Unlocked Apple iPhone
Nov 30, 2012, 7:42 AM
in the Verizon forum

I read that Apple is now selling an unlocked iPhone 5. Previously, I read that all iPhone 5s working on the Verizon network are unlocked. What, if anything, is the difference between the new unlocked iPhones and the regular iPhones working on the Verizon network purchased with a Verizon contract, other than the contract and price?

I take it then that since I would stay on America's Choice that the plan remains a 450 minute, no texting plan, correct?

Re: Verizon's new pricing plans

This shows how difficult it is to get all the facts out succinctly. I am actually on the older America's Choice plan and have a single line. Can I also change to the $30 plan for 2GB in place of my existing unlimited plan? If I do, do I retain the 450 minutes of talk time with no texting plan, or does it go to the unlimited talk and texting plan? If I cannot make this change because it's ...

Re: Verizon's new pricing plans

Since I never had a text plan, the disparity appears to be even worse. I now pay $70 per month for unlimited data and 450 minutes of talk time. If an individual plan now costs $100 for 2GB of data, the disparity is $30 per month, which is considerable. Does this new plan include unlimited talk time and unlimited data, neither of which i need? Thanks.

Verizon's new pricing plans

I have an unlimited data plan on my BlackBerry. When I upgrade, if I don't want one of Verizon's "share everything" plans, is there any individual plan still available that is priced based upon the amount of data used?I don't see such a plan on Verizon's website. I understand that in theory I can keep my unlimited data plan if I forgo a discounted new phone, but this makes no sense for me. I also note from Verizon's website ...

Verizon might unlock the GSM side of the phone, but the SIM the phone uses is a micro-SIM. Do overseas carriers sell micro-SIMs, or will they be difficult to find?

Forget my question. It just occurred to me that the iPhone 4 is a CDMA phone only. I'll ask that question again when Verizon finally releases an iPhone that has both GSM and CDMA bands.

Re: BB Protect & New Data Plans
Jun 29, 2011, 3:20 PM
in the Verizon forum

I use my BB exactly as you do and also have the 150 MB plan. Still, I'm considering going to the unlimited plan now just in case I decide to purchase a different smart phone some time next year when my "new every two" allows for it at a reduced price. It's a difficult decision inasmuch as there seems to be a difference of opinion as to whether today's unlimited data plan will be grandfathered in if one ...

Your post is contrary to what had been said in this forum prior thereto, so I called Verizon to ask. The first person at Verizon confirmed what you posted. The second person said that one is grandfathered even if he upgrades phones after the July 7 date. The latter person read to me from what he said was the training manual and it clearly said that one is grandfathered even if one upgrades devices and is not grandfathered only ...

I have the BlackBerry 9650 and love it. I use it primarily as a communication device and to look up facts and view articles on the internet when I'm not near a computer. It is simple to use, very flexible as to notifications, well built and accomplishes all I need.

Does BlackBerry Desktop Software work well with a Mac?

I'm thinking of replacing my PC with a Mac. Does BlackBerry desktop software work as well with a Mac as it does with a PC? Are the versions the same, or is the version for a MAC less advanced?

Re: BlackBerry Protect

I talked again with BlackBerry and Verizon. This time they told me that the problem is that I'm on the America's Choice calling plan and that if I switch to the Nationwide plan that BlackBerry Protect will work. I haven't tried it yet. They both agreed that whether I'm on the 150 MB plan or the unlimited data plan is irrelevent for this purpose.

Re: BlackBerry Protect

Everything else works. Someone from BlackBerry got back to me and left a message that said that the problem is that Verizon's "provisioning won't allow it to work." I have to get back to BlackBerry, which promised to get Verizon on the line to change its "provisioning." Frankly, I don't know what this means.

Re: BlackBerry Protect

I'm not sure you're right. The Verizon people I talked to even put me on the unlimited plan for a while and I had the same problem as I did when on the 150 MB plan. Both Verizon and BlackBerry told me that it should work on either plan. Additionally, the App allows you to not upload except when you're on Wi-Fi, so whether you're on the unlimited data plan or not should make no difference. In any event ...

I contacted Verizon myself and was told that Verizon has no such restriction on the program. Verizon couldn't figure out why this message appeared on the program and transferred me to BlackBerry. I've been through two people at BlackBerry so far and they can't figure it out either. If they eventually do, I'll post what they say.

