Re: Month 25 of 2 year contract
It goes month to month. It does not "renew automatically" for another two years.
The advantage you have is that you can bail on US Cellular without a penalty, any time you please. This assumes you like your present phone and don't have "phone envy" for something that has come out since you got yours.
Good luck. Enjoy the freedom.

Re: This doesnt make sense!
I agree, it seems irrational, but cellphones are very expensive. Even an entry-level phone costs $180.00.
The prices are heavily subsidized by the carriers, and "free phones" are not really free. They make it back over the length of the contract. You can't expect them to make up the costs of TWO subsididies in the same 2-year contract period.
Also, it seems as though you were looking to upgrade your phone as well, since I don't ...
Re: How is USCC reception in non-USCC areas?
I live in New Hampshire, but travel often to Massachusetts. US Cellular phones roam on Verizon (or Sprint, if Verizon signal isn't available) and it's fine.
As to a phone, I recommend the Kyocera KX-1 (also known as the Soho). I've had mine for almost a year, and it's performed flawlessly. Speakerphone, 200 contact phone book, great sound quality incoming and those I call do not realize I am on a cellphone.
It tends to get short shrift ...
Re: Just want a basic phone this one all over the map
Good.
Perhaps they changed plants or something when they went to the KX-1v version.... maybe Verizon is the only ones getting the lemons. So far all the complaints about shoddy construction are coming from Verizon users.

Re: Just want a basic phone this one all over the map
It's unfortunate, but it is beginning to appear that the phones made in Mexico (including the KX-1v) are inferior in quality to the earlier versions made in the USA.
I've had my KX-1 for 10 months thru US Cellular and it's performed extremely well, no problems whatsoever.
Looks like Kyocera made a mistake, shifting production to Mexico.

Re: good bye USCC!
Hmm, reminds me of somebody who buys a toaster because it has a cool design.
"Sure it ruins the toast every time, but man, does it ever get oohs and ahs from my friends."
Based on what I have heard from several friends who left USCC or Verizon to go to Cingular, you are going to wind up with a neat phone and inferior wireless service.
But, we all have our priorities, I guess. Good luck.

Re: Any former Verizon users at US Cellular?
In Maine (and the other Northern New England states) Verizon and its predecessors decided to largely ignore those markets and instead concentrated on Boston, Providence, and the surrounding areas. So that gave US Cellular a chance to get control of those licenses (mostly on the A side).
Now Verizon is attempting to fill in their footprint by buying up PCS licenses in the areas where they have no ocverage of their own (parts of Vermont, Maine, NH). ...
Re: question about end of contract
At the end of your contract, you will go "month to month" if you do norhing, which means you can leave anytime you wish with no penalty.
If you want a subsidized new phone, you will have to sign a NEW 2-year contract.

Re: Just want a basic phone this one all over the map
My Kyocera has 194 separate listings in the phone book, and 20 of them have more than one phone number, so there's proof that the phone book can hold up to 200 distinct entries, each with several phone numbers.
All I can say is, if your assessment is accurate, then Kyocera made a big mistake by shifting production to Mexico a few months ago. My phone from US Cellular (and all the other ones from USC that I've looked ...
Re: Oh Nooo..Please don't send this to Verizon!
If they are "junk" then it's a recent development. Up until just recently these phones were made in California. Maybe the shift to Mexican production hasn't been successful.
I've had my KX-1 for 9 months and it has performed exceptionally well, no problems at all.

Re: Just want a basic phone this one all over the map
Almost all of the reviews are positive. There are a few negatives, from people who evidently got a "lemon", which is possible with any phone. Just take it back and get another, guys, don't bad mouth the model itself!
I've had mine for 9 months plus, and it's performed exceptionally well, great reception, clear speakerphone, I sound great at the other end (they tell me), what more can one want?
The only negatives I have found is that the ...
Re: 444 battery?
I believe Kyocera's WERE made in the USA until just recently, when they shifted production to Mexico. So if your phone is a few months old, it probably is made in the USA. Check in the battery compartment to verify if made in USA or elsewhere.

Re: Speakerphone...full-duplex???....thanx....
Yes, full duplex.
Re: What does call from "Restricted" mean?
"Restricted" means the person has blocked their caller ID from showing. On landlines, you can usually opt for a service (nominal cost) that doesn't allow such calls through... a recorded message tells the caller to dil *82 followed by your number to unblock Caller ID for that one call. Unfortunately, such a service is not available for cellphones.
"Unavailable" is the equivalent of the old "Out of Area" message on caller ID's and these days it usually means ...
Re: Speakerphone
No, the flip must be open to use the speakerphone.

Re: what phones do you recommend? What do you know about the kyocera KX9?
The Kyocera Soho has excellent reception, I've had mine for 8 months and am well satisfied.
As for the KX9. looks like it'll be a while, IF USC does even get it. I don't see much to distinguish it from the Soho, other than the 500 entry phone book. The Soho is much more distinctive looking. The KX9 looks like a million other silver colored flip phones.

Re: Keyboard Lighting Color?
#1 - I am guessing that the blue color of the keypad lights is something that may vary from provider to provider. Mine (from US Cellular) is red. Perhaps all of Verizon's are blue.
The hang-up/Power button lights up on mine.
Just guessing, but I am thinking that somebody has monkeyed with the phone you bought and screwed it up, and that's why it was for sale.
By the way, the keypad on mine is NOT blurry in a ...

