake like this proves to be extremely startling, embarrassing, and fatal. Sprint needs to make better moves rather than to force iDEN to be migrated to CDMA, and needs to make better decisions in the future. This was a ...
Two-Mode iDEN/CDMA--an unholy marriage
I'm really getting nervous about this as a Two-Mode iDEN/CDMA may look to be very unholy. I won't know what the results are gonna be, but again, I don't know what to say from this point on because I like the iDEN network much better than the CDMA for both phone calls and walkie talkie calls. You have to choose one or the other, but BOTH is such an unholy option that I have to consider ...
Re: Samsung Phones--Sprint Priority?
That's kind of sick--Samsung should release phones that would work with both Sprint and Verizon, but IMO Samsung should think about making "unlocked" CDMA Phones so people can choose who to go with.
What a world we live in...
Re: Samsung Phones--Sprint Priority?
I was actually talking about the fact that Sprint always has the newest Samsung phones first and Verizon getting Samsung phones last.
Samsung Phones--Sprint Priority?
It seems every time a Samsung phone gets approved by the FCC, it always seems that Sprint gets the highest priority when it comes to these phones (Sprint has the most Samsung phones of all carriers). Shouldn't this phone be approved for use with Verizon Networks as well? Sprint having highest priority for Samsung Phones is just totally no fair. :o
Re: i930 discontinued for i940???
I don't think that the i930 has been discontinued, as I have seen a Class II Permissive Change on the i930's FCC ID which means that the i930 won't be discontinued anytime sooner because a non-camera cousin--the i920--will be coming soon.
I think that the i940 would have to be a separate FCC Number so don't count on the i930 being out yet.
Breaking News
R5B.00.04 Revision adds Falcon Mini-Keyboard Support/Functionality not available from R5B.00.01.
Re: bluetooth = terrible
I should point out that there's a firmware update available at this website address:
http://idenphones.motorola.com/id en/support/software/html/firmware_utility.htm l
Click on the R5B.00.04 (Latest version of i870's Firmware) link. Hope this helps.
i870 Firmware Update now visible at Motorola iDEN Website
NOTE: This message also applies if you are, or know someone who's an i860 user.
You definitely should check the phone's software version regularly by hitting Pound, Star, Menu, and Right at the Ready Screen. Check your i870's software version. If it's earlier than R5B.00.04, I strongly urge you to go to http://idenphones.motorola.com/iden/support/s oftware/html/firmware_utility.html to download the R5B.00.04 Firmware Update.
Again, the version as of today is R5B.00.04 for i870, whether Nextel or Southern Linc. i860 users are encouraged ...
Re: Easing everyone's fears...
I think the brands will be Sprint Classic (Consumer CDMA PCS) and Sprint Professional (Business-friendly iDEN).
Verizon should've teamed up with Garmin instead
Verizon should've made an allegiance with Garmin rather than use another vendor for their BREW-based GPS Service. In addition, Verizon needs to start using Java if they are to survive in the mobile phone app playfield--I prefer Java over BREW.
I don't know why Verizon would use BREW technology instead. Is Java or BREW more stable BTW? I understand that this is going to be BREW-based (Get It Now is based on the BREW codebase), but Verizon ...
Re: Why Motorola has the highest GPS Priority?
Thought so. I thought that there are other phone and equipment companies that are as good on GPS as Motorola is. I guess Motorola is always the first phone maker to put their hat in the ring. That is why all of Sprint's "Falcon iDEN" phones are GPS-ready.
I just wished that Verizon could've demanded all of their phones and/or equipment to be GPS ready. I'm not sure about the case of Palm, since I have ...
Re: Pricing
Oh, Two-Year Prices require a minimum $10 monthly data subscription as well. Big Ole Blarg on that.
To add to your worries, you're only allowed the 2-Year Price once every 24 months!!! Big Headache!!!
Re: Pricing
It's on stock again, though it's limited in stock for the timebeing. I really can't recommend this phone unless you're going to go to Japan, Korea, all around the world, mainly I'd recommend this to world-travelling executives. Many people want this phone because it has Windows Mobile.
Here's the pricing map:
*$500 Suggested Retail Price
*$425 with a 1-Year Agreement
*$350 with a 2-Year Agreement and with a minimum $10 Data Service Plan Monthly Subscription.
Be aware, though, I have heard reports ...
Correction
Oh, sorry. My bad. I meant "GPS" not "GSM". Naughty me.
Why Motorola has the highest GPS Priority?
I wonder why Motorola always has the highest priority amongst GSM phones to have turn by turn direction service. Is it me, or is it that Motorola are purveyors of GSM Turn-By-Turn service?
It's about time Verizon has a Turn-By-Turn service, but I was just hoping that Verizon could've had plenty phones that had this service initially. Furthermore, Verizon phones need to have Java for Turn-By-Turn to work well.
Re: direct talk and the i930
The i930 does NOT have DirecTalk. Only "Classic" Direct Connect. This phone was supposed to be released one year ago, but apparently problems caused the project to be grievously delayed.
Re: WHEN IN THE HELL...
Actually the release date is going to be October 31, so that means that the i870 is released ahead of schedule. The phone will be on demo display November 10, but starting October 31, you can actually buy the i870 at your Nextel Retail Stores, though you have to wait if you want to purchase it at a Nextel Authorized Dealer.
Setting things straight
The i870 will be released for use with the Sprint Nextel iDEN Network on: October 31, 2005 (Halloween)
The Phone will cost $450 Retail before incentives.
1-Year Contract costs $375
2-Year Contract costs $300 and requires a minimum $10 monthly Data Subscription.
The phone itself will have no OS dependencies other than requiring use of Microsoft Windows to update software.
Can't with Verizon
Verizon runs under Qualcomm CDMA. Nextel runs under Motorola iDEN. The i870 runs under iDEN. Therefore, you can't get it with Verizon--You have to get it with Nextel Service.
Re: Status Light
I don't think the i870 has a Status Light--Status Light IMO wastes battery.
Re: Price
You know the release date? I was thinking that the i870 was going to be at least the same price as with the i930.
I was wondering what does "HOFO" mean? I'm curious about it. Thanks. Not too many Nextel Kiosk workers know about the i870, though.
Re: Nextel Bluetooth
Another reason why Bluetooth could not have been added to the final version of this product was because Bluetooth is regulated by FCC Standards and should for any reason Bluetooth had to be added to the i930, a Class II Permissive Change would be necessary, thus delaying the release for an iDEN Smartphone.
Any Bluetooth Addition planned had to be approved by the FCC and even worse, subject to a requirement of a Class II Permissive Change.
Re: Motorola I930 release date? I GOT A DATE!
I would say at least October or November for the phone to be optimized fully. Hopefully, all the bugs at the brink of i930's release will be worked through by then.
This is good BUT...
...I wished that the i640/i645 ran under Palm OS for Smartphones software (Namely Garnet for Smartphones and/or Cobalt for Smartphones) instead of Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphones.