It's not an error message. Verizon has confirmed to others that BlackBerry Protect will not work with the 150 MB data plan.

A dialog box appears when you try to do the first upload saying that "Ycalling plan does not support BlackBerry Protect. Contact your carrier", or something to that effect.

BlackBerry Protect
Mar 6, 2011, 7:38 AM
in the Verizon forum

Why is Verizon not allowing BlackBerry Protect to work on the BlackBerry 150 MB data plan? This program allows you to set it to upload only when it's on Wi-Fi, so what is the point? Is it to convince people to go to the unlimited data plan when there is otherwise no reason to do so?

Re: $15 "promotional" data plan...

I have a BB Bold, which I set to wifi both at home and at the office. As a result, I use very little data over the phone connection. Even when I didn't set it on wifi, I still rarely consumed more than 30 MB during any month. The 150 MB plan is more than adequate for my usage. In fact, I wonder how many BB owners ever surpass 150 MB in a month.

New OS6

in the BlackBerry Bold 9650 forum

I downloaded the new OS6 last night and am in the process of getting used to it. One of its most highly touted benefits is that the new Webkit browser is supposed to be much faster and better than the OS5 browser. So far, I find that the new browser is no faster and might even be slower. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

The only drawback is that you cannot use the BlackBerry charging pod with this case. I didn't realize this until I ordered the charging pod and it was delivered to me. I then had to decide between the charging pod and the Otterbox Commuter case I have (it's too much trouble removing the case each time I want to charge the phone). The charging pod went back and I'm still happy with the Otterbox.

Re: Verizon Data Plan Changes
Oct 29, 2010, 6:20 AM

I rarely use wifi on my Blackberry, yet don't even come close to consuming 150MB a month. I use my BB for email (of which I receive plenty) and occasionally the web browser for looking up information or reading an article. I do not watch videos. Making the switch to the $15 plan was not a difficult decision for me. If I had an extremely active month consuming data, I would still not reach 150MB, but even if I ...

Verizon's new $15 per month data plan is now available
Oct 28, 2010, 10:10 AM
in the Verizon forum

I changed my Blackberry data plan this morning to the new $15 per month plan, which should be plenty adequate based on my past usage. If, per chance, I exceed 150MB in any month, the worst likely to happen is that I'll be back to the $30 for that month that I've been paying until now. The 150MB is prorated for the month in which the change is made.

Re: Update
Oct 20, 2010, 6:00 PM
in the Verizon forum

I agree. Hopefully, I'll stay under the initial 150MB charge. Still it's a little upsetting that Verizon charges $15 more than AT@T for 200MB, especially combined with the fact that Verizon also charges an extra $15 for a BES connection that AT@T doesn't charge.

Re: will verizon lower there data plans?
Oct 20, 2010, 11:40 AM

The way I use data, it would be rare for me to go above the 150MB limit. It's nice to know, though, that if I do, I won't be gouged too badly. Thanks.

"Not that it makes much difference, but the overage on an extra 50MB of data is only $5, and still cheaper than unlimited. And it was probably designed that way." Is it that how it will work, or will it be up to another 150MB for an added $15? I recall having read the latter. The former is less onerous.

Unfortunately, we on Verizon will only receive 150MB for $15, unlike AT@T, where their subscribers receive 200MB for $15.

I recall having read that BlackBerry announced that OS 6 will be available for the Bold 9650. I assume that Verizon will not stand in the way of that. As a side note, though, I am very happy with OS 5 and wonder whether OS 6 might be a little too "busy" for my taste. We will see.

Question about prepaid SIM card
Aug 25, 2010, 11:05 AM

Does anyone know why T-Mobile will not sell a prepaid SIM card to a foreigner visiting the United States that will include data? I know that cellphone providers in other countries do this and I've been told by one AT&T rep (although contradicted by another) that AT&T will. Thanks.

This is what I'm leaning toward. I have one question, though, concerning your response. Why is it necessary to turn everything off except wifi? If I did that, I wouldn't obtain phone calls. Also, if the prepaid international SIM doesn't accept data, why would it be necessary to turn everything off? Thanks.