Re: How are signal strength and reception?
Very surprising. I am in New Hampshire, which has a lot of rural areas, and reception here in those areas has been decent. Also, most user reviews have mentioned good reception.

Re: How are signal strength and reception?
This is a hard question to answer, for ANY phone, because it depends on the construction of the building, what floor you are on, etc.
I have had my KX-1 for 6 months and generally speaking it's reception is excellent. In homes, no problem whatsoever. In stores, it depends how "deep" within the store you are. If you are far, far away from the street, and near machinery, reception sucks. But then that is true with ...
Re: SoHo Battery LIfe
OK, I think that explains it. "Standby time", even with only 1 bar, doesn't take much power. But using the phone a lot, with just one bar, will deplete the battery quicker than the manufacturer's claims.
This according to a friend who is a "battery expert". I use my phone almost exclusively in situations where there are 3 or 4 bars, and I get about what Kyocera says I should get in terms of usage.
If you don't ...
Re: SoHo Battery LIfe
Just out of curiosity, how many bars of coverage do you normally have when you make calls? In my home I usually have all 4 bars, which may be a reason why my batteries last 4 days.
I do notice that heavy call usage drains the battery fast, probably faster than what Kyocera claims.
You could pick up an extended battery from Kyocera, that will give you about 50% more time. That's assuming you are otherwise satisfied with ...
Re: SoHo Battery LIfe
That sounds abnormally short. I don't have many really long conversations, but I have to recharge only once every 4 or 5 days, usually.

Re: What is up with April?
Justpeachy,
I hope you are right. What works in Chicago won't necessarily work in Maine, or North Carolina, or Iowa.
Maybe they need to poll their customers. A bill insert could do that, along with a postage paid envelope.

Re: What is up with April?
Mister_Zero's answers make sense, although we may not like the situations he describes. A Regional Carrier does have some limitations on what it can do vs. the National carriers.
All the more reason why USCC should (a) continue to offer Regional Plans for the foreseeable future and (b) offer plans at lower price points (a National Plan for $40, and a local plan UNDER $40). USCC can't afford to write off the moderate users.
Sure they can shoot for ...
Re: What is up with April?
DDA,
You're right. I should have kept my old NH Home State Plan (2001) which gave me all of NH (incl Rockingham and Strafford Cos) as well as all of Eastern Mass. as part of "Local." But I stupidly gave it up to get a discount on a CDMA phone in Oct. 2003.

Re: What is up with April?
froggirl,
Thanks for your comments, but I hit ROAMING in the northern fringe of Londonderry, and that is less than 5 miles from the store on South Willow St., Manchester.
The Rockingham/Stafford county situation is a problem for anyone who works in Londonderry or Derry or Salem and lives in Manchester or Nashua (or vice versa). The FCC considers Rockingham part of the Boston market, but it has much more affinity with Manchester and Nashua than with Boston. Until ...
Re: Verizon Buying US Celluar?
I think the family that owns US Cellular (and TDS, their corporate parent) is more interested in operating a Wireless company and having a great reputation, than they are in money, per se. They already have plenty of money.
Money means a lot, but it is not everything. You think people run for President of the USA for the MONEY?
Not saying USC won't eventually merge with somebody else, but it is not going to be soon, in my ...
Re: What is up with April?
trucksmoveamerica,
Nope, I live in New Hampshire. They offer "local" plans here too.
But US Cellular has a company retail store in Manchester, and 4 or 5 miles down the road, it is not local any more, it's roaming (off a local plan). One needs to buy a Regional Plan to get coverage in that nearby area. And we are not talking the backwoods, Rockingham County (the roaming territory I speak of) has a population of ...
Re: What is up with April?
Maximus,
My hat is off to you. But I am old fashioned, I prefer to BE with my girlfriends rather than talking to them on the phone.
Seriously, folks, I know there are a lot of heavy users, but USCC needs to give some consideration to moderate users with finite budgets.

Re: What is up with April?
As I understand it, the 800 min for $39.95 applies ONLY to the Chicago market. Everywhere else, it is 800 National minutes for $49.95.
I understand that US Cellular wants to go after the "heavy users", but MOST of their customers across the country are NOT heavy users, they are moderate users. US Cellular seems to be writing these people (the $35 to $40 a month crowd) off.
Where I live, a "local" plan isn't feasible because ...
Re: What is up with April?
Maximus,
WOW! Unless you are using the phone in business, you get the Chatty Kathy award for April!

Re: What is up with April?
Free incoming is not a big deal in most peoples' eyes, as they make far more calls on their cellphone than they receive.
US Cellular should go back to offering Unlimited N&W, like they did a couple of years ago. Verizon is doing very well with their Unlimited N&W and a $40 price point on their national plan (450 anytime minutes). Not everybody needs 800 weekday minutes.
I think US Cellular missed the boat with this current ...
Re: Soho Available on Verizon, Alltel Web Sites!!
Verizon is charging more for this than other providers -- $39.95 with a 2-year contract. Alltel's price is 99¢ with a 2-year, and US Cellular is $19.95 with a 2-year.
But I guess that is the premium you pay to buy and use a phone on Verizon .

Soho Available on Verizon, Alltel Web Sites!!
Contrary to the posting by Wireless_Guru, Verizon and Alltel are both now featuring the Soho. It is shown on both their web sites.
If this phone is so bad (as the Guru and a few other bashers have claimed) why are these additional carriers picking it up?

Re: OhNO it's the SoHo!!!
